The concept of tiny homes is nothing new; a lot of homeowners have been opting for a much smaller living space throughout the past decade or so. There are tons of reasons for this, but the main one is that minimalism is in and materialism is out. Tiny homes are also much more environmentally friendly and leave a much smaller carbon footprint.
The only downfall of a tiny home is that it’s, well, tiny. You are extremely limited on your space, so this means you need to utilize your available space carefully. Luckily there are plenty of ways to do that and you can learn about them right here.
1) Use open storage in the kitchen
Kitchens in conventional homes have tons of storage space for pots, pans, and other kitchen essentials. You won’t have as much storage within your tiny kitchen, so you have to utilize it wisely. The best way to do that is to invest in open kitchen cabinetry where everything you need is within easy reach.
This can be extremely aesthetically pleasing if you do it the right way. You’ll be able to openly display your cookbooks and dishware, but this is not the best part. Opening up the cabinets by taking off the doors will not just make things accessible but it actually creates the illusion that your kitchen is larger than it actually is.
2) White paint will be your new best friend
Maybe you feel that white paint throughout the home is boring, but it is by far the best option for a tiny house. White walls, ceilings, and decor will make each room look much bigger and brighter. Feel free to liven the space up with colorful accessories, furniture, pillows and throws.
3) Utilize the space under your stairs
If your tiny home has two stories (which some of them do) don’t let the space underneath the stairs go to waste. You need to use every inch of space you have and utilizing the area under your stairs is a great way to do that. You’ll easily be able to fit a roll-out storage cart that can also serve as a table surface area when needed. The same goes for utilizing space under the bed.
4) Install bedside ledges
You might not have the space for a bedside table like you would in an average-sized home. This does not mean you have to go without one. You can find a huge selection of bedside ledges at home furniture stores like Ikea or Bed Bath and Beyond. Simply attach the ledge (or shelf) on the wall next to your bed; it won’t take up any floor space like a normal bedside table would.
5) Use your doors in a unique way
You might not normally think to use the surface of your door as storage within your home, but why not? The door is a great place to hang a shoe rack, install a towel rack, or hang a full-length mirror. Since your walls will most likely be white (if you listened to our advice) feel free to paint the door a funky color to make a statement.
How to Get Started on Maximizing Space
The way you would treat a job interview can often be applied to the use of space within your tiny home. In job interviewing, there is something called the STAR Method. This refers to using 4 steps to answer a question: situation, task, action, result.
You can build your tiny home by mastering the STAR Method. Your task is to maximize space. If you take the necessary actions to do so, you’ll see some amazing results!
