The One Fear You Have To Overcome To Find Your True Path To Freedom

A few years back, I hated the word “commitment.” It felt heavy and ugly. In fact, to me, it seemed like a dirtier word than many that start with an “F.” These days, I see the same tendency in many of my life coach clients, and my most spiritually-inclined friends. So I think it’s time to give commitment a little positive PR in the hopes of making it more attractive and user-friendly. Because if you want to be truly free, in the most spiritual and mature way, then you need to get over your commitment-phobia (believe it or not there is no nice latin-based word for this all-too-common affliction).

First of all, I want to point out that many people talk about commitment as if it is one thing, but really it’s many things, depending on what you’re committing to. For instance, if I commit to doing yoga every day, that’s (generally) a good commitment. But if, on the other hand, I commit to eating three hot fudge sundaes every day, that’s (generally) not a good commitment. The former will probably lead to more freedom of body and spirit, and the latter will probably cause a lot of weight gain and a sundry of ailments from diabetes to clogged arteries.

Since commitment-phobes tend to think of all commitment as bad. For this discussion, I’m going to separate the “good” from the “bad” and only talk about commitment to something that is good for your mind, body and/or soul. These kinds of commitments lead to true freedom. That is not a typo, I did indeed write that commitment leads to freedom; true freedom.

So then what is true freedom?

It’s not always easy to define, but I can definitely tell you what it is not.

True freedom is not the process of running away from anything. Many people spend their lives avoiding commitment and responsibility in the name of what they call “freedom.” But it’s not freedom they’re tapping into, as much as a fear of whatever it is they are unwilling to commit to. Anytime you are running away from something, that running is based at least partially in fear.

True freedom – both inside and out – is based on a solid foundation. From that strong place, you can move anywhere; not as a reaction, but as a pro-active choice.

I totally understand why many people feel that making commitments – even good ones — limits their freedom, because it can, and sometimes does. But what’s more important and what most people don’t understand is that commitment can actually lead to freedom. That’s right. The most authentic kind of freedom comes from commitment. It is birthed out of commitment.

Commitment is like the rock in the image above. Committing to something in a solid way, creates the kind of freedom the climber in the photo feels. He wouldn’t get to experience that freedom without his commitment to good training as well as to the rocks and ropes that give him his foundation and safety.

One of my favorite analogies for understanding the commitment-freedom relationship is to think of a big, strong, resplendent tree. It has a lot of freedom at the top where it’s branches blow and move in the breeze. But that freedom and those dancing branches grow out of the tree’s roots, burrowed deep in the earth, fully committed.

The trees roots are actually the source of the freedom. In fact, the more roots and grounding a tree has, the taller — and more free — it can be. The same is true of a tall building. In the best case scenario, I believe this is the way we humans can use commitment – to find our most authentic and widest reach. And I don’t know if there is any freedom that is more expansive than our ability to be our full, magnificent selves.

When it comes to our energy systems, we humans are actually a lot like trees. We need roots and grounding. Without them, we feel lost, alone and/or lacking purpose. With them, we can spread our wings – that is, develop our authentic freedom — and still know we have a safe place to land.

Both commitment and freedom are important. They actually represent the full expanse of our chakras. Commitment is based in our (lowest) root chakra and freedom is based in our (highest) crown chakra. When we experience both, and stop seeing them as a trade off for one another, then we get to live in our full energetic field and personal power.

If you’re a recovering commitment-phobe, do a little exercise this week. Make a few little commitments and keep them. Making and keeping some small, positive commitments, will give you a sense of accomplishment and self-mastery that will make you more and more enthusiastic about committing to commitment. That’s how I grew into a commitment-lover and a first chakra gal.

Well, that, and getting a real first chakra tattoo.

If you know my personal story, then you know that I actually grew my commitment enough to get a permanent first chakra tattoo on my tailbone area. So much freedom and authenticity have grown out of me making that one big commitment. But getting a real tattoo is a really, really big (hard to reverse) commitment, so if you want to experience wearing a root chakra tattoo, perhaps you should start with my temporary Chakra Boosters Healing Tattoos™ and get my Root Chakra Booster Healing Tattoo™.

