A Female Doctor Answers Your Embarrassing Sex Questions

I recently asked my boyfriend what he’d think if I decided to drop everything, go back to school, and become an ob/gyn. The idea is intriguing; I talk to cool as hell ob/gyns all the time for pieces about why cranberry juice doesn’t cure UTIs, how sex changes after childbirth, and more. These are the people who text me things like, “Sure, give me a call, if I don’t answer I’m delivering a baby,” like it’s no big that it’s their JOB to help perpetuate the species. Unfortunately, my little ob/gyn fantasy was short-lived because I know med school would obliterate my soul. But I still admire all doctors who deal with women’s health, which is why I love this new installment of Glamour‘s video series Asking for a Friend: Your Embarrassing Sex Questions Answered by Dr. Raj.

The video starts with Roshini Raj, M.D., associate professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine and an attending physician at NYU Langone Medical Center, saying, “it’s very unlikely your partner will do any damage just by thrusting in a vigorous or hard manner.” Well, hello to you, too!

She goes on to discuss period sex. It’s still somewhat taboo even though we’re all just humans trying to squeeze some pleasure out of life in order to distract ourselves from the heaviness of this mortal coil, so, yeah, forbidding yourself from having sex for an entire week each month isn’t really necessary. “Many women really enjoy sex even more during their period, and there’s no reason to stop. Even oral sex is perfectly safe and healthy during your period,” says Raj. But as she notes, the blood makes you a little more susceptible to contracting or passing along a sexually transmitted infection, so it’s even more necessary to practice safe sex.
