Metaphysicians, mystics, and spiritual thinkers alike all talk about the importance of the Higher Self — a part of us that is in perpetual communion with the Divine. Through the Higher Self, we receive the blessings of spiritual energy and inspiration. It is the guiding presence through life’s journey. Our Higher Self is in tune with our life’s purpose and spiritual potential. Through the Higher Self, the Divine sends us love and wisdom. However, too often we don’t listen to the promptings the Divine sends us through our Higher Selves. Why?
Learning about and working with the Higher Self is an essential part of your spiritual growth. It has a tremendous uplifting effect on everything going on in your life. To better distinguish what the Higher Self is and to more fully cooperate with this glorious part of you, you need to first understand the part of your spiritual anatomy you are engaged with right now — your lower self.
The Lower Self
When a soul is immersed in material consciousness through the process of reincarnation, metaphysics calls this state of experience “the lower nature” or “the lower self.” Your lower self is the part of you immersed in physical consciousness and matter. The term “lower nature” in this context does not mean less than. The term relates to the position in the divine order of things. The Higher Nature is guiding the lower nature through life’s experiences.
As the soul is immersed in physical life, it takes on qualities and characteristics of the lower self, building its own persona. Metaphysics calls this the “Personality Ego.” We all have one. Each personality is different because we each come from our own experiences and interact with life in our own way. The Personality Ego is like the mask an actor wears when he or she is performing a part in a play. Your name, your physical attributes, the environment and milieus you identify with, your habits, and so on are part of your personality, yet they are not the real you in the mystic sense.
The lower nature could never climb the spiritual summit on its own, as it simply doesn’t have the know-how to do so. And this is why we too often ignore the promptings of the Higher Nature. We are so absorbed in the consciousness and activities of the lower self that we neglect the Higher Self. Our job is to first listen and respond to the promptings of the Higher Nature, draw in that power, and put it into active use. The only way the soul can aspire to greater spiritual heights is if there is a part of the consciousness that is not immersed in material experience and is already spiritually aware. This is the job of your Higher Self.
The Higher Self
In the auric field, the Higher Self is a chakra point about two feet above the physical head. Its full name is The Higher Self Point of Spiritual Knowing. It radiates beautiful golden-white rays of light and looks like a radiant golden sun. By remaining above the physical head and outside the auric field, it does not mix with the elements of the human aura — and this is its great benefit to you. By being outside the human aura, it remains in a state of perfection, perpetually supporting and uplifting your soul upward in its ascent.
The Higher Self has been with you all along. Because of your Higher Self, you could never become completely lost. There is always that reminder urging you upward. As you build powers and talents, the Higher Self becomes more pronounced. As you draw more power from the Higher Nature, you are refining the character and quality of the lower nature, spiritualizing it. In addition to the power the Higher Nature gives, it is also there to remind you of your true divine nature. Metaphysics calls the individual stamp and character of your higher nature the “Individuality Ego.”
Most people identify so strongly with their personality of the lower nature that they don’t realize they have a greater self. Yet this is the goal. Step by step, bit by bit, you learn to relinquish the hold that the Personality Ego has and claim your true higher nature as an Individuality Ego. This is not easy to do. The Personality Ego will resist your efforts to claim your individuality. Much of the inner turmoil you may feel in your life and spiritual work is the personality fighting your efforts to spiritualize yourself.
3 Reasons People Don’t Listen to Their Higher Selves
1) Not Knowing It’s There: We can be so focused on our lower nature that we don’t realize there IS a higher nature. The key is educating yourself. Learn about what the Higher Self is, as well as what spirituality and metaphysics are. The more you learn about yourself and your true nature, the more you can do in life!
2) Having Difficulty Telling Which One Is Speaking: This is a dilemma even for those on the spiritual path. Being aware that there is a Higher Nature doesn’t mean you are in tune with the Higher. The process of distinguishing what is coming from the Higher and what is your own lower nature is not easy to decipher. It requires steady practice and effort to truly build a rapport with the Higher Self. Start by quieting the mind. Through application, you will learn to distinguish various voices to discern the voice of the Divine.
3) Not Liking What the Higher Is Saying: Sometimes the very thing that is best for you is not what you feel like doing in a given moment. When opening up to the Higher, you must be ready for whatever comes through, knowing that it’s always in your best interest. For example, there may be something you want very much — like a job that has opened up, for example — but you get inspiration that this job is not the way to go. The lower nature can end up rejecting inspiration and taking the job, only to realize later that job was not what you thought it was going to be.
You won’t always be able to intellectually rationalize the answer that comes from the Higher Self. However, if you intuitively sense that what is being given is right, trust in the Higher and give it a try. As you put inspiration into motion, the results will reveal if it was true inspiration or just your own thoughts and wants.
How to Build Better Rapport With Your Higher Self
How can you have a better relationship with your Higher Self? A good place to start is with meditation. Meditation is your time to still the consciousness and receive from the Divine. There are many types of meditations depending on the goal of meditation and the temperament of the individual. Meditating with the auric field is a wonderful way to strengthen and uplift the consciousness. A good place to start meditating with the aura and Divine Light is through reflective meditation. Reflective meditation involves focusing your attention on pleasing visual imagery, with colors specific to the aura to help attract the energy of the color you’re envisioning. Here are two simple reflection meditations to begin drawing in Divine Light and changing your life for the better:
1) Flower Meditation to Still the Mind — Envision yourself walking through a field of brilliant purple flowers. Put your attention on the beauty and vibrancy of that purple. Connecting with that image and really feeling those vivid purple flowers will draw in the energy of peace and tranquility to quiet the mind and soul so you are more receptive to the Higher.
2) Meditation With Higher Self — Envision a golden-white sun above your head about two feet. As best you can, direct your attention toward feeling the divine consciousness of your Higher Self. Envision a flow of white light showering you from this golden white sun, uplifting you and helping you better tune into your divine Higher Nature.
Do your best to make your Higher Self your best friend, as it will lead you to extraordinary places in your spiritual ascent.