Ironically, although it’s temporary, it will boost your ability to commit to other things in your life.

May you have a week of awesome commitments!

Lots of love and oodles of well wishes,

Ode to Mother Earth (Root Chakra Healing Song)

Today, on Earth day, I want to share this beautiful song that is an Ode to Mother Earth. And, it’s also a healing song for the first chakra. Below are the lyrics so you can get even more benefit by singing along. Note that in Sanskrit, “muladhara” means “root lock” (our chakra connection to Mother Earth). “Shree” and “swaha” are forms of salutation and celebration.

Boost Your Root Chakra With This Simple Yoga Pose

Video Source: chakraboosters

You probably already know that yoga is good for you and that it’s enjoyable and relaxing, but did you know it can positively affect every area of your life? It can. Specific yoga poses are directly related to your body’s energy centers known as your chakras. These chakras affect every aspect of your life. So this means for instance, that doing first chakra poses can affect your finances, doing second chakra poses can affect your sex life, doing third chakra poses can affect your personal power and confidence, and so on.

As a sort of intro to summer and more outdoor activity, I’ve filmed a short series of easy yoga poses and corresponding movements that relate to each chakra and I’m going to share them sequentially with you from the ground to the crown. If you follow this series, by the end of it, you’ll be able to do a short morning ritual of seven movements that will balance all your chakras. It’s a great way to start your day!

In this post, I’m focusing on the root chakra. It governs your tailbone, feet and legs and it’s related to the color red. Red is a dense, slow vibrating color so this is your deepest, most earth bound chakra. It’s all about your sense of survival and security and pertains to everything physical in your world. It’s connected to your personal boundaries as well as your health, work and money. It’s also related to your home and your “tribe” (that is, your extended family).

It’s all about apana energy – the energy that goes downward, so it’s related to your sense of being grounded and physically present in your body. The pose that I demonstrate here is squat pose. The Sanskrit yoga term for it is malasana (meaning “garland”), but I think squat works just fine.

To do it right, you want to separate your feet hip-distance or a little wider, and squat down. Then, to keep the pose from becoming too passive, push down into the fore corners of your feet (big toe mound, pinky toe mound, inner heel, outer heel) and lift your toes. This ignites your leg muscles and creates something called “muscular energy.” Muscular energy is the bodily energy that is related to boosting your first chakra. It’s simply the action of pulling your muscles inward to create more solidity and strength.

The root chakra is a masculine, contractive chakra, so women usually need to practice muscular energy more than men for overall balance (in the same way that men tend to need more stretching than women).

The first chakra is the home of the Divine Masculine. Practice it if you want more security, strength and all forms of stability (including financial) in your life. Here’s a little music video of my first chakra song. Play it while you practice this pose and boost your root chakra even more.

In the next video and post, I’ll introduce a pose for the second chakra, the home of the Divine Feminine.

3 Easy Ways To Balance Your Chakras with Sound

Video Source: chakraboosters

My music video “Muladhara” repeats the Sanskrit name of the root chakra for grounding and prosperity.

I love chakra healing. My whole life changed for the better when I became aware of Dr. Emoto’s “Words OnWater” research and created my Chakra Boosters Healing Tattoos™. They’re an excellent visual and energetic way to boost and balance your chakras, and they work really well on their own. Still, I find that when it comes to chakra healing, you can boost the effect by mixing modalities. So if you choose to wear my temporary tattoos, gaze at a yantra, or focus on a particular chakra color, you may also want to add a form of chakra sound healing as well.

There are many ways you can use sound to heal and balance your your chakras. Today, I’m going to cover the three most basic ways.

