Are Copper-Infused Face Masks Effective?

Posted by on May 21, 2020 in Health, Prevention with 0 Comments

Face masks are now a way of life. The current Covid-19 pandemic has made face masks an essential part of everyday wear as they reduce infection by covering the nose and mouth. Not only are face masks essential, but they also protect the environment by preventing microbial droplets from lingering in the air. Face masks are now available everywhere and in different materials which differ in longevity, permeability and size.

Copper-infused masks in particular, are gaining much popularity being the most preferred by individuals, with the Kn99 mask taking the lead. Why the fascination in copper face masks?

Scientific evidence

According to scientists, copper-infused masks are antibacterial and protect against microbes in the vapor which carry the virus. The benefits of copper as an agent for killing infections have been dated back through centuries. Studies and reports over the years show that the use of copper face masks have always concluded no bacterial infections being found on the masks after exposure to different types of influenza viruses.

The copper oxide is infused into textiles by installing a copper mesh underneath the fabric, automatically granting the face mask potent biocidal properties. This in turn bestows it with anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, as the copper ions abruptly destroy the molecular structure of the virus which often causes mutation.

Dr.Gabbay, a textile scientist at Argaman, suggests solutions combating healthcare-related infections in the hospitals through embracing copper-infused textiles in the hospitals. This prevents patient infection through hospital beddings and other fabrics that might be infected. Copper-infused masks are incredibly beneficial to an individual, and instantly destroy the Coronavirus and any other bacteria within minutes.

Microbiologist Phyllis Kuhn states that the copper masks allow for the insertion of small deposits of copper into the nasal area, which acts immediately in inciting an anti-inflammatory reaction and averts further spread of the Covid-19.

Copper, also known for its longevity and durability, is the surest option in the fight against Covid-19. As the cidal properties in the textile last a lifetime, the face mask will always benefit the wearer up to one year.

“Installing only 10% of copper on surfaces will prevent daily infections and save thousands of people in a single day,” says a microbiological researcher in the U.K. This highlights the strong and beneficial properties of copper in the health and science field.

The cost of copper-infused masks varies depending on the source, with most masks retailing from around $10 to $70. These face masks cost a bit more than regular cloth and surgical masks.

Companies like  sell standard copper masks around $10.95. Other companies such as Myant C-200, Copper Compression, and Atoms are among a few companies that offer a variety of copper masks for the daily user.

Tips to consider

Despite the numerous benefits of copper face masks, there are some tips you should consider when purchasing such a mask:

  • Number of layers

The CDC recommends that face masks have multiple hydrophobic layers of covering, and for copper face masks, the standards remain the same. This helps in providing adequate protection for the wearer thus triple protection, as the copper layer is the first external layer. Most premium copper face masks in the market have a minimum of four layers which block 99% of particles; however the two-layered and three-layered copper masks also reduce droplet transmission as opposed to a single layer.

  • Size of the pores

The size of pores in face masks considers breathability depending on the fabric used. For instance, least porous materials will complicate breathing and more porous ones may not be adequately sufficient for preventing the virus.

  • Material

The type of material used whether fully cotton fibers or a mix of cotton and polyester is considered when it comes to how much they protect against virus infiltration. This is all dependent on an individual's allergies to the type of material used.

Care and maintenance

The copper face masks are different from the other fabric masks and should, therefore, be handled carefully by:

  • Weekly washing: As the virus does not last for more than a few minutes on the copper mask, washing it once a week is sufficient enough. Copper masks are also self-sanitizing.
  • Use plain distilled water: Distilled water slightly above room temperature is sufficient to remove dust or grime from the mask.
  • Leave the mask in water for 10 – 15 minutes: This gives the mask adequate time to soak.

Unlike the surgical mask, the copper mask is washable, reusable, and filters 99% of germs. Proper maintenance and care are vital to ensure the face mask lasts for a considerable amount of time. Copper-infused masks are recommended to frontline health workers as well as the general population.
