A Conversation with Rosemary Ellen Guiley about “Talking to the Dead”

Technology is advancing and our use of it is omnipresent in our daily lives.  Is it so far-fetched that one day soon we will have the ability to not only communicate with each other via our tech toys, but with the afterlife and perhaps other dimensions?

In the book, Talking to the Dead by George Noory, host of the popular Coast to Coast AM radio program and paranormal researcher Rosemary Ellen Guiley, readers will be afforded a deep dive into spirit communication and the technology that’s driving the other-side closer to our doorstep.

Subsequent to my recent review of the book, I spoke with Rosemary to discuss all of the variations, implications and processes involved in this emerging field of exciting research.

 Alexis Brooks – In a previous conversation we had, you mentioned that you believed that somehow the veils between this dimension and the afterlife might be thinning.  Are the current times and all the geophysical phenomena we are experiencing playing a role in this process?

Rosemary Ellen Guiley - Nobody really knows why these things happen.  It could have to do with geophysical factors; it could be the evolution of human consciousness or even the state of human consciousness.  We have a collective that we have to take into consideration.  I base that on the frequency and type of reports that I’m getting as well as comparing notes with other colleagues in the field.  The media attention on the paranormal and spiritual realms stimulates more people to talk about their own experiences.  We do have a factor of increased reporting – not necessarily an increase in actual cases.  But because there’s no baseline, we have no idea of knowing exactly where that starts and stops.  However, I do believe that things are on the increase.  We’ve had quite a bit of media attention focused in this area for some decades now and I do see trends in topics and the types of people’s experiences.  Also my own research has convinced me that there are more opportunities for interaction between the dimensions.  Here again we don’t know what’s coming from the other side – there could be efforts being made by the entities and the dead to penetrate the barrier and they have indicated so in various communications but they’ve also been very elusive in terms of exactly what they’re doing and what’s needed on our part.  The theme that seems to come through over and over again is that consciousness plays a key role in this process.

AB – So it would seem to me that the individual with a strong desire to make contact could do so based on his or her state of consciousness at the time.  But assuming that the devices that are mentioned in the book do play a key role in the overall process and the average person wanted to experiment with EVP in their home, where would you recommend they begin?

RG- The easiest thing that anybody can try is to get a recorder.  Most people have digital recorders these days, but magnetic tape recorders also work.  The simplest technique is to take some quiet time where you’re free of distraction and focus on opening up a communication line to the other world.  It’s also helpful to try and get communication from someone specific such as a dead loved one or you can ask to make contact with someone who has something meaningful to say to you that’s positive and beneficial.  Prepare some questions.  Ask them out loud.  Leave about ten to fifteen seconds of silence and then ask another question.  Sometimes it’s helpful to have a lot of yes/no questions because answers, if you get them from the spirit world, tend to be very short.  We don’t understand the links between the worlds and it’s not possible to carry on lengthy conversations like we have here in this reality, but surprisingly, people get very significant results, even from that kind of very simple technique.  Sometimes it takes a while to get answers.  People should not be discouraged if nothing happens for a while.  In fact, most of the leading researchers in this field experimented to the point of disillusionment and nearly giving up, before they got their first EVP.

AB – So we’re not talking about real time EVP as is highlighted in the book, we are talking about playback?

RG – Yes, I call it passive EVP because we don’t have the opportunity of hearing it real time so we can’t ask follow up questions.  We don’t hear the answers until we play back the recording.  Now why this mysterious process happens in this fashion, again, nobody really knows.  But it has been something that has been observed, ever since our modern recording and telecommunications equipment has been invented.  People have experimented with different formats.  Some people get better results if they have a sound or steady noise going on in the background like a fan humming, static from a radio tuned between stations or a television set on a non broadcast channel making kind of a staticky noise.  Gentle water noises like a table fountain are very effective.  For some reason this enhances a lot of results.  It’s like the spirits need some sort of sound in order to manipulate words.  And there’s been a lot of debate as to how this is getting impressed on a recorder.  Do they speak with some sort of spirit larynx and vocal chords?  Do they impress something directly on to the recording mechanism of the device itself?  Of course when we had magnetic tape recorders in prominence there were all kinds of debates as to how significant the tape was.  Well you get the same results on digital recorder.  So again the process is very mysterious. But we have mountains of evidence of mystery voices that cannot be explained naturally that we collected around the world for over a hundred years.

