Success can be achieved in many aspects of our life. Personal success can be found through the foundation of a family. Spiritual success can be realized through living and practicing God’s words and teachings. Social success can be recognized by having a lasting friendship and meaningful interactions. Professional success can be reached through career advancements.
What are the things that can help someone achieve professional success? Apart from sheer talent, skill and competency; having a healthy attitude towards your professional life can also put you in advantage and closer to your career goals. I once heard that talent can help you go places, but it is your attitude that makes you stay.
In order to have consistent growth and development, here are some attitudes we need to integrate that will guarantee a successful career.
Be Critical About Yourself
There are performance reviews that your supervisor may use to evaluate you and gauge your work. They are important measures to know your standing in the company and how your colleagues perceive you but it is much better if you can keep assessing yourself. Being your own evaluator, you will be able to identify how you can do better and achieve your short-term goals faster, even without direction from your boss. Remember that your scope and limitation is only set by yourself, thus only you can expand your horizon.
When you are assessing your performance, note what you're doing positively and negatively and see how you can improve. Spend time figuring out your negative traits and see how you can improve. Is it time management issues? Are you just not happy at your job? If you aren’t happy at your job it will be very hard to improve. If happiness is the issue, it's time to look for a different job.
Understanding Breeds Empathy
When you start working, it is expected that you will meet different people with different attitudes, backgrounds, and character. Not everyone will be all sunny and bright. Do not expect people to have the same kind of reaction or response you give to them. Understanding them and their situation will help you learn how to show compassion and empathy towards them.
Working with compassion and empathy can help you do your job better by truly understanding how to deal with people.
Action Speaks Louder Than Words
It does not only apply to relationships, but it could also be practiced in the work setting. Delivering and materializing production and work is far better than empty promises and words. You can boast about how much words you can type or how you never miss a deadline, but work is measured qualitatively and quantitatively. You need to ensure you can back up your words with talent, skills and hard work.
Be Resilient
If you haven’t been scolded or miserably failed at work, then you haven’t really lived a life. Committing a mistake is a normal way for people to learn important lessons in their life, but sometimes mistakes lead to some painful scolding and harsh consequences. If you are soft, you are likely to just cry on the corner and break. Being resilient will help you adapt faster, jump back on your feet and learn to live with the trauma and stress. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
Learn To Focus
It does not have to be laser focus, but at least it needs to be clear to you what your priorities are and hold on to them until the very end. It can be quite easy to get distracted and get lost, especially when you are exposed to new possibilities in life. It is ok to take a peek at other ventures as long as you know you are serious about the change.
List your goals and set a time to check them whether it is daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Keep track of what you need to accomplish.
