NBA Youngboy is an up-and-coming rapper out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With three albums on the Billboard charts within the same year, Kentrell Gaulden’s personal life has heavily influenced his lyrics and musical style.
Childhood
As a child, Kentrell was raised mostly by his grandmother after his father was sentenced to prison with a 55-year sentence. He was forced to wear a brace on his neck that led to scars on his forehead after sustaining an injury as a kid.
After dropping out of high school, Kentrell was arrested for robbery and sent to a juvenile detention facility. There he began writing lyrics for what would be his first mixtape, but upon being released his grandmother sadly passed away from a sudden heart failure.
With no family nearby, Kentrell started living with NBA 3Three and they stole in order to afford time in the recording studios.
Musical Career
If you were to look up NBA Youngboy, or Youngboy Never Broke Again as he later changed it, you’d find a surprising musical catalog. Between 2015 when he released his introductory mixtape and 2016, Youngboy put out an astounding 6 mixtapes. However, it was the back-and-forth diss tracks with local rapper Scotty Cain that drew attention to his brand.
Unfortunately, he had another brush with law enforcement in Austin, TX in 2016 and was arrested for attempted murder. Before his release the following year, Youngboy dropped another two mixtapes from jail.
In November 2020, Youngboy released his fourth mixtape of the year. From 2015 to the end of 2020, he has successfully launched his brand and musical career with a total of around 20 mixtapes, an album with a Lil Wayne feature, and numerous singles. Of those, multiple songs have charted and found themselves on the Billboard 100 or 200.
The constant production of songs has increased his popularity as much as the aggressive style of his singing and rapping abilities. With all of the musical success, though, comes the constant legal problems that tarnish his name in the public eye.
Issues With the Law
The incident in Austin found Youngboy arrested for his affiliation with a supposed drive-by shooting. He plead guilty to the accusation of 2 counts of attempted murder and was released in 2017 under extended probation.
Youngboy brushed elbows again with the police the next year after a warrant was issued for his arrest in Georgia. A video that was later released from the hotel in question showed Kentrell assaulting a victim. However, Youngboy was released in March 2018 on bail.
A shooting in Miami the following year that involved his then-girlfriend ended up sending Youngboy back to prison for 3 months and adding another 14 months to his probation. He stayed clear of law enforcement for a while before September 2020, when a large group of people including Youngboy were arrested in Baton Rouge on charges involving drug and gun sales.
His lawyer disputed the charges, saying that Kentrell was only in the area and had no drugs or guns on his person at the time of arrest. Since then, Youngboy has moved to Los Angeles and is in the midst of a legal battle with one of his ex-girlfriends.
Family
As known as he is for his music and the amount of songs he puts out on a frequent basis, the situation with NBA Youngboy kids have given him another presence in the media. Kentrell has 7 biological children with numerous women, including Floyd Mayweather’s daughter, Yaya.
Youngboy also raises an eight child, a son, that isn’t biologically his. Of course, his relations with these women are generally surrounded in controversy and drama. One of his ex-girlfriends allegedly stabbed a then-girlfriend at a party over some of that drama.
As a result of his actions, Youngboy has contracted a sexually-transmitted disease and a disease as a result of drugs.
Despite all of that, though, Youngboy considers himself a single man and has said many times that he only wants what is best for his children.