AB – I recall in the book you explained to George (Noory) that the spirit communicators have said that what they do is “manipulate energy on their side and sound on ours,” to achieve a communication bridge.

RG – Some of the explanations from some of them who have volunteered their process, yes.  But again the details are very foggy.  They don’t really go into specifics.  In fact some of them have told us that the actual process is rather beyond our comprehension.  We simply have to do our best bit on this side and they’ll do theirs and hopefully we’ll make better bridges.  Now the goal of course is to build a communication bridge that is reliable and lasting and can sustain real time, longer conversations; even the transmission of video images.  There have been pictures transmitted from the other side and again it’s subjective evidence but at the very least it’s very intriguing.  So that’s what we really need – a device that can be like a web cam, we can set up and “Skype” the other side (humorously).  I think that the day will come when we will have some communication devices like that.  Right now we’re still in rather primitive but also exciting stages of the work.

AB – You talk about a phenomenon called “phone calls from the dead.”  I myself have received personal accounts of a similar phenomenon.

RG- Phone calls from the dead have been well documented by two very respectable researchers, D. Scott Rogo, who’s passed on now and Raymond Bayless.  They simply started checking into a phenomenon that they heard about over and over again that peaked their curiosity.  How could the dead call you on a telephone?  Yet ever since the telephone was invented, we’ve had mystery calls.  It seems that the people on the other side are able to find ways to use all of our technology as it emerges.  But a phone call from the dead takes different forms.  It’s like getting a call from the living, only sometimes the call is very faint or distorted.  Back in the days when we were all on land lines, it sounded like something coming from overseas; it was a very bad connection.  The calls are often placed at the time of someone’s passing.  The person who is getting the call usually doesn’t know that the caller is dying or has died – they find that out later, but they get a very strange phone call from someone and it may just be a “hello, hello” with a very recognizable voice or “I’ve called to say good bye.”  Something very short and it’s puzzling and then they find out later that the person died at about the time the phone call was made.  Other phone calls from the dead come on anniversary dates, like someone’s birthday, a wedding anniversary, even the anniversary of someone’s passing.  And sometimes they just come out of the blue.  You pick up the phone and to your shock you hear a voice that you know very well from someone that is now on the other side.

AB – Do these “phone calls” tend to be clearer than the voices that come through other devices?  You mention that the voices that come through the phone are recognizable.  Are they clearer?

RG – Usually, there’s a lot of distortion.  The voice is recognizable but either there is something that sounds very staticky or a poor connection or the voice is recognizable but different somehow.  With most EVP’s the voices are very flat and tinny and have odd cadences to them.  The calls differ in those ways, but they stand out.  Sometimes the recipient will have a very weird feeling, like they just know something is very strange about the call.

AB – Throughout the book there are accounts of experimenters claiming to get assistance on using the technology from spirits on the other side and even in other dimensions.  In your experience, do you believe that you have obtained assistance from other entities in your work with EVP?

RG-I have not yet made contact with any groups of entities who are trying to guide me in technology, and that’s probably because of the nature of my work, which is highly individualistic in the way I’ve used it; in paranormal investigations and in problem spirit areas, where other researchers are more oriented in getting instructions on technology and working on set ups and improvements in equipment.  I think it’s just a matter of orientation.  At some point that may open up for me.  But I’m not doing home based research; I’m doing research out in the field.

AB – Have you ever tried experiments at home?

