Watch How this Incredible Public Food Park Feeds 200,000 a Month

MIKE BARRETT | Naturalsociety | Jan 12th 2015

farmIt is becoming more apparent that we need to begin reclaiming our food supply through small-scale, wide-spread farming practices. We can no longer rely on Big Food to supply us with the nutritious food we need, and we certainly can’t rely on mega chemical companies like Monsanto to feed us with their genetically modified creations. This is why countless communities are embracing the giving art of local farms and supporting local food businesses. One Incredible Edible park in Irvine, California, formerly 7.5 acres of wasted space, is now an edible park that feeds 200,000 people every month!

It’s time that we each learn how to hoe a row, plant seeds at the most optimum time, and how to fix a broken-down tractor. As our elders pass this information to younger generations, we are ensuring that our food sovereignty continues. Indeed, small-scale, diversified farming is seeing a resurgence it hasn’t experienced for a long time, with often surprising participants.

Just imagine raising a vegetable garden right in front of your local police station, and not a single officer inquires about what you are doing. Or, plucking a few cherries from outside your doctors’ office before you go in for an annual check-up. How about harvesting some apples and pears from along a canal path?

There are over 70 community gardens scattered around Todmorden, West Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, and the residents there are encouraged to take fresh fruit and vegetables as they are inclined.

Check out the video below to see how a public food park can feed so many people.

Will Medical Marijuana Soon Be Legalized Nationwide?

by Mike Barrett | NaturalSociety.com

How  long will it be until the United States government recognizes cannabis as a medicinal, useful plant, and not just an abused drug? You’d be interested to know that states aren’t the only ones accepting cannabis in various forms – the  U.S. government is actually closer than ever to legalizing the plant. In fact, a group of bipartisan legislators have recently made an effort to propel medical marijuana to the top, legalizing the plant for medicinal purposes and protecting those working with it from federal consequences.

The proposal puts into effect the Obama Administration’s ‘hands-off approach’ to medical marijuana to a new level by completely protecting states partaking in medical marijuana from any federal prosecution.

As reported by HighTimes:

“The proposed legislation, aptly entitled the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act, would ‘allow patients, doctors and businesses in states that have already passed medical marijuana laws to participate in those programs without fear of federal prosecution,’ according to a press release issued by the lawmakers. The bill would also downgrade the DEA’s current Schedule I classification to a Schedule II.”

The bill showcases 5 key points, according to individuals familiar with the bill:

  • Marijuana would no longer be considered a ‘Schedule I’ drug with ‘no medicinal value.’ As of now, marijuana is grouped with heroin, ecstasy, and LSD – all of which are considered to have no medicinal value. The bill would lower marijuana to a ‘Schedule II’ group, which are drugs that are still dangerous and likely to be abused, but do have medicinal use.
  • It would become easier to transport marijuana between states.
  • Banks would more easily be able to provide services for those working with medical marijuana.
  • The bill would open more doors expanding the possibilities in marijuana research, which would come from a National Institute on Drug Abuse reform.
  • Doctors working for the Department of Veterans Affairs in states where medical marijuana is legal would be able to recommend it for certain conditions.

Read: Key Marijuana Case may Lead to Nationwide Reclassification

Although most recent history tells us that we are ever-so-close to passing such a national bill, it is difficult to say whether we’re at the point of making this nationwide stride in marijuana development. But either way, the bill will stir up some much needed discussion on the topic of nationwide pot reform, leading to leading to what will eventually be nationwide legalization.

With 23 states legalizing medical marijuana, and Colorado and Washington legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes, there is no doubt that we’ll see even more states pass similar bills in 2015. The movement seems to have gained enough momentum to ride to the end.

If passed, the proposal would be the most significant level of marijuana reform in the United States since prohibition.

Turmeric Compound May Fight Root Cause Behind ‘Thousands of Diseases’

MIKE BARRETT | Naturalsociety | 12th Feb 2015

turmericIf the natural health world had any impact on you during 2014, it was probably the simple incorporation of health-boosting foods and spices. One of those foods everyone should have stockpiled is turmeric – a spice largely studied for its healing properties. But in case past research didn’t stick, a newly released study is here to show once again how turmeric and its active compound curcumin can inhibit what is considered a leading factor for the development of disease – inflammation.

Inflammation has actually been referred to as the ‘mother of most major chronic disease.’ It is a silent epidemic effecting millions of people, causing a wide range of ailments. To test for it, doctors use indirect methods by measuring blood levels of C-reactive protein, a pro-inflammatory marker, and homocysteine levels.

