Shea Glover, a student at the Chicago High School for the arts conducted a social experiment on video. She simply told people (most of whom she didn’t know) that they were beautiful, and filmed their reaction.
She received one surprisingly hostile reaction, but most of the reactions where positive and sweet, reminding us all just how much positive change one small compliment can make in a person’s day.

I have been doing this for years. I have given away at least 5 compliments EVERYDAY for the last 20 years telling people to pay it forward. I’m so glad to see it is FINALLY catching on.

I think if one has the confidence or the wisdom to hold no value on superficiality, the compliment goes without saying. They are a terrific human being. Too bad society has engineered it’s youth to make good looks so important.
It’s up to us a parents to instill an inner strength that supercedes glamour and vanity based esteem. A self secured youth will no doubt take care of their appearance and won’t tease anyone about theirs.

Hmm…I’m different… This kind of compliment means nothing to me, if someone will tell me I’m smart,intiligent etc. that would make my day and bring smile to my face… “you’re beautiful” is an empty word for me
I just ask people that tell me that what drugs they’re on. And when they get their delicate little feelers hurt, and try to argue, out comes the mace. Some of us consider being told that the epitome of shallowness. Sorry, ( not really ) that I refuse to let you feel good about yourself by making me feel like shit. Not everyone wants to hear it.

I see this all the time in my work as a photographer and wonder why more people are not walking around liking and complimenting people off of FB.
Receiving a compliment is about feeling accepted, if we feel acceptance from someone then generally we’re not being challenged so we’re able to relax the walls and our happiness comes out?
Because they really are.
