“Every man can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.”
Irving Wallace
Ground Hog Day Revisited
Ever feel like you are on a life-loop — repeating the same thing day in and day out?
Well done if you answered ‘no’ to this — you’re doing great. However, most of us have our moments when we feel the monotony of our daily schedule creep up and douse us with the cold, watery pangs of tedium.
Thing is, what do we do to add some spice? What can we do to inject some adventure? Well, I suppose I should offer up some advice seeing I've got you here, so here it goes:
- Get Creative — start looking at your schedule and see if there is any way you can add a sparkle to your routine. Even if this means blasting music and putting your Cyndi Lauper face on or getting your Freddy Mercury act together whilst vacuuming (after all, girls just want to have fun and boys, well, boys just want to break free — right?). Anything out of the ordinary can add zest to your life. Or perhaps it may come in the form of you and your children listening to an old classic audiobook, that you have been threatening to read to them, whilst commuting to school or extra-mural activities. You’ll be surprised how everyone starts to enjoy being stuck in traffic!
- Do Something Unexpected — this depends on your personality type, of course. Try doing something out of character. Show the world you’re unpredictable (in a good way). This doesn’t mean sticking pencils up your nose at the office but it could entail wearing your AC/DC shirt to the PTA meeting or treating yourself to a night on the town with your BFF. Give yourself a shake-up, prove to yourself you’ve still got a pulse. Boring is as boring does (thanks for that one, Forrest!)
- Tourist Hangouts — here’s something different that’s usually a hoot! Go hang out where there’s a lot of tourists. I tell you, it’s great stuff! You get to see and experience different cultures on your own doorstep. I used to like to loiter at Boulders in Cape Point (a penguin colony near where I used live) because I would see all types there and it’s great fun to watch all the different reactions to our little black and white flightless seabirds (especially with the foreign children who have never seen one before). I know this may seem like a strange suggestion but it really bolsters that sense of unity with the rest of the world and sometimes gives you an unexpected appreciation for your own country and it's natural beauty that you oft overlook.
- Read — I know some of you reading this are already bookworms but for those who haven’t set foot in a library since the dawn of reality TV, dust off that library card and go scouting for some good books. Just reading about other people’s adventures can kick-start your own ideas for merry pursuit and wild exploits. You can't compare reading to TV…you just can't.
- Commit — lastly, just commit to trying to seek out adventure. Catch yourself when you slip into complacency. Go for a walk when you feel bored or give yourself that extra little nudge out the door when it comes to socializing and networking. There is a whole world out there. I won’t lie to you, it’s full of crazed weirdo’s but there are also some incredibly fantastic people just waiting for the opportunity to thrill you within an inch of your life (when you meet them, please inbox me their contact details).
Know thyself but try to get to know others too. People have the strangest way of providing irrevocably bedazzling information and star-studded ideas that gets our saliva flowing and all we need to do is make the effort to mingle or strike up that conversation. I hope this list has given you some fresh new ideas to start cooking up a few new recipes that will let the flavor of life carry you to tastier grounds.
“When all is said and done, monotony may after all be the best condition for creation.”
Margaret Sackville
Right, in saying that, where did I leave my gorilla costume? I need to go out and get some bread, eggs, milk and frighten a few locals.
