Game of Thrones may have finally ended its eight-season run this May, which is a promising prospect for the land of television. Indeed, many networks and producers will be scrambling to find something to replace the show for its millions of viewers. The success of Game of Thrones comes from three factors – its period drama, its fantasy, and its array of characters. So, with this in mind, what could effectively replace Game of Thrones and be our next TV sensation?

Vikings
To satiate those who watched Game of Thrones as a period drama – the medieval setting, the knights and feudal system, and lack of technology – Vikings could be the replacement. Airing since 2013, the show has gained a cult following, but could absorb some of the viewers from Game of Thrones to cement the show as the next big thing (plus there are 69 episodes to binge on). Indeed, the show is extremely successful in its own right – having even scored a win with online casino providers. Yes, Vikings is available as a video slot game produced by prolific games providers such as NetEnt and takes advantage of the latest in gaming software and functionality, showing that the show has enough power to have a push towards fans and become the next Game of Thrones hit.
His Dark Materials
Not yet aired, but ready and waiting to absorb fans of the fantasy elements of Game of Thrones is the adaptation of the Philip Pullman novel series His Dark Materials. The 2007 adaptation, The Golden Compass, fared terribly in cinemas, so the production went back to the drawing board to not tone down any of the elements of the book series. Indeed, viewers have proven since then that they love to feel confused and have something to chew over, so perhaps the TV adaptation will fare better. Fans will be clawing at something fantastical to get behind and after the dragons and white walkers of Game of Thrones, the world of Philip Pullman could be just what the TV doctor ordered.

American Horror Story
While tonally different from Game of Thrones, American Horror Story can fill in for the many characters, many story threads and arcs element of the show. The show will enter its ninth season – and while the cast may feature stalwarts and regulars, each season is a different chapter of the anthology, meaning its full of different characters, a different premise, different universe laws and rules and different stories. So, if a show was to come and take over the mantle for being filled with characters, shock deaths, and high-stakes drama, American Horror Story would fit the bill. Later in 2019, we’ll see the ninth season air, titled 1984 and set in a summer camp.
Game of Thrones may have been the most expansive TV show in history and will not fade from our memories even after someone takes their spot on the Iron Throne. But, avid viewers will always be looking for the next big thing in entertainment, so it's no surprise that productions are angling for that title already. Whether the next Game of Thrones is Vikings, however, remains to be seen. Click here to get your own packages today!
