What We Need is Here

The dancing bamboo and palms surrounding the Hawaiian cottage rustle and speak the sound the wind would make if it had a voice. Tropical birds, six or seven types at least, hide from view but chirp and call as loud and playful as possible, like me, also intoxicated by this beautiful island morning.

As I sit meditating before the simple modest alter, without statues or relics, just the divine presence of tropical flowers, goddesses each one, I'm lifted from the “no of the world” to the “illimitable yes” of god and the earth herself. I'm aware of the yawning on the floor, as if whispering her morning prayers to the god who consecrates laziness.

“I would love to find myself in a temple today,” I catch myself thinking. Immediately, another voice in my own head answers, “What you're seeking isn't found in any temple outside of you.” I'm already experiencing the solitude, the sacredness, the invitation to holiness right here in the corner of this two-roomed temple, the Bamboo Cottage as I have dubbed it.

What we need is here.

I'm not interested in what it takes to be a saint or a guru. I find myself much too busy with the impossible challenge of being human. I suppose I'm too busy learning to listen, to see, to smell, to taste, to touch, to love, to worry about anything less noble. To hell with it! It's about two things: you. And me. It's about coming together and sharing this moment of life together. We share all kinds of togetherness, you could all name a few, but the way I love and know the most is by practicing yoga together. Yoga is about exploring ourselves, together, here and now. I don't care who has the shiniest yoga studio or how many people want to come and practice there (or who is the guru or who is the saint). Bigger than any of that is the commitment of being real. When all the bullshit is stripped away, magic can happen-the magic of humanity. The magic of this moment. From this firm ground of what's real, we can step past illusion and pretense and into the sacred privilege of being human.

What We Need is Here by Wendell Berry

Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