1. Say the Names of the Chakras

The easiest option is to just say the Sanskrit name of each chakra. The name of each chakra carries its energy. Here are the Sanskrit chakra names and their meanings (as well as my best attempt to give you the phonetics in layman’s language):

First (root) – Muladhara – (moo-lah-dar-ah) – root support

Second (sacral) – Svadisthana (svah-dee-stahn-uh)– one’s own place

Third (solar plexus) – Manipura – (mon-ee-poer-uh) – lustrous gem

Fourth (heart) – Anahata – (on-uh-hat-uh) – unstruck sound

Fifth (throat) – Vissudha – (vis-shoe-duh) – purity

Sixth (brow) – Ajna – (ah-juh-na) – command

Seventh (crown) – Sahasrara (sah-has-rah-rah) – thousand-spoked

Mindy Arbuckle does this great one-minute video where she (mostly) correctly pronounces all of the names of the chakras (note: the 6th chakra is a little off, so you might want to look at other youtube videos for that one).

2. Chant the Seed Sound for Each Chakra

First (root) – Lam

Second (sacral) – Vam

Third (solar plexus) – Ram

Fourth (heart) – Yam

Fifth (throat) – Ham

Sixth (brow) – Om

Seventh (crown) – Silence

Yogi performer, MC Yogi, does a fun beatbox version of these sounds.

3. Sing or Listen to the Musical Note Associated with Each Chakra

This is simple enough, since it’s basically the musical scale, starting at C:

First (root) – C

Second (sacral) – D

Third (solar plexus) – E

Fourth (heart) – F

Fifth (throat) – G

Sixth (brow) – A

Seventh (crown) – B

Sound Essence has a lovely diagram on their home page that let’s you “play” the notes on the figure of a body. Click here to play (beware it can be surprisingly addicting).

In my “Chakra Love” healing album, my musical partner, Jeff Bonilla and I combined all of these techniques at once for a super powerful effect. We also added Sanskrit mantras and english lyrics that share what each chakra is about. Here are some sample lyrics for a few of the chakras (to go to a page to hear samples of each song, CLICK HERE).

4th Chakra Healing Song — “The heart is the bridge between body and soul…”

5th Chakra Healing Song — “I can SPEAK my truth…”

While creating the album, we had a blast playing with the words, sounds and elements of the chakras, so we included one short “making of” track for each song, so you can be aware of how the song came to be and what elements in it are healing. It’s quite comical at times, as we found ourselves delving into crazy questions like, “What does earth sound like?” and “Does that chord feel like fire?”

You can ask these same kinds of questions in your life to create more sound healing in every moment.

Heal Yourself Now: The Best Healing Method For Each Chakra

There are literally thousands of ways you can “heal” and “balance” your chakras. Meditation and visualization are both very popular choices, sound is another good method, sight is yet another (using yantras or mandalas), and smell works really well too – it’s called aromatherapy. Yoga is another very popular way to work on your chakras, and I could go on as the list is too long to recite.

But do each of these modalities work equally well? The answer is yes, and no. Or the proverbial, “it depends.”

First of all, I think it’s important to realize that each healing modality is actually more closely associated with each one of the chakras. This means that one method may work better for a particular chakra than another.
Let me explain.

The 6th and 7th chakras balance well with visualization and meditation and pure energy work, because they are in the higher frequency realm. The seventh chakra isn’t even truly “physical” – it’s our spiritual connection to everything. It resides off the body, above the crown of our head. The sixth chakra is at the third eye – in the middle of the forehead – and it is the least “physical” of the sixth bodily-related chakras.

A Quick Intro to Your Chakras

Think of your six bodily chakras stacked up like a sort of pyramid – with the lowest one, your first chakra creating the wide and heavy base of the pyramid, and the highest one in your body, your sixth chakra, representing the highest tip of the pyramid. It’s light and airy and easily mutable, while the first chakra is dense and heavy and more difficult to change (in fact, the first chakra represents and strengthens stability, so it’s very nature is the opposite of change).

Each chakra also relates to a sense and an element, like this:

 • First chakra = smell/earth
 • Second chakra = taste/water
 • Third chakra = sight/fire
 • Fourth chakra = touch/air
 • Fifth chakra = hearing/sound
 • Sixth chakra = “sixth sense”/light
 • Seventh chakra is off the body and unrelated to the sensory world, so it has no associations, except to pure consciousness.

To learn much more about your chakras, see this in-depth article I wrote and this fabulous chart I created.

