The first basic math skill for young children is to learn how to count. But, kindergarteners may not understand the importance of numbers and represent quantities and have relationships to other numbers. By getting the concept of addition, young children can master the relationships between numbers and how quantities are related to each other. For kids, the first operation of learning math skills is by starting with addition and subtraction. Kids get to learn addition and subtraction between kindergarten and the fourth grade. Learning basic addition skills at the kindergarten level helps children in mastering the subject of math in elementary school.

Addition means putting together two or more quantities. The addition takes place between two or more numbers by adding them together.  In the early education of math parents play a crucial role. Parents provide their kids with not only math addition games or toys but also serve as role models illustrating kids how math is used in day to day activities. Children who encounter their parents doing more maths related activities engage themselves more often in maths activities. This helps them to build early math skills which benefits them in the later learning process.

  • At the first grade kids learn to add single and double-digit numbers.
  • At the second standard, they solve more complex problems of addition. They also learn regrouping
  • At the fourth grade kids learn to add multi-digit numbers without the help of objects and pictures to model it.

Kids find it difficult to learn math because of various reasons. One of the common difficulties is with a set of skills that are more basic than addition. These kinds of skill sets are known as number sense. It allows kids to play with numbers.

How To Learn Addition At Home

Kids should practise addition at home under the guidance of their parents or mentors. It will help them to improve their math skills. Both parents and kids together can try the below mentioned fun activities at home.

  • Make your kid learn to count by asking them how many things they see around them. Try to find out simple math tools available at your home. Parents should start with a simple counting process before jumping to complex ones. Learning math inside the home environment will help kids to be confident inside the classroom.
  • Ask your child to show math operations using markers or crayons to make it more fun-loving and creative.
  • Kids can also learn math by playing math board games such as Connect Four. It teaches them concepts like sequencing and learning.
