Accidents happen. This is a common phrase used in almost every household daily, Including yours. It's important to know what to do when these accidents happen. The most common form of injury is swelling; this is also what causes the most amount of pain.
Say a small child is running through your yard, and he trips and twists his ankle. As a result, the child is in a lot of pain. Most often, this pain is because of swelling. There are simple home remedies to relieve ankle pain and swelling.
Now, this does not mean that you shouldn't get the inflamed area checked out by a professional. Even though there are ways to bring the swelling down at home, this doesn't always mean that there isn't something else wrong. That being said here, here are some ways that you can keep ankle swelling down at home.
Elevate and ice
Swelling is a result of pressure built up in your blood vessels. Elevation takes that pressure out of the blood vessels, thus relieving the swelling. Also, elevation can help keep you off of the swollen area. This reduces pain and prevents any more damage.
Ice is a popular treatment for pain, most people know this, but most don't know why. Ice helps minimize the swelling in an area, and it helps prevent injury. If you ice a recently injured area before it swells, then it may never swell up.
Stay off, but keep on
It's essential to find a medium. Staying off of the inflamed area is critical, but moving around is also important. Staying off of your foot helps prevent future injury and relieve pain. Too much of this can be a bad thing. You must be active in your injured area as well.
Some good ways to find this balance of use and rest is to visit a physical therapist. They will give you exercises to help with recovery as well as time to rest. Also, if you’re in the car for a long time, get out every hour or so to move and help your recovery time.
Don't push through
The worst thing you can do for an injury is to try to work or play through it. There are only bad things to come of this, and most of the time, it leads to a worse injury. It may be hard for some of you to let go and say you need time off for injury, but it is essential for your recovery.
Think about it this way, what's more important, missing a few shifts or a couple of games, or never being able to work or play again.
It's easy to get hurt. It's not always easy to recover from being hurt. Taking the right steps to get better is vital in the recovery process. Most importantly, be smart. It's easy to get caught up in fun activities and push through the pain because you are enjoying yourself.
This can rapidly change the status of your injury. Sometimes you could go from almost recovered to re-injured in the snap of a finger. It's that fast. Doing the right thing is almost always the hardest thing to do.
