The Eye of Horus is a fascinating ancient Egyptian symbol. Believed to represent protection, royal power, and good health, it has been passed down and revered for generations. New Age groups have even identified similarities between the Eye of Horus and the pineal gland, which is referred to as the ‘third eye’, or seat of intuition.

Regardless of your thoughts on the history of the Eye of Horus, you’re sure to appreciate how the mathematically balanced symbol has been made into a self-sufficient house.

Inhabitat reports that the Eye of Horus Eco-House is an enamoring, entirely self-sufficient home that was built on the Isla Playa de Cleopatra in Turkey. Viewed from above, the structure resembles the magnificent Egyptian symbol.

The artist, Luis de Garrido, applied special measures, such as tilted louvers, planned landscaping, and sufficient ventilation, to mitigate any natural heating from a greenhouse effect.

The Spanish architect, designer, and researcher specializes in sustainable architecture and spends his days designing eco-friendly, self-sustaining buildings. With all of his creations, he aims to maintain very strict health, ecological and environmental criteria.

If his name looks familiar, that’s because he is among the most distinguished eco-architects in the world, having designed and created over 100 unique and sustainable designs.

“Sustainable Architecture meets the needs of its occupants, at any time, anywhere, without jeopardizing the welfare and development of future generations. It involves an honest commitment to human development and social stability, using architectural strategies to optimize resources and materials, promoting renewable energy, minimizing waste and emissions, maintenance, functionality and the price of the buildings and improving the quality of life of its occupants,” says Garrido.

The living area is contained entirely within the multi-level central dome that serves as the eye’s pupil. Steel was utilized to frame the dome and glass panels allow light from the sun to light up the entire home.

“The eye shape of the property was created using photovoltaic panels that work in concordance with a state-of-the-art geothermal system to power the 25 room. The structure harvests rainwater in addition to an on-site biological system that treats wastewater. Lastly, the top floor of the dome is a landscaped, indoor terrace from which one can relax and take in the strikingly beautiful terrain from all directions.”
