I didn't know that I was going to write a children's booklet alone a whole series, but this is how it began…
2018 was an emotionally tough year for my family. That July we lost our dog to cancer very shortly after his diagnosis, which had been completely unexpected. And two months prior to that my mother, who had been doing very well with her cancer treatments since 2012, got a serious infection, which ultimately led to her passing in December. In the course of five months, two lives that had been so intricately tied to mine were gone.
Exactly one month after Mom died, I was walking through my house thinking about how everything was going to be different because of these losses. How I spent my time and energy was going to change. The spaces that had been filled before would now be open to receive something new and different, and I wondered what I was going to do moving forward. I even wondered aloud how I was supposed to serve.
I hadn't expected a response, but within maybe twenty minutes, the universe answered. In a flash of insight, I was “told” that I would write a series of children's books about the energy of love, the name of the series, that the series would be written in rhyme scheme, the first two lines of the first book, and who the illustrator was meant to be!
Now you might be asking yourself how something as specific as that could have ever materialized. Well, that insight has a history that was decades in the making, and this is my take on it… When you combine lots and lots of babysitting with later becoming an elementary school teacher, there's my lifelong connection to children. When you add in my many years of studying esoteric philosophy and energy medicine, there's my connection to energy. And when you mix the rest of LIFE into that big pot, that was stirred occasionally and seasoned to taste, there's the recipe for that flash that was then called into being by the act of wonder.
I believe that wonder is a motivator and activator in the universe. When I wondered about my future, and especially, how I was supposed to serve, I sent out a call that had no attachment to any kind of outcome. Because my initial thought had quickly morphed into wonder, the rules of engagement changed. With thinking, you try to direct effects, but the beauty and magic of wondering are that it opens you to possibility – possibility beyond what your mind plans or desires for you.
This experience is what meditating is supposed to achieve, but since I've never been a traditional meditator, I've had to figure things out on my own. My practice, if you want to call it that, has always involved ponderings and flashes. When I wonder about or ponder something, many times I will receive a flash of information relating to it. There's never been a whole, complete reveal before, such as with the book series, but, hey, I'll take whatever I can get!
When you are daydreaming, imagining, “in the zone”, contemplating, pondering, wondering, etc., you are literally out of your mind, which makes space for a new bit of reality to flow into your consciousness. I believe that it works like this because when you aren't fixated on what you want to have happened, you're available to the energy of what can happen.
Try to catch yourself the next time you are “spacing out” while driving, or in the shower, or staring out the window, or getting lost in a project. Where do you go when your mind is otherwise occupied? What flashes in for you? What does it feel like to be there? Time seems to stretch in these moments, doesn't it? Keep that awareness with you so that you can build on it and grow into it, because you never know where your recipe may be able to take you!
