The history of Antigua and Barbuda
The state of Antigua and Barbuda is an archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea. It is the destination of many tourists who every year populate its beautiful beaches.
It consists of three main islands, Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda. They were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. The British colonized them in the 17th century and created numerous plantations of sugar cane, cotton and tobacco, where slaves worked.
During the 18th century, Antigua became the headquarters of the British Caribbean fleet. In 1981, the State of Antigua and Barbuda gained independence from the United Kingdom, although it continued to be part of the Commonwealth. Today it is a constitutional monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II is the sovereign.
The differences between Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda, although very close together, are very different. In both islands the official language is English (Creole is also widespread) and the economy is based mainly on tourism.
The climate is mild and fairly dry, temperatures are around 27 degrees in winter, while in summer they reach even 30 degrees.
Antigua is the most densely populated island. It is characterized by colorful houses and crowded markets.
Barbuda, on the other hand, is quieter and wilder. It is the ideal island to spend a relaxing holiday on.
Antigua has coral and limestone origins. It has only one mountainous relief, Mount Boggy, 402 meters high. Barbuda, also of coral origin, is instead completely flat.