Best Healing Method for Your First Chakra

crystals-chakra-healing-stonesSo, for the first chakra, the best, long term healing comes from very physical activities – like hatha yoga, because the first chakra is the most dense and most related to the physical body. Smell-oriented treatments, like aromatherapy, work well too because this chakra is related to your sense of smell. Gemstones (pictured) are great for first chakra healing as well, because stones are from the earth, the element of this chakra. Gardening is also really good for healing your first chakra (see the above video)

Best Healing Method for Your Second Chakra

For the second chakra – which is still very dense and physical – hatha yoga is good – especially tantrically-oriented yoga and hip poses (see the above video). Healing with chakra foods (juicy, orange foods like oranges, mangoes & pumpkins) is good for this chakra since it’s related to taste, and doing aquatic bodywork – like watsu (pictured) – is really good too, because the second chakra is related to the water element.

Best Healing Method for Your Third Chakra

For the third chakra – Visual therapy like working with yantras is very good here, as are my Tranformation Power Questions and Byron Katie’s “The Work,” because our conscious, mental reasoning ability and our self-image are both associated with the third chakra. Sun bathing is good, because the third chakra is related to the fire element, and it’s located in the solar plexus.
And if you’re up for it, fire walking will stoke your third chakra in a major way. Any method that builds confidence is good for the 3rd chakra too. Some folks thing affirmations do this, but I disagree. I avoid affirmations (because they often invite your subconscious mind to respond negatively), and use Transformational Power Questions (empowering questions) instead. Here’s how and why to do TPQs. Finally, any kind of actual core work — like power yoga — or breathing that stokes your core — like yoga’s “breath of fire”, are really good for your solar plexus chakra.

Best Healing Method for Your Fourth Chakra

For the fourth chakra – the bridge between the lower (more “physical” chakras) and the upper (more “spiritual” chakras), touch is good. Studies show that babies thrive when nurses and nanny’s hold them, and so do adults. Humans need hugging. Hugging –even self-hugging (do it now!) is one of the simplest ways to boost and balance heart chakra energy. EFT – the process of tapping – is great for this chakra too, as is all forms of breath work, because we breath in and out of this chakra and the element here is air.

Best Healing Method for Your Fifth Chakra

For the fifth chakra – sound healing takes the cake. You can use this technique two simple ways – putting sound out, in the form of mantras, chanting, and seed sounds (or even just singing a favorite song that makes you feel good) and taking sound in, in the form of crystal bowls, mantras or again, a favorite song.

The seed sounds (shortest mantras) for each of the chakras are:

 • 1st – Lam
 • 2nd – Vam
 • 3rd – Ram
 • 4th – Yam
 • 5th – Ham
 • 6th – Om
 • 7th – Silence (again, pure consciousness

Best Healing Method for Your Sixth Chakra

For the sixth chakra – visualization is the best tool, since our third eye is ground zero for all our dreams and visualizations. You can do this inwardly or outwardly, and I recommend both. Meditations are the best way to do inward visualizing. Just close your eyes and create a positive world within you. See and feel what you truly want and as you do this, you change your whole physiology in a way that causes you to interact more positively and confidently with your external world (and thereby change it). You can also visualize externally by creating an Amazing Vision Board. I created an awesome 4-video series that walks you through the process of creating a sacred vision board that will ignite your creative energy in a major way and take your life to the next level. You can access the series here:

Best Healing Method for Your Seventh Chakra

For the seventh chakra, meditation – pure, silent, thoughtless openness is the best. Just opening to the space that we are, with nothing added.

Now, this is not to say that meditating won’t help the first chakra, it can. But we’re talking about a super subtle technique being used on a super dense chakra (kind of like “hammering” a nail with a pencil).

It may cause a shift in the energy field of the first chakra, but for it to stay for good, lots of repetition and consistency (both qualities of the first chakra) are needed. Getting into the actual body – tissues and bones – works much better for creating long-term, positive, first chakra shifts.

