The month of March brings the spring eclipse season with two eclipses, one occurring on March 8 and the other one on March 23, 2016. In the Vedic tradition eclipses are considered days of spiritual initiation or focus and are wonderful times to perform our spiritual practices, mantras, and to offer prayers.

In general, things hidden come to light. Deeper insights are revealed that guide us on the correct path. Eclipses are times of change, and may offer divine messages or insights into our own healing. Effects of eclipses can be felt for many months afterwards. During eclipses, meditation, introspection, and slowing down are recommended as we are also more sensitive on the day of the eclipse, as well as a few days before and after.

Generally speaking, as March is an eclipse month, it is not considered the best time to make big decisions or commitments, but wait until next month when there is more clarity. It is a good period to review, contemplate, organize, and finish things rather than starting new projects.

On March 8 at 6:54 PM (MST) we experience a total solar eclipse at 24 degrees Aquarius in the nakshatra of Purva Bhadrapada. As this is a total solar eclipse (new moon), issues arise to be healed concerning the significations of the Sun – such as our identity, soul-connection, career, health, confidence, and self-esteem.

The nakshatra of Purva Bhadrapada is quite intense, passionate, and healing, so our spiritual practices become very profound and a deeply purifying experience, sometimes after emotional upheaval and the feeling of being pulled in two directions. It’s advised to temper our desirous nature, and work with discernment. This is a time to “walk the middle path,” acknowledge the ebb and flow of life, and be non-reactive. Jupiter, the planet of divine grace, wisdom, and protection, is exactly opposing the Sun and Moon at 24 degrees of Leo during this solar eclipse, which can possibly lift this eclipse up with a little divine intervention and understanding.

On March 23 at 6:01 AM (MST) the lunar eclipse occurs at 9 degrees Virgo in the nakshatra of Uttara Phalguni. Lunar eclipses can heighten our emotional and mental sensitivities. The sign of Virgo as well as the nakshatra of Uttara Phalguni both promote service and healing to those in need, or may even shed light on those we have neglected in the past, but who now need our help and support. Proper conduct, positive ethical behavior, and sharing equally are themes at this time, but watch for the shadow of this nakshatra to surface, bringing imbalances of power, and issues with joint finances or generosity.

Mercury is debilitated and combust the Sun during this lunar eclipse, indicating a time to be very clear and precise with all types of communications, business dealings, and travel plans. This eclipse is about finding the goodness that always lies within each of us, and directing us to express this light out into the world, knowing as we help others – we help ourselves.

Venus transits Aquarius from March 7 until March 31, 2016, where it will be with Ketu, the south node of the Moon. Venus and Ketu will exactly conjunct at 27 degrees Aquarius on March 29. We should pay attention to our relationships and finances (Venus) with this combination. What we value in life is being redefined, forcing us to connect to our deeper truths and beliefs. We need to make a strong and conscious effort to be centered in our hearts. The Ketu influence on Venus may indicate some past karmic patterns or false impressions about rejection and love that we need to release for our expanded growth, as we learn to love more unconditionally. Spiritually, Venus and Ketu together bring opportunities for devotional practices (Bhakti yoga).

Mercury transits Pisces (its sign of debility) from March 18 until April 2, 2016. It will be combust the Sun almost this entire time – from March 18 until March 28. Mercury in Pisces increases our mental sensitivity and visionary qualities. But with the combustion of Mercury, communications can be nebulous, unclear, or unsettled. We can experience more mental confusion as we need more time to make correct decisions. So pay attention to details and don’t make quick assumptions. This transit challenges us to really listen inside, be more diplomatic and flexible. Meditation and pranayama (breath work) are positive practices.

Saturn, planet of focus and discipline, goes retrograde at 22 degrees Scorpio on March 25, 2016 (two days after the lunar eclipse) until August 13, 2016. Saturn goes retrograde every year for a little over four months at a time. Saturn retrograde periods help us to develop inner fortitude, usually as a result of personal struggles or sacrifices. We have to willingly be self-disciplined. Try not to take on responsibilities that are not yours. Also remember that Mars is now in Scorpio with Saturn since February 20, so let this combination promote courageous actions and strength. We are learning about the consequences of our actions or even our inactions in life. Creating realistic, positive, and attainable goals is also part of the process of restructuring your life with Saturn retrograde. Being with supportive and encouraging people or groups is advised.
