The Themes and the Best-Selling Subjects for Paintings

What are the types of paintings which sell the best? There are a few broad subjects for paintings that normally appeal to a mass audience. While there are never any guarantees that a given painting will sell, if you stick to these particular areas, you will likely increase your chances of earning a little income from your work.

Whether the subjects of most popular with the masses would be the subjects you want to paint is a question only you as an individual artist can reply. But if your primary motivation for painting is selling the finished products, it's advisable to select subjects that are tried and true. Here are a few kinds of paintings that fit that description.

Best-selling themes:

Disappointment, Existence origin and civilizations, Failure of Expectations, Female personalities, Good and bad, terrific human dangers, Great world characters, Life around, Love, National topics, New age of the strange, Political history, Patience, endurance and struggle, Religion and its roots, Progress manufacturers, Rebellious, Superpowers of the planet, Soul-searching, Ugliness of power, War, Woman, World religions and philosophies.

Abstract Paintings

Since most abstract art doesn't have a familiar subject or link to anything external, individual audiences can interpret an abstract painting for themselves. Abstract paintings are always top sellers as there are different subject areas like work of Piet Mondrian and the fluid paintings of Wassily Kandinsky or Gheorghe Virtosu.

Imitations among these highly popular artists may attract some attention to your paintings, but unlike landscapes, it is likely going to be more difficult to predict which kinds of abstract artwork may resonate with your intended audience. Subcategory that sells well, especially in seaside cities and towns which attract a lot of tourists.

Landscape paintings

Modern and semi-abstract landscapes offering a different Interpretation of a familiar view are also a popular choice for painting sales. Some modern landscape painters prefer to operate outside (en plein air), such as the great Impressionist master Claude Monet. Others prefer to do their paintings from the studio using photos and research sketches from the place they have chosen to paint.

The modern landscape includes more intimate scenes. Recreating an image that has sentimental or nostalgic value may increase the chances that your painting will sell.

The connection between the viewer of a figure or nude painting and its subject can be Powerful, so it's no surprise that this form of art evolves with art buyers. When most painters will examine figures and nudes as part of any introductory art education program, painting figures outside the classroom setting present unique challenges. Well-done figure paintings, particularly those who have nude themes, are among the most popular sellers in galleries and other areas offering paintings for sale. Because they tend to be less expensive.

Best-Selling Media for Paintings

For the most part, prints of paintings sell better than original works, because they tend to be less costly. Limited-edition prints (where a particular number of prints are created, and each one is numbered) are popular because the buyer knows he or she's getting something that's not mass-produced, but that has some special qualities.