RG – Only in my introduction to EVP many years ago, back in the 80’s when I did my experiments by setting out a magnetic recorder in passive EVP to see if I could get responses.  I really don’t conduct work at home because most of my focus is out there in the field in active cases.  So much of my work deals with the kinds of experiences people are having and I also deal with a lot of problem hauntings.   I’ve used spirit communication tools as one of the approaches in that work.  Other people that we talk about in the book like Margaret Downey who’s one of the most superb researchers in the field out in Long Beach, California.  She’s very home-based.  Her work focuses largely on helping the grieving.  She has been working with personal technicians on the other side to enhance her ability to make those connections.  She was inspired to build a dome studio out in her backyard and to have certain kinds of equipment that she works with.  It’s a very focused kind of work, where as mine is a little more far ranging.

There are groups around the world who are deliberately seeking communication with similar groups on the other side for the purpose of advancing technology.  The work is going on in many different ways.  I think that it’s all contributing to our knowledge of the field and what we can do to improve the bridges.

AB – Apparently there is a true collaboration going on here, between dimensions, and not only is it helping us understand how these communications work, I think it’s helping us understand about who we are as humans and our potential.

RG – This is one of the important aspects of this work.  This really requires us to get beyond the context of the focus on ourselves as human beings; the focus of us as participants in a much bigger reality.  This does not diminish our importance in any way but we need to see ourselves as part of a bigger picture.

AB – There’s a chapter in the book called “Enter the Ethereals” which describe a group of entities, some who never incarnated in physical form, some who lived on earth and even a deceased female scientist from one of earth’s parallel dimensions.  These beings came together to assist the living in building communication bridges to help with experimenters.  What are your thoughts about all of the variety of entities reportedly working from these different dimensions?

RG –It’s quite an interesting assortment of intelligences who are involved in this.  “Technician” is part of a group called “The Rainbow People” and they say that they are in a realm that is so fine in vibration that we wouldn’t be able to comprehend it.  The closest that we can come to thinking of them would be like angels, but they’re not angels.  They have no physical form and never had any physical form and they have no individual names.  They are a collective entity.  Even Technician is part of the collective.  The designation of “Technician” describes his function not his personal name.  It’s very mind expanding to get involved in spirit communication research like this because you have to be able to take on board the existence of parallel dimensions and other realities; an afterlife where people are engaged in pursuits very similar to those on earth and to the existence of other beings in other states of existence who are also participating.

AB: The afterlife as described in this scenario is a planet called “Marduk” – similar to earth but with three suns.  This is how it’s described.  I’ve actually stumbled upon an account in my research in which a man recounts his being abducted by an off world intelligence, brought on board their craft and taken to another “physical planet.”  When he arrived, to his amazement he met many of his deceased family members and friends.  How would this correlate?

RG – The description of Marduk is one of many possible places.  Physics has given us a model of multiple dimensions, just for planet earth.  They’re kind of stacked one on top of another.  There could be entities very different from us in these other dimensions.  There could be almost duplicates of ourselves but different in small ways.  There could be versions of us in these other dimensions doing very similar things.  All of these can come into play in spirit communications.  Individuals – the beings that live in those other dimensions will pass into an afterlife too.  Do they all go to the same place or different realms?  We don’t really know.  But, some of them seem to have the ability to communicate back with the living.

AB – I think it’s fair to say that our state of being while we are here on earth and also what we expect to see and experience on the other side might determine where we go.

RG – I think the afterlife is – at least initially a product of our own thoughts and expectations.  But at some point it begins to evolve into something else; our consciousness changes.  We need a point of orientation.  Otherwise I think it would be too great a shock to go from the physical to the non-physical.  There is an intermediate afterlife that conforms to our expectations.  How well we adapt to that and how willing we are to be liberated from the prison of our expectations determines our advancement into other planes of existence.  And also back into reincarnation.  I think when we reincarnate, we’re not necessarily locked into being human beings on earth, I think we can incarnate in a variety of experiences throughout the cosmos.

AB – Well, from reading this book I gained such a broader perspective on afterlife communication.  There’s so much history in this field.  And most importantly this is not just about learning how to use certain spirit communications devices, this is clearly a book that shows us that we have still so much untapped potential within the human race.  Thank you so much Rosemary for your knowledge and for your time today.  Rosemary Ellen Guiley’s website:
