As face masks have become ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives, they’ve also grown to litter every corner of our neighborhoods, from storm drains to creeks, parks to beaches. And now, it turns out that our oceans are swimming with face masks, according to a new report from marine conservation NGO OceansAsia. #facemasks #OceanPollution

While renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough warned the world’s oceans are “under threat now as never before in human history,” green groups on Tuesday said a United Nations resolution to end plastic pollution in the world’s oceans does not go nearly far enough to combat the problem, and stressed that more urgent action is needed to eradicate the damage before it’s too late.

In a recent report by the UK Government Office for Science titled “Future of the Sea,” a grim scenario is painted with regards to ocean pollution by plastics. The report states that total plastic in the oceans will increase from 50 million metric tons in 2015 to 150 million metric tons by 2025, and since there is little to no political action or orchestrated effort to reduce the usage and dependency on plastics, this number will continue to climb from there.
