Eight tips for healthy weight loss

(Melissa Davis)

Weight loss begins with your mind. You have to choose to lose weight and then you will. Don’t let your mind overpower your body and convince you that you can’t do it. You can do it. Weight loss is not hard. Anyone anywhere can make small changes that will provide big results.

Start by thinking about what goes inside your body and not what’s outside.  It’s far more important to be healthy than it is to just lose the weight. Don’t get me wrong. Losing excess weight is good for you, but how you do it is just as important.

Here are some of the best tips for healthy weight loss

1. Make sure that everything you eat or drink has a purpose.

Try to think about what the food you are eating is going to do for your body. When you drink a glass of water think about how it’s going to hydrate your cells. Try to eliminate anything you are taking into your body that does not serve a nutritional purpose.

The best way to begin the process of eliminating unnecessary foods is to start logging the food you eat. You can use a notebook, journal or keep a spreadsheet on your computer. Write in everything you eat and drink. Make a specific line to write down how many cups of water you are drinking as well.

2. Eliminate sugar.

Stop eating candy and chips and quit drinking soda and sports drinks. Sugar equals bad fat. Bad fat can lead to heart disease. If you have a hard time avoiding sugar then change your mind-set about it. Sugar equals heart attack. If you have a sweet tooth and just need something sweet then replace the candy and cookies with fresh or dried fruit.

3. Replace soda with water or green tea.

Make sure that you are getting plenty of water every day. Every adult needs to consume eight 8oz glasses of water every 24 hours. If you drink any caffeine you need to add one glass of water for each glass of caffeinated beverage you consume. Caffeine can dehydrate your body so it’s necessary for you to replenish the water in your diet after drinking soda, tea or coffee.

4. Don’t use artificial sweeteners

I know that artificial sweeteners are low or no calories. Look at what is in the ingredients list on your sweeteners. Do you recognize any of the ingredients? If you don’t know what it is then why are you putting it into your body? Most likely most of the words on the list are chemicals. Natural sweeteners are easiest for your body to break down and process because they are natural.

5. Walk

If you want to lose weight, then you need to be burning off calories. Getting up and moving is all you have to do. Start by walking. Walk around the block. Walk to a nearby store and back. Park farther away from a store and walk across the parking lot. Use the stairs. Just walk. A good goal is 20-30 minutes a day.

When you have a break at work get up and take a 10 minute walk. Park farther away then plan for a good 5-10 minute walk into and out of work. You just completed your 20-30 minutes for a day!

6. Do cardio

If you are looking to get the weight off quickly then cardiovascular exercise is your best friend.  Cardio is anything that gets your heart rate elevated and keeps it elevated. You can try things like martial arts, dancing, running, bicycling, and swimming. There are so many options for cardiovascular exercise. There is something for everyone. Get up and try one, or more. You will never know if you like it or not if you don’t try it first.  Try to fit in three one-hour cardio session per week.

6. Eat half when eating out

If you are eating out, divide your meal in half before you even take a bite. When eating out you will get served two or more servings of food for one meal. Dividing in half or thirds will guarantee that you wont overeat for that meal. Put the other portion in a take out container and have it for another meal another time.

8. The Power Of Juicing

Juicing is wonderful. You can pack in tons of nutrients and vitamins into one glass. An excellent thing about juicing is that you get to create your own wonderful flavors. Juicing is quick and easy. You will be hooked on it the first time you try it out.
The most important thing to remember when juicing is that fresh is best. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables and juice them when you want to drink it. Don’t juice the night before. Fresh juice will spoil quickly because it is not processed for shelf life.

Have fun with whatever you choose to do. Find things you enjoy to do and do them. If you don’t like something don’t continue to do it. Choose activities that you can do with family or friends, or join a class. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy it.
Regardless of how much weight you are trying to lose, under five pounds or over fifty, overall health is most important. Don’t get crazy and lose too much weight too fast. Don’t skip meals and important calories. Be smart and be healthy.
