One of the best things about fashion, is that trends often come back when people least expect them. Remember those scrunchies everybody was wearing in the 90s? Well, you better start searching for them, because they are coming back this year and, along with them, so do shoulder pads, neon colors and fringe. Continue reading to discover what are the vintage trends that are making a huge comeback this year and prepare to call your mom to let you raid her closet, because vintage is the new future.
Tie-Dye
Up until recently tie-dye was labeled as a cute little DIY project, or a reminiscence of the ’70 hippie trends, but nothing more. But that was only until celebrities such as Beyoncé and Dree Hemingway chose to showcase their tie-dye outfits either on the beach or on the red carpet. Last season, Stella McCartney, Prada and Proenza Schouler transformed into a huge catwalk trend and clothing stores all around the world have chosen to follow them.
While the fashion influencers’ favorite seems to be the surfer girl T-shirts, that is not the only way you can choose to wear tie-dye this summer. Proenza Schouler applied it on denim, Prada chose mini dresses and Stella McCartney went for overalls. The luxury touch? Couture fabrics, such as duchess satin, to give it a royalty feeling.
Bold Shoulders
Strong shoulders, a favorite of the ‘80s are finding their way on the runway again this year and Balenciaga seems to lead the competition. Demna Gvasalia, creative director for Balenciaga, who made sure to include bold shoulders in the fall-winter 2019 show, stays he took his inspiration from the streetstyle of Parisian women.
Other fashion houses took the trend back to the far past, with Givenchy taking inspiration from the ‘40s grandmother coats and Rick Owens turning to the 1927 film “Metropolis” to draw his ideas. In the meantime, Fendi kept it more casual, alongside tall collars and knotted bows.
Fashion influencers seem to be enjoying this trend and are taking it to the streets in a quite unusual combination, with another favorite on this list – the cycling shorts.
Hair Ties with a Twist
Hair accessories have turned into quite the hip trend this year and you can see them everywhere. From scrunchies to big bows and barrettes, make sure to include one in your outfits. The best thing about this trend is that it is 100% DIY. If you don’t want to buy an expensive one, simply search the house and you’ll most definitely find some pieces of ribbon you can use. From designer package, form gist and even your printed wedding ribbon. Everything works!
Bonus: If you get tired of using them in your hair, they can double up quite nicely as chokers, to accessorize a simple outfit, or you can tie them around the neck of a button-down shirt to transform it into a bow.
Leopard Dress
Animal print, and especially leopard print, seems to make a comeback every few years, but in 2019, it’s all about leopard sleek slips. Popularized by the ‘90s grunge, the leopard slip dress is all designers talk about this spring and summer. The best thing about this trend? It works for every style. Pair it with some boots and a leather jacket for a grunge look, some high heels for a sexy touch or a white t-shirt and some Converse for a youthful vibe.
If you want to go bolder, try some neon colored animal print pieces, such as the ones form Emporio Armani and Off-White. Fashion experts say that leopard is such a favorite, that is soon going to be labeled as neutral.
If you’re not into dresses and would like to add your own touch to the trend, try the leopard slip dress, another favorite of this year. You can wear it with literally anything, from shirts to turtlenecks, t-shirts and sweaters.
Cycling Shorts
The star of the streets is, for sure, the cycling shorts. They have made their first apparition last year, but in 2019, they won everyone’s heart. Paired with XXL shirts, structured blazers, heels, trainers, just let your imagination roam free and play with their versatility.
The cycling shorts were a big thing in the ‘90s (even Princess Diana wore them) and they seem to become a big thing this year too. Up-market designers, such as Dior, Fendi, Chanel and Nanushka are all taking their twist on this trend. Neon, black, even animal print, the sky's the limit with this trend and influencers and celebrities are the best to show you this. However, the 90s sportswear vibe seems to be the market’s favorite.
Neon
Another trend that hit the fashion world last year, neon is here and it’s planning to stay, according to fashion experts. Celebrities seem to love this trend and, if you are looking for a simple way to play it safe, go for the streetstyle look, with denim and some sports shoes. Want to go a little bit over the top? Try an all-neon pantsuit, lithe the ones from House of Holland and Emporio Armani.
Designers have thought of everything and this year, they are trying to put a more sophisticated twist on the fluorescent trend and transforming it into something evening-appropriate, just like the gowns from Emilia Wickstead.
Worry not, neon is going to be present on the beach as well, with flowy dresses from Cushnie and Marta Jakubowski’s lace hats.
Fringe
Fringe is going to be everywhere this year and designers know it. Adding fringe to an outfit emphasizes movement and transforms everything into a sensorial experience for you. This year, you can expect to see all kinds of fringe hitting the streets. From hippie looks, to classic dresses and leather jackets, everything seems to be turning fringe-y.
The favorite of the crowd seems to be Gucci’s screamingly blue dress, made entirely out of fringe and paired with some pops of red underneath. If you want to tone it down a bit, go for some Oscar de la Renta.
