Clear and accurate communications are needed in December as Mercury goes direct on December 6, aspected by the shadow planet, Rahu. Venus completes its exceptional four-month transit through the sign of Libra at the end of December, creating greater insight and certainty in love and relationships. The Sun travels with Saturn in Sagittarius mid-December until mid-January, with imbalances of power becoming more visible, and greater self-discipline needed. The Sun transits through the gandanta degrees of Scorpio/Sagittarius mid-December, followed by the winter solstice on December 21, and this combination generates deep insights and renewal during this sacred time of the year.

Mercury, planet of communications, information, and the intellect, goes direct at 3 degrees Scorpio on December 6, 2018, after being retrograde since November 16, 2018. At the same time, Rahu, north node of the Moon, will also be at 3 degrees in the sign of Cancer, aspecting Mercury exactly. Rahu’s impact on Mercury in the hidden and mysterious sign of Scorpio may create some cloudy thinking, but can also bring interesting secrets to light. When Mercury goes direct, it is easier to resolve any misunderstandings with others. Collectively we desire truth, accuracy, and high ethics in business, politics, and the media with the Rahu/Mercury aspect. We realize the powerful influence our words have on others, and find ways to uplift and serve in more positive ways.

Venus, planet of love and relationships, has been transiting its own sign of Libra since September 1, and will complete its time in Libra on January 1, 2019. During the past months, conflicts surfaced that required us to go deeper and be vulnerable in order to heal our hearts and our relationships. Now we can put into practice lessons learned about love and kindness with our family and friends during this holiday season. This is a positive month to focus on creating greater peace and harmony in the world as we begin a new year.

On December 15 and 16, 2018, the Sun transits 29 degrees Scorpio and 0 degrees Sagittarius, which are called gandanta or “spiritual knot” degrees. There are three of these junctures in the zodiac – where water and fire signs meet. The Sun moves through the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp every December, about a week before the winter solstice on December 21. This is an important time to let go, “untie the knot,” and deepen our understanding of our true nature, possibly creating major shifts if we don’t resist.

As the Sun begins its transit through the fire sign of Sagittarius from December 16 to January 14, 2019, it will conjunct Saturn there. These two planets are not so friendly with each other, and can give rise to power struggles. This is a time to be realistic, practical, and responsible in life and with our actions. Work to create more equanimity in your personal and work relationships. Be authentic and focus your energies in areas of your life that you believe will give you the most self-expression and internal growth, in order to create greater happiness in life. The Saturn/Sun combination also motivates us to be better organized and efficient at work and at home.

The exact conjunct of Saturn and the Sun will occur on January 1, 2019 at 17 degrees Sagittarius, when Saturn will be totally combust the Sun. When Saturn transits close to the Sun, its significations are weakened. Lessons in self-discipline can surface. Authority figures are challenged. Meditation and practicing neutrality with compassion are positive activities at this time.

The winter solstice occurs on December 21, 2018, the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, when we naturally turn inward as it is a sacred day of renewal and rebirth.   This is a time to connect to your deeper values in life, taking time out for inner reflection. Plan some quiet time, look within, and set meaningful intentions for the coming new year.
