The recent outbreak of coronavirus in China, in December 2019 has impacted greatly everyone and everything. The growing fear of the virus has also disrupted the sports world. It has not only threatened the Olympics but also the football matches. According to the reports, confirmed by FIGC – Italian Football Federation – the football match of Serie-A has been postponed till April 3rd of this year. Both football leagues, as well as the football fans, are disappointed by the disruption caused by Coronavirus!

FIGC Have Planned Certain Alternatives
Till now, just five games of this football season have been played – and 12 matches are still to be played. All the matches of this season played so far – are played behind the closed doors. In addition to the 12 full rounds of matches, there are another four fixtures that were postponed earlier – along with the second leg of the semi-finals of Coppa Italia!
Though the alternatives for the football seasons are yet to be discussed on the 23rd of March, there are few possibilities that could take place. According to the president of the FIGC – some alternative to end the season may include:
- Staging play-offs,
- Not announcing 2019-2020 Champion, or
- Declaring the current standings as final.
If the federation chooses Play-offs to determine the champions then both European qualification and three clubs would be put-down for Serie B. However, if the federation decided to go with the current standings then Juventus would be the Italian Champion, straight for the night season.
Is It The First Time That The Season Would End Without A Champion?
The odds are that FIGC decides to discontinue the 2019-20 season because of the Coronavirus. However, the decision to resume the game or not is still pending. Well, even if the federation decides to not announce any champion for this season, it wouldn’t be the first time!
Yes, you are reading it just fine! The Coppa Italia had another closed season without any champion. Back in 2004-05, Serie-A ended the season without any Champion! Well, if you are thinking that it was also due to an outbreak, then hold your thoughts. The reason why there was no champion for the 2004-05 season was the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal. In that season, the Juventus were stripped of the Champions title and the season ended without any champion.
The football fans surely want their favorite teams to show some action in the ground. However, all we can do is wait, hope and pray for the health and safety of everyone!
