Major Step Towards The Holy Grail Of Clean Energy!

Scientists say it’s a major step toward the holy grail of clean energy: nuclear fusion. In a laboratory experiment reported in the journal Nature, scientists at California’s Lawrence Livermore lab produced more energy out of fusion than was contained in the fuel used to create the reaction.

Unlike nuclear fission, which is used in atomic weapons and nuclear power plants, fusion produces energy by forcing atomic particles together rather than splitting them apart.  Fusion is the power that fuels the Sun and stars. It does not create any explosion, leaves behind no radioactive waste, and produces no greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

Fusion’s fuel source is hydrogen, the most plentiful element in the universe. The Lawrence Livermore experiment deployed 192 powerful lasers that focused enormous amounts of energy in billionth-of-a-second long pulses.  Scientists did not reach the breakthrough point they call ignition – a sustained fusion reaction that produces more energy than was used in the entire process.  Researchers say they have a long way to go before they reach that goal.
