Other Countries Expect More of Their Leaders. So Should We.

Most Americans don’t know it, but in 1977 the U.S. actually signed an international treaty called the UN Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, which mandates government responsibility to ensure their citizens do more than merely survive. Unfortunately, one U.S. administration after the other has completely disregarded it, and Congress never ratified it. Our leaders have apparently judged that we either don’t need — or don’t deserve — things like an adequate standard of living and universal health care. 164 countries have ratified the treaty, but ours won’t. Are their people more deserving than we are? As one dizzy U.S. congressman claims, “Nobody dies because they don’t have access to health care.”

Twelve Tips For Making Sense Of Our World

Caitlin Johnstone: In an environment that is saturated with mass media propaganda, it can be hard to figure out which way’s up, let alone get an accurate read on what’s going on in the world. Here are a few tips I’ve learned which have given me a lot of clarity in seeing through the haze of spin and confusion. Taken separately they don’t tell you a lot, but taken together they paint a very useful picture of the world and why it is the way it is.

‘What Do You Call a Country That Institutionalizes Child Abuse?’: Democrats Hold Sit-In Demanding End to Trump Family Separation Policy

As the heart-wrenching story of a Honduran mother having her baby daughter ripped from her arms by federal authorities as she was breastfeeding provided yet another example of the immense cruelty of President Donald Trump’s family separation policy, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) on Wednesday led a sit-in outside the offices of Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) demanding that asylum-seekers be released from government detention and reunited with their loved ones immediately.

How To Suck Carbon Dioxide From The Sky For Fuels and More

Someday, the gasoline you buy might trace its heritage to carbon dioxide pulled straight out of the sky rather than from oil pumped out of the ground. By removing emitted carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turning it into fresh fuels, engineers at a Canadian firm have demonstrated a scalable and cost-effective way to make deep cuts in the carbon footprint of transportation with minimal disruption to existing vehicles.

‘Dark Moment of Shame’: With Explicit US Backing, Saudi Attack on Yemen’s Humanitarian Lifeline Begins

With a “green light” from the Trump administration and essential military support from the U.S. government, Saudi-led forces plowed ahead with an assault on the Yemeni port city of Hodeida on Wednesday, brushing aside dire warnings from international humanitarian organizations and a small group of American lawmakersthat an attack on the key aid harbor could spark a full-blown famine and endanger millions of lives. Win Without War wrote on Twitter that the attack on Hodeida is “a dark moment of shame for the United States. We could have stopped this.”

Paulette Jordan May Become the First Native American Governor In US History: Here’s Her Story

Paulette Jordan is hoping to achieve an extraordinary electoral feat in a deeply conservative state that would make her a string of firsts: She would be the first Native American governor in the history of the US, the first woman governor of Idaho, and the first Democrat to be elected to lead the state in a generation. But for all of those potential distinctions should she be elected come November, Ms Jordan doesn’t seem to be all that interested in them. They’re nice, sure, but she says she has her sights set on bigger fish — like reaching out to voters across the Gem State with her message, and gaining their trust at a time of urgency for progressive causes nationwide.

Great News: In Praise of Afghans Walking for Peace

This past Friday in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, Hazara girls joined young Pashto boys to sing Afghanistan’s national anthem as a welcome to Pashto men walking 400 miles from Helmand to Kabul. The walkers are calling on warring parties in Afghanistan to end the war. Most of the men making the journey are wearing sandals. At rest stops, they must tend to their torn and blistered feet. But their mission grows stronger as they walk.