Dr. Barry Sears, author of The Anti-Inflammation Zone: Reversing the Silent Epidemic That’s Destroying Our Health states:

“Silent inflammation attacks the heart, arteries, and even the brain, and you will not even know it. Obesity is the primary cause of silent inflammation and excess body fat is causing today’s epidemic rise in countless health threats.”

How Turmeric can Help

Turmeric is quickly becoming a well known potent anti-inflammatory spice. It has been shown to aid in ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, kidney inflammation, eye inflammation, ulcerative colitis, and much more.

This recent study, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, concluded:

“Short-term supplementation with curcuminoid-piperine combination significantly improves oxidative and inflammatory status in patients with MetS. Curcuminoids could be regarded as natural, safe and effective CRP-lowering agents.”

The study’s senior author and researcher at the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran, Amirhossein Sahebkar, had this to say:

“Two key effects of curcumin that account for most of the therapeutic effects of this compound are its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The findings of our studies, along with clinical findings reported by other groups, indicate the usefulness of daily use of curcumin supplement for the prevention and treatment of several diseases.”

Noting that turmeric is safe, but should be generally avoided by pregnant or lactating women, Sahebkar continued:

“Curcumin is a very safe natural supplement, and there is no severe adverse event associated with its use, even at high doses.

“In addition, patients with malabsorption syndrome, gall bladder problems, gastric ulcer, bleeding problems as well as those who are undergoing surgery, and those who have a history of hypersensitivity to herbal products should be cautious and consult with their physician before taking this supplement.”

Though it is strongly suggested to use turmeric in daily cooking for its health benefits, it may not measure up to pure curcumin supplements. Still, here is how to optimize turmeric absorption in your daily life to see super-boosted benefits.

How Green Tea Can Destroy Oral Cancer Cells

MIKE BARRETT | Naturalsociety | Feb 10th 2015

GreenTeaCancer_m_1019A recent study carried out by Penn state food scientists has shed even more light on green tea’s anti-cancer effects, finding that a compound within the antioxidant-rich beverage may be capable of destroying oral cancer cells while leaving healthy cells completely unharmed.

The compound responsible for many of green tea’s benefits and one which is known to protect against cancer is known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The compound has been studied extensively for its ability to not only prevent and beat cancer, but also increase metabolism, protect the brain, and slow the aging process.

Though while EGCG has been shown in previous studies to kill these cancer cells, scientists weren’t quite sure why or how. The recent study helped bring them closer to understanding, suggesting that EGCG may trigger a process in the mitochondria that leads to cell death.

Joshua Lambert, associate professor of food science and co-director of Penn State’s Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health, said:

“EGCG is doing something to damage the mitochondria and that mitochondrial damage sets up a cycle causing more damage and it spirals out, until the cell undergoes programmed cell death. It looks like EGCG causes the formation of reactive oxygen species in cancer cells, which damages the mitochondria, and the mitochondria responds by making more reactive oxygen species.”

Over time, the mitochondria lose more of its defenses with a breakdown in the expression of antioxidant genes. In their weakened state, the cancer cells eventually succumb to EGCG in full, and they die.

“So, it’s turning off its mechanism of protection at the same time that EGCG is causing this oxidative stress,” Lambert added.

The researchers also note how a protein called sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) is critical to the process of mitochondrial function, which is affected by EGCG.

“It plays an important role in mitochondrial function and in anti-oxidant response in lots of tissues in the body, so the idea that EGCG might selectively affect the activity of sirtuin 3 in cancer cells — to turn it off — and in normal cells — to turn it on — is probably applicable in multiple kinds of cancers.”

Excitingly, the EGCG didn’t cause any harm to normal cells. In fact, it appeared to increase the protective capabilities of normal cells.

Since the research was done using petri dishes, the next step is to test on animals and humans, the researchers said. From there, they hope to make anti-cancer treatments without all of the harmful side effects caused by conventional treatments like chemotherapy.

“The problem with a lot of chemotherapy drugs — especially early chemotherapy drugs — is that they really just target rapidly dividing cells, so cancer divides rapidly, but so do cells in your hair follicles and cells in your intestines, so you have a lot of side effects,” said Lambert. “But you don’t see these sorts of side effects with green tea consumption.”

