New Evidence of How and When the Milky Way Came Together

New research provides the best evidence to date into the timing of how our early Milky Way came together, including the merger with a key satellite galaxy. Using relatively new methods in astronomy, the researchers were able to identify the most precise ages currently possible for a sample of about a hundred red giant stars in the galaxy. #milkyway #GaiaEnceladus

Astronomers Release New All-Sky Map of Milky Way’s Outer Reaches

The highlight of the new chart is a wake of stars, stirred up by a small galaxy set to collide with the Milky Way. The map could also offer a new test of dark matter theories. #MilkyWay

ESO Telescope Spots Galaxies Trapped In The Web of a Supermassive Black Hole

Astronomers have found six galaxies lying around a supermassive black hole when the Universe was less than a billion years old. This is the first time such a close grouping has been seen so soon after the Big Bang and the finding helps us better understand how supermassive black holes formed and grew so quickly. It supports the theory that black holes can grow rapidly within large structures which contain plenty of gas to fuel them. #blackholes

Mystery Object Outshines Entire Milky Way Galaxy by 50 Times –“We Don’t Know What the Power Source Could Be”

In June of 2015, astronomers viewed a ball of hot gas billions of light years away that is radiating the energy of hundreds of billions of suns. At its heart is an object a little larger than 10 miles across. ASAS-SN-15lh, as the object is known, is twice as luminous as anything previously seen, far brighter than any normal supernova, and outshines our entire Milky Way galaxy by 50 times.

Are We Alone In The Universe? Setting Some Limits To Our Uniqueness

A new paper shows that the recent discoveries of exoplanets combined with a broader approach makes it possible to assign a new probability as to whether any other advanced technological civilizations have ever existed.
