If you have a weakness in one of your chakras and find it really challenging to heal or shift, it may be due to the fact that that need didn't get fulfilled in your most formative years — between the time you were conceived and the end of your seventh year.
During this time (womb through age 7), we are all like little pieces of malleable clay and when certain basic needs don't get met, we tend to create coping mechanisms that become our default mode for operating in the world.
The good news is this: your default mode CAN be shifted. But it takes awareness, self-love and tenacity.
This is the first video of a series I'm creating to help you understand the need of each chakra, which shows up in each of your most formative years.
Here are the Chakra Life Cycles that correspond to your first seven years:
Age 1 = 1-1 (Root-Root)
Age 2 = 1-2 (Root-Sacral)
Age 3 = 1-3 (Root-Solar Plexus)
Age 4 = 1-4 (Root-Heart)
Age 5 = 1-5 (Root-Throat)
Age 6 = 1-6 (Root-3rd Eye)
Age 7 = 1-7 (Root-Crown)
As you can see, the root chakra is the primary chakra for all of these years, but in each year, there is also a secondary chakra that is key to your development. What this means is that for your first seven years of life, your developmental focus is on family, safety, learning to live in a body and to be a human (which is very different than being a spirit which is what you were before you birthed into this physical realm).
Within the framework of building your root chakra, each year has a different focus. When you are one, that focus is all root, safety and getting your basic needs met. But by your second birthday, the focus turns toward play and interacting with your caregivers. At three, you step into the independence of your fiery solar plexus (which is why the “terrible twos” begin a few months before that third birthday).
At four, you come into your heart and love is the focus. At five, you got to school and your throat chakra kicks in as you learn to be more social and to write and expand yourself. At six, you come into the magical world of your imagination and intuition and at seven, you get curious about God and the cosmos.
That's the big picture that we'll be exploring with this video series.
This week, we begin by looking at the need of your root chakra — safety. This need for safety is closely tied into the human need to have certainty. We want to know what we can expect (so we'll stay safe) and the unknown is scary.
That's why horror films are so scary. Not because the CGI effects on the monster are so creepy looking, but because we don't know when the monster or killer is going to pop out and grab someone.
As pure spirit, we are one with everything, so nothing is scary (everything is us, and we are everything). But the root chakra is the deepest, lowest chakra where we are as far from our spiritual essence as we can be, so suddenly the world is full of shadows, threats and things to fear.
The root chakra is the realm of tribe and banding together to lessen our fear of any threats to our physical survival and existence. And in this chakra it is totally normal to desire safety and certainty.
In an ideal world, we would come into this world and our caregivers and tribe would make us feel safe and protected, and all our basic needs would be totally fulfilled. But humans are human, and many if not most caregivers fall short of this perfect scenario.
Most of us can't recall what our life was like inside our mother's womb or during our first couple years on this planet, but if we have a weak root chakra, there's a good likelihood, we didn't have a genuinely safe environment as an infant.
If you didn't have a safe environment from womb until age two, it's likely you've either made safety unimportant in your life, or you've made it extremely important. The latter makes more sense, but it usually more uncommon. I see more clients with weak root chakras who make safety unimportant.
Why?
I think the most likely reason is this: in our first seven years, we are laying down our neural pathways and habits. When we grow up in an unsafe environment, we learn that that is OUR environment, and begin recreating that environment, even if it seems counter-intuitive to do so. In other words, as we get older, we create what we're used to. That makes sense, doesn't it?
The root chakra is all about routine and habits. So what we experience early on becomes are way of being, our default mode.
Now, you can actually shift your patterns. But you need to be aware and tenacious.
Congratulations! Just the fact that you're reading this says volumes about the expansive soul that you are. You're not here to repeat willy-nilly the experience of your childhood. You're here to make conscious choices and create the live you want to live.
One of the most powerful ways to change the patterns of your root chakra years is to work with your inner child and go in and meet the needs that didn't get met.
So for fulfilling the root chakra need for safety, you want to go in and see that very young infant you (anytime from womb until before your second birthday that feels the most compelling to you) and be there in support.
The magical phrase here is:
I am here for you.
Say that one and see how your little infant self feels about you being there for him or her. Say that one over and over until you have no more feeling around it. Then, if you'd like, you can add either of these:
You are safe.
You are taken care of.
If you don't feel totally safe in your body and in this physical world, try this exercise every day this week: Find a mirror and imagine you're talking to your little infant self as you say, “Precious one, I'm here for you. You are safe and taken care of.”
Good for you for taking the time to love yourself in a deep and healing way! As you love yourself, you expand the love on this planet and add to the peace and healing for all.
Much love,
Vicki
