When I began to write Discover Your Soul Template, I was living on the fiftieth floor of a high-rise building in Hong Kong. The first weekend I started to write, two kites continuously circled around outside my window. Kites are very large birds that glide about in great circles, effortlessly sailing upon the waves of the air. Time and time again they glided within a few yards of my window. It was as if nature was sending me a message that it was time to fly, to just allow the grace and beauty of Spirit to flow.
It is in presence that the true beauty of synchronicity can be sensed and appreciated. In presence, the mind resonates at a higher frequency. When the mind is not present it gravitates toward the lower vibrations of hurt pasts and fearful futures. If I had not been fully present, I may have missed the significance of those kites outside my window.
In modern science all meaning has been stripped from nature. The idea of the random dominates. At a certain level of consciousness—what I call the alienated mind—it certainly looks that way. The links between events cannot be perceived. Higher mind, with its Integrated Intelligence, is a little like the idea of hyperspace. In sci-fi movies, a spacecraft can move from one point in the cosmos to another by collapsing the space/time between them. It is as if two points in space are folded together within a moment, and the idea of “far” and “near” collapses. Then the spacecraft reappears in the second location. In three-dimensional space/ time, we cannot perceive the link between things in different locations, but we can learn to feel it.
How do you determine the “meaning” of a synchronicity? Allow the silence of presence. Simply let go and allow the moment to speak to you. Permit the way of knowing to unfold—via a voice from within, inner images, and especially the Feeling Sense. If nothing comes to you, that is fine. The ego may try to impose meaning upon an event, typically one that fits its agenda. So, if there is no information, no feeling, no meaning, then that is OK. Just let it go.
When you begin to trouble yourself about the meaning of an event, you immediately go into the mind and lose presence.
Blunt Synchronicity
Synchronicity weaves together your vision, your psyche, and the universe. The messages are often profound. However, sometimes they are a bit blunt, and the meaning may not be what you’d prefer to acknowledge!
One day almost two decades ago, I had a dream early in the morning. I dreamed that the police were on the lookout for Jack the Ripper. He was lurking about, but he was being rather stealthy in his ways—not unlike you’d expect from a serial killer and rapist. I awoke with the dream fresh in my mind.
It wasn’t the kind of storyline that makes for a good start to your day. Still, it seemed to fit in with some of the inner work I’d been doing on myself, related to my issues with women. Was there a part of me that contained the rapacious rage of Jack the Ripper? It wasn’t something I cared to dwell on. I shuddered and pushed the dream aside.
Later, I drove to the international boys’ school where I was working. As I was on the road I pulled up behind another vehicle. My eyes were suddenly drawn to a car sticker on the bumper of the car. It read “Jack’s Back!” (an advertisement for whiskey). A shiver went down my spine. It seemed that the universe was just not going to let me rest on this one.
At school I entered my first class, a vibrant form two English group, containing boys aged around fourteen years old. The previous night, I had asked them to write the opening line of a mystery story. The first thing I was going to do that morning was to get some students to read that first sentence aloud to the rest of the class. The boys shuffled in and I readied myself for the first task of the day. For me, this was in part intuitive.
I brought my mind fully into presence by concentrating on my breath, allowing myself to simply “be” with the boys. I stood before them, looked around the classroom and sensed where the energy was coming from (a process I had learned from my spiritual teachers). The decision was made via the Feeling Sense, which is attuned by presence. When my eyes came to rest on James, a jovial, freckle-faced fellow, I got the deep knowing that I was looking for.
“James, can you read us what you have written?”
James stood up happily. However, he had done much more than what I had asked. He had not only written the opening sentence, but had also gone on and completed the entire story. What is more, he had also misunderstood my instruction. I had told him to read only the first sentence, but he continued on. I had not expected this, but decided to go with the flow and allowed him to continue.
James began to read his story of a woman who was brutally raped and murdered. My ears picked up. The police went on a hunt for the man responsible, James said. They found him and tried to arrest him, but he fought back.
“The man turned and faced them like a wild animal,” James read. “The policeman fired, and the man fell to the ground screaming. As he fell silent and death overtook him, a dark and horrible shadow rose out of the dead man’s body. It was the spirit of Jack the Ripper!”
I gulped. “Ok, thanks for that, James,” I said. “That was great.”
But I could not help myself.
“James, where did you get the idea for that story?”
“I dunno,” he chirped back with typical teenage nonchalance.
Now skeptical readers might think I am not telling the truth in what I just wrote. Maybe I collapsed some things that happened at different times into one anecdote. But I have not. Those synchronous events—the Jack the Ripper dream, the “Jack’s Back” sticker, and James’s Jack the Ripper story all happened within the space of a couple of hours. Note, though, that the final part emerged from my allowing the process to unfold in a way I had not expected, by releasing control and allowing Integrated Intelligence to take over. If I had not read the energy in the room and picked out James, and if I had told James to stop reading after the first sentence, the synchronicity would not have reached its crescendo.
That synchronicity invited me to face something within myself: the part that had been deeply hurt by certain female figures from my childhood. It was related to sexual energy and what it means to be male. The universe spoke. It had something unpleasant to tell me, but I put aside my ego, the fear of my shadow side. I listened and took the necessary action I was being “asked” to take.
This synchronicity was part of the evolution of my soul. At the beginning of my spiritual journey, several years before, I had asked Spirit that I might learn to love. At the time I put out that prayer, I did not realize that it would require years of inner work. In that classroom in New Zealand, years later, Spirit was continuing to answer the call through the medium of a freckle-faced schoolboy.
James did not say it, but his words contained the energy of a hidden meaning. Love requires that we allow the light to penetrate our darkness—right to the core. If I had known what was required for a guy like me to learn about love, I would have changed the order and put in a request for pizza instead. Spirit is a bit sneaky at times. It only gives us as much knowledge as we can handle at any given time.
But are we willing to listen?

I have had several instances of synchronicity such as this. It is true that to “let go and let it flow” often gives you more than you bargained for! I appreciate your sharing this story.