And conversely, for the sixth or seventh chakras to be greatly affected by something as physical as hatha yoga, you need to make sure you’re paying equal attention to your subtle energies while doing your physical practice.

It’s a trade off.

For Best Results…

My general suggestion is this: try lots of different modalities so all your chakras can be affected positively by their most compatible modality.

Be aware that you will tend to avoid the modality you need the most.

Here’s why… If you need more first chakra energy (more earth energy), then you tend to “live” more in your upper chakras, which means you are not deeply inhabiting your body. It also means that you like to float around, not being consistent, and not committing to things.

Unfortunately, the way to balance and “heal” such an issue is to do what you don’t want to do – go into the body with yoga or conscious bodywork — and commit to going in there deeply and consistently.

So another rule of thumb is don’t just do what you like to do. A popular new age adage is “Do what you love.” While that’s certainly good some of the time, it’s not good all of the time. More of the same cannot create positive change. If you want things to change, you need to change the things you do.

The general rule of thumb is: Use more meditative-type techniques for the upper chakras, and do more physically-oriented techniques to best effect the lower chakras.

7 Ways To Fulfill The Need of Your Root Chakra (& Stop Living from Fear)

This is the first video in a series I’ve created for you where we will be journeying through the needs of your chakras one at a time. As humans, we have all sorts of needs – physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual. In fact, we have one major need in each of our chakras. As we meet these important needs, we naturally feel more fulfilled.

Unfortunately, if we’re not consciously aware of our basic chakra needs and are not fulfilling them, our subconscious will try to fulfill them in ways that may be counterproductive to what we consciously want.

We may find ourselves engaging in irrational behavior or in some way, sabotaging our conscious desires. So it’s wise to know your basic needs as a human and to seek to fulfill them on a conscious level.

In this series, I share the basic need of each chakra and simple ways you can fulfill that need. In this article, we’re looking at the basic need of your first (root) chakra which is certainty and safety.

Think about the real reason a horror film scares you. It isn’t because of the cheesy monster or all the fake blood. Rather, it’s because of the unknown. You don’t know when the madman will jump out or when a claw may reach out. And that is scary!

We humans need to feel safe and have a certain degree of certainty and safety in our lives. That’s why so many people make decisions out of fear. We take jobs we don’t like, because we’re afraid that without them, we won’t be able to pay the rent. We stay in so-so (or sometimes miserable) relationships because we’re afraid nobody else will want us, and we decline offers to go sky diving or rock climbing because we’re afraid we’ll fall to our death.

As a race, we strive to stay safe and secure, and this is a good, healthy drive — if we stay aware of it and balance it with our other basic needs. So how do you fulfill your need for certainty? Here are my suggestions:

7 Simple Ways To Create A Sense of Certainty In Your Life

1) Wear my 1st chakra healing tattoo. When I got a real 1st chakra tattoo, a lifetime of fear and anxiety left my body. I created my Chakra Boosters Healing Tattoos™ so others could experience the same thing. They affect the water in your body in a positive way and make you feel more grounded. This story better explains their origin.

2) Do grounding exercises. Whenever we connect more deeply with mother earth, we feel more safe and certain. Close your eyes and turn within. Imagine roots growing from your tailbone down to the core of the earth and anchoring you to it. Then imagine inhaling up from the roots to your tailbone and exhaling back down to the core of the earth. Do this for a few minutes until you feel a sense of security and grounding.

3) Walk barefoot and participate in a practice called earthing. Where as in the previous exercise you were just visualizing connecting to mother earth, in this one, you’re actually doing it.

4) Create a more regular routine. The more you can stick to a regular routine, the more your natural sense of certainty rises. This is because you (and your subconscious mind and body) literally know what’s coming.

5) Have a touchstone. May people feel better when they have an object that they can touch. Objects – especially ones you can carry with you like an actually pocket-sized stone – are always there for you. You can count on them being there. This increases your sense of certainty.

6) Listen to and watch my First Chakra Song Music Video.

7) Choose friends who are reliable and don’t try to rely on those who are not. We all know that certain people are more reliable than others. Don’t reduce your certainty by depending on undependable people. You know the type. You can be friends with them, but don’t count on them. They don’t even count on themselves!

