After considering further information from Credit Suisse, Oxfam revised last year’s figures which had found 62 people as wealthy as the ‘bottom’ half of the population. This year’s statistic, now just eight people with that same wealth, shocked the authors of the report — and they’ve suggested measures to take to begin bridging the divide.

As the gap between the rich and poor in the U.S. continues to grow with more and more wealth being held by fewer people, 63 percent of Americans say that this distribution is unfair, according to a new Gallup survey published Monday. Additionally, 52 percent of respondents say that the problem of inequality should be solved with “heavy taxes on the rich,” a proportion that has risen from 45 percent since Gallup first began asking that question in 1998.

The wealth gap between the country’s upper-income and middle-class families has risen to a record high, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. “The latest data reinforce the larger story of America’s middle-class household wealth stagnation over the past three decades,” the report states.
