Owning a luxury watch is on everyone’s list. While the ones who already own luxury watches know about the intricate details to keep in mind while choosing the watch, newbies need some help to understand what makes the watch more costly. So, here’s a list of six things to remember before sealing the deal.
1) Features
A modern-day luxury watch will have many features like multiple time zones, world calendars, chronographs, moon phases, chains and fuse assemblies. Luminance is also something that makes your watch valuable. Japanese watches have an edge over Swiss watches in this segment.
Watches showing multiple time zones will suit globetrotters the most while chronographs will be preferred by racers. For instance, Rolex Daytona is a chronograph watch that is specially designed for racers to record time for their lapses.
However, low end watches will not have so many features.
2) Mechanism
The luxury watches do not have a quartz mechanism that runs on batteries. These watches are mechanically operated and run on delicate system of cogs and springs that is crafted by the brands’ master craftsmen.
Therefore, they require regular servicing and adjustments.
3) Material
Premium watches are generally made using gold, titanium and platinum. Usage of steel grade 316L is the benchmark for luxury watches. In similar price range, titanium watches are also available. Titanium would be a better choice than steel 316L since it is lighter, gives a more polished look, is more durable and is scratch resistant.
Gold is costlier than titanium. If you are choosing a gold watch, selecting the ones with white gold and rose gold would be a good idea since white and rose gold is trending. But higher liquidity comes with pure gold.
The most expensive material is platinum. The metal does not lose its color or corrode. It will also give the most premium finish to a watch and is the heaviest amongst all. If you are planning to go all in, go for a platinum watch.
4) The maker
The high-end watches cost you more because they are specially crafted by the brand. More popular brands are Rolex, Rado, Citizen, Omega, TAG Heuer and Breitling. If you wear any of these brands’ iconic pieces, you taste for the luxe will be automatically conveyed.
If you pick up a limited-edition model or opt for a French or Italian brand like Cartier or Panerai, curiosity is sure to generate.
5) Stones
If you are buying a watch with stones, always check if it an artificial or a real one. While real stones are taken out of the earth for further processes, synthetic stones are grown in the laboratories. Colorful sapphires are the most commonly seen synthetic stones. Symmetrical cuts and clear colors should affect your purchase.
6) Locking mechanism
Premium watches usually employ at least two locking clasps. The first lock is the click mechanism, the second one is a metal flap the locks the first one and the third one is a push-button lock. Normal watches usually have a single clasp locking system.