There you go. Seven ways to better fill your need for certainty. I hope you will jump into them this week and make sure that your first chakra’s need for certainty is fulfilled. Next up, we’ll look at the need of your second (sacral) chakra. Care to guess what it is?

3 Tips to Heal Your Heart on 9/11 (& What NOT To Do!)

I awoke today with a shaky feeling in my heart. You see, I’m an empath and I feel the collective energy, and today is the day that the entire world will never forget. The date 9/11 will forever be etched in our collective heart, and though we certainly react to it with less intensity now than we did in the first anniversary after the event, there is still a big charge.

In fact, from my bodily gauge, it feels as if the collective emotional intensity waned as much as it could a couple years ago, and is now growing a bit again. Maybe it’s the world economy and the tension and wars everywhere, or maybe I’m just getting more sensitive. In any case, there is still energy to be healed around this date, so in that way, 9/11 offers us all a gift; an opportunity to face our fears and to grow beyond them.

So, the question is not whether we’ll remember 9/11, but how we’ll remember it. Will we focus on concepts like loss, fear, “enemy”? Or will we focus on growth, love and connection?

In every moment, we create our reality by what experiences we focus on, what we make those experiences mean, and how we choose to act on them.

Today, I invite you to choose to focus on the good, and make 9/11 mean the future is full of positive possibility. I also invite you to take some actions that heal your heart and the heart of others – actions that bolster your belief in humanity. I have three suggestions of what you can do to heal, but first, let me mention three things you DON’T want to do today:

1. Don’t Watch Old Footage of 9/11. You have enough “reels” in your memory; no need to make your body go through the trauma again.

2. Don’t Blame Anybody for the Event. Blame is a fear-induced (and fear-inducing) exercise.

3. Don’t Stay Isolated & Alone. Healing comes from heart connection with others. When we connect lovingly, we heal and are healed at the same time. It’s a win-win.

And here are the three things you DO want to do:

1. Ground Yourself – your root chakra, which is located in your tailbone, legs and feet, holds your sense of safety and security. Bolster it today with this Root Chakra Healing Song from my album “Chakra Love”:

Other things that can build your root chakra energy are hiking, gardening, pottery, drumming or walking barefoot. Another great way to ground is to meditate and imagine your tailbone is growing roots that reach down, down, down into the core of the earth, making you feel anchored and safe. Inhale energy up from the core of the earth and then back down into the core of the earth in a continual loop for as long as you’d like.

2. Focus on Strengthening & Expanding Your Heart Energy – After you feel grounded, you can them open your heart chakra. You can do so really easily by simply focusing inward and imagining the energy in your heart glowing green and growing bigger and brighter. You can also listen to (and sing along with) my Heart Chakra Healing Song from Chakra Love (get your free download here). Once you’ve done some activities like this and you’re feeling a bit stronger in your heart, do this Ho’Oponopono meditation:

As you do it, send love to your fear or to anyone you feel frightened of. The words you say in the meditation are quite simple, but magical: “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.” I know it seems counter intuitive to ask your fear for forgiveness, but please just try it. It helps. The heart has it’s own logic that is completely different than the mind’s.

3. Connect with Others More – Once you’ve done one and two above and you’re feeling stronger, safer and more open, make it your
mini-mission to reach out to others today (and perhaps the rest of this week or the rest of your life!). Hug more, smile more, help more. Call or skype loved ones who are far away and tell them how much you love and appreciate them. Smile at strangers. Put a few coins in somebody else’s meter. Find little, loving ways to connect with everyone around you.

Thank you for taking these little, powerful actions. When you start by healing yourself, you give a gift to the world, because our planet is nothing more than the sum of each of our individual energies. Each time one of us adds to the loving, healing energy on the planet, a small, positive shift occurs. And when our collective shifts reach critical mass, our entire paradigm and way of living will expand into a higher, more peaceful and mutually-respectful order. We are the creators. Let us choose love over fear again and again.

I wish for you a strong and open heart, and deep, satisfying healing.
