Everything is dual; Everything has poles; Everything has its pair of opposites; Like and unlike are the same; Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; Extremes meet; All truths, are but half-truths; All paradoxes may be reconciled. –The Law of Polarity
Everything flows, out and in; Everything has its tides; All things rise and fall; The pendulum swing manifests in everything; The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; Rhythm compensates. – The Law of Rhythm
The Hermetic Principles of Polarity & Rhythm have always been my two most favorite in that they are the greatest reminders that separation is an illusion…that when extremes agree to meet in the middle, harmony is achieved. Here I share how these two laws can be applied to your own life to bring congruence and balance.
The Law of Polarity
The Law of Polarity shows us that even though we can imagine two extreme opposites such as a freezing Eskimo in the Arctic and a sweating camel in the Mohave desert, they are the SAME. Yes, you read that right! If you moved the coldest cold and the hottest hot in the direction towards one another, they would eventually meet at a neutral degree, and yet we can never quite determine the exact moment when cold ends and hot begins or vice versa.
This shows they are of the same origin, just a different degree of the same expression. They are, as the Kybalion itself states, “…identical in nature, but different in degree”.
This also applies to light and dark, good and evil, love and hate…
And when you can fully grasp this principle it allows you to looks at all areas of your life in a complete new way! It brings opposites; the things we might judge, the people we might label into focus. Because when you can stop taking sides in your own life; when you can stop feeling like you alway HAVE to stand for something, be for this, or be against that, you can think of The Law of Polarity and remember that there ARE no sides; just a center point that has moved out in different directions!!!
The Law of Rhythm
The Law of Rhythm shows us that there is a natural order to things, and that eventually all things come back around like how a pendulum swings. This is one law that if you do not learn how to master it, it WILL master you. What this means is, when we allow ourselves to get so caught up in life, it will manifest in our bodies as stress, sickness, disease. And in our lives as chaos, negativity, disorder, unhappiness, etc.
To master this law, you must be able to look at the ebb and flow of life from a netural place and also be able to polarize (where the Law of Polarization comes into play) yourself at a place you want to rest where you will not be affected by this inevitable to and fro of life.
This is not to say to stop caring about things or no longer giving a shit about your life; not at all. This is saying to care SO much, that you are willing to cease allowing yourself getting lost in the emotional drama of action and reaction (yet another Hermetic Law) and instead empowering yourself with the gift of observance so you can make sound decisions and act at the right time on the right feelings, which is the first step to Self-Mastery.
When one begins to walk the path of Self- Mastery, one takes a journey that never really ends. Even when you try and convince yourself that you give up at times. Once you make the choice, the path is laid and you walk it, whether the Universe has to drag you, or pull you kicking and screaming. So, it is best to get to know the workings of this divine celestial system and your place in it, so as to give yourself the best chance to direct the way your life actually goes!
I think most of us would say we would like to have a say and control over how things go in our lives. Well, who is to say we can’t, but ourselves? We are truly our worst critics in life and when we change that inner voice from one that is always nagging and putting us down and using these Laws against us, to one that is encouraging, pushing us to higher places and wanting us to use or gifts and talents to help others and raise awareness in the global consciousness…we become some of the most powerful beings in the entire Universe. But we've simply never been taught this.
True power always comes from within us, and the Hermetic Laws of Polarity & Rhythm working in tandem when applied to your life can do wonders to help you stay in that zero-point state; that place of calm neutrality where you are able to look at life with a connected knowing that we are all One. And that we are also everything and nothing and my goodness…that sure is something. 🙂

Ok, Tamara, I loved your message and your writing. There is just a mechanical error that disturbed me. It was this euphemism of the camel and the Eskimo. “… we can imagine two extreme opposites such as a freezing Eskimo in the Arctic and a sweating camel in the Mohave desert, they are the SAME.”
I know when you re-read this you will see how this is a rather ugly misuse of comparison. I’ll give you “sweating shepherd, sweating hunter, sweating traveler…any other use of the word that includes a human being. Not a camel. Or is it just me? Awesome ideas and writing. Keep up the good work.
