For many of us, feeling a bit more chipper than usual during the holidays comes naturally. The simple songs, sights, and smells of the “season” from the olfactory caress of cinnamon and pine to the visual joy-fest of lights and celebration act as triggers to our inner children to come out and play.
These are the types of people I see standing in long lines in the mall with smiles still plastered to their faces, regardless of the fact a hungry baby is wailing in one ear and the unfinished shopping list wails in the other. And while it might go unnoticed to some people, or even be considered confusing or annoying to others, people like this always catch my attention. But not only during the holiday season, for a patient and peaceful spirit is one that is recognizable all year long…
And when I do happen to witness one of these content and happy souls, it always acts as a friendly reminder to myself to take a quick inventory of my own mood, my own attention and my own focus for all are intertwined; and it is almost always these kinds of people who spark my memory as to how vital it is to “keep the peace”.
To clarify, I’m not talking about becoming a push-over or assuming a pacifist role in your life, but rather coming into the awareness of how important the inner state of contentment really is when it comes to not only manifesting, but also maintaining peace throughout all areas of your life, regardless of what might be happening at the moment.
To further explain, a person like that who may seem almost oblivious to the Christmas chaos around them is not one who has tuned out the world or has become numb to their surroundings. Well, they could be but I’m referring to a soul-type you can FEEL alive with joy, bliss, and light for life. Not someone who has just “checked out” to get by.
Simply put, what a person like this is actually doing is choosing to accept their environment exactly as it is, and instead of bringing disgust, impatience or annoyance to the moment, they are bringing to the moment, who they are consciously choosing to be instead. And to me, there is no denying it when you see someone actively choosing to protect their inner peace, or what I like to call “harnessing your harmony”.
While the holidays are an excellent time to be reminded of this concept and to practice the art of “inner stillness” regardless of what is unfolding in regards to “outer chaos”, we can ultimately use this practice each and every day of our lives, in even the most seemingly trivial of situations. And it’s my honest opinion, developed via my own experience with this, that the more you consciously practice this, the easier, or perhaps better said, the simpler it becomes. It has also been my experience that nothing worthwhile is ever easy, but it can always be simple…
So, this year give it a try. If you find yourself on Christmas Eve, or any other time you can literally feel your patience being tested by long lines and wailing babies in whatever form they take as the Universe’s gift of opportunity to you. All the gifts of the Universe take real effort to unwrap, but if you put your entire heart into it, these gifts will always bring you back to the present; and ultimately your most harmonious Self.
Happy Holidays and Yuletide Blessings!
