We needn’t be optimists to disarm despair. Optimism suggests confidence of positive outcomes, but, fortunately, humans don’t require certainty in order to act. If we believe something is essential—as in fixing our broken democracy and confronting the climate crisis—we’ve shown over and over throughout our long history that we can indeed do whatever it takes. #courage

As internet freedom supporters in the Senate attempt to force a vote to reverse the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) unpopular repeal of net neutrality rules, dozens of prominent websites went on “red alert” in support of the protections on Wednesday, hoping to prompt users to flood lawmakers’ offices with phone calls, emails, and other messages pressuring them to reinstate net neutrality.

A district judge in ruled that 13 fossil fuel pipeline protesters were not responsible for any infraction because of the necessity of their actions. “This may be a first in America,” tweeted Bill McKibben. The charges the defendants faced stemmed from actions they took in 2016 to block Spectra Energy’s fracked gas West Roxbury Lateral Pipeline.

Across the world, those who never had the luxury of complacency continued their struggles for participatory democracy; economic justice; an end to wars and violence; protection of the global commons; the rights and security of women, LGBTQ folk, and other excluded populations; and an end to theft and plunder of indigenous and small-farmer lands.