4 Must-Have Foods for Reducing Inflammation Naturally

 MIKE BARRETT | Naturalsociety

anti-inflammatory foodHealth news gives us the overriding impression that cancer, dementia, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes are things that simply happen to us. But this just isn’t true. While genes may play a role in our health quality, many experts agree that chronic inflammation causes virtually all leading diseases due to a poor diet and lack of exercise.

Deemed the mother of most major chronic disease, chronic inflammation is a silent epidemic; a plague afflicting millions of unsuspecting Americans. It is typically a silent  until actual tissue damage and loss of function occurs. There is no single direct test for inflammation. Instead, doctors use indirect methods by measuring blood levels of C-reactive protein, a pro-inflammatory marker, and homocysteine levels.

In light of this news, here are 4 foods that are must-haves for reducing inflammation naturally – and they come with numerous other benefits.

1. Tart Cherries

cherries_Tart_715_250

According to researchers with Oregon Health & Science University, tart cherries have the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food.” This is a remarkable statement considering all of the fruits and vegetables with anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties are also likely responsible for the many health benefits of cherries.

The researchers discovered that tart cherries, like Montmorency and Balaton in particular, are rich in phenolics and anthocyanins, more so than sweet cherry varieties like Bing, Lambert, and Rainier. These compounds are known to reduce inflammation considerably.

2. Onions

Antioxidant phytonutrients are what give onions their anti-inflammatory power. Compounds like quercetin and anthocyanin work to prevent the oxidation of fatty acids while reducing inflammation throughout the body.

Quercetin, according to Arthritis Today, has been shown to inhibit or stop leukotrines, histamines, and prostaglandins (inflammation causers) in both rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis.

Another Argentinian study on rats showed that both garlic and onions have the ability to reduce inflammation in animals that had developed insulin resistance after a steady diet of fructose.

3. Turmeric

Turmeric is a scientifically proven inflammation buster. A 2004 study published in the journal Oncogene found that curcumin (found in turmeric) was found to be an effective alternative to allopathic drugs as an anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agent against tumor cells. Be sure to buy the organic non-irradiated version of this healing spice.

4. Ginger

For many individuals, ginger can be just as effective as ibuprofen for arthritic pain relief, only without the nasty side-effects. It also relieves upset or queasy stomachs. The traditional way to prepare ginger is by making a tea from the roots. Buy the roots, shave of the skins, and slice up enough to cover the bottom of a medium sized pan. Fill with purified water and bring to a boil, then let it simmer for a half hour.

Man Builds 2 Earth Dome Cabins for Less than $10,000 (Pictures)

MIKE BARRETT | Naturalsociety | Jan 27th 2015

Dome CabinsAre you interested in exploring alternative means of sustainable living, but don’t think it can be done? Though not as common as it should be, many individuals choose to live off-the-grid and rely on themselves by collecting rainwater, planting gardens, using alternative energy, and more. People are even building their own little ‘Earth dome’ houses. Want to see what I’m talking about? Check out these pictures and video below.

Evolving from historic military bunker construction techniques, Earthbag building is a relatively inexpensive method of construction that uses limited resources at a low cost. The technique uses natural materials (usually local), such as sturdy stacks filled with inorganic material. Subsoil that contains enough clay to become cohesive when tamped, gravel, sand, or volcanic rock are common materials used for Earthbag building.

Construction starts with a trench to the subsoil and is followed by a filling with cobble stones or gravel. Bags or tubes filled with gravel can then be placed inside the trench to provide a water-resistant  foundation. Popular bags include Polypropylene (the ones used to transport for rice and other grains) due to low cost and resistance to water damage, rot, and insects.

Bags or tubing are placed on top of other bags or tubes to create the walls. To form a roof, bags are gradually slopped toward the center to form a dome-like structure. Upon completion, the walls can be rendered with either cement-based stucco, or lime or earthen plaster.

With the artistic glamour that these Earth domes provide, who wouldn’t want one of their own?

sustainable_earth_done_living_5_ca_700_368

While we continue to recover from the sub prime mortgage lending crisis created by the greed of central banks, people everywhere are looking for industrious ways to live without a mortgage at all, or at least afford housing in a more sustainable vein. This becomes even more true, on another level, when you learn that the government tries hard to disallow free, sustainable living.

One Florida woman has gone head to head with a local judge who has declared her efforts to live off the grid illegal and in violation of local and international code ordinances. Similarly, a Florida couple has had to challenge the state when they were told they would be fined $500 simply for having a vegetable garden on property they owned for over 20 years.

It might be time to rely a bit less on others, and more on ourselves.
