Vedic Astrology for July 2019: Practice Flexibility, Humbleness, and Being Less Judgmental

vedic astrology May 2015

The major astrological events in July are the two eclipses, a total solar eclipse on July 2, followed by a partial lunar eclipse on July 16.  Mars is transiting Cancer, its sign of debility all month, signaling a time to stay calm not over-react. Mercury, planet of communications goes retrograde July 7 through July 31, so double-check plans and be precise in conversation with others.

On July 2, 2019 we experience a total solar eclipse at 16 degrees Gemini at 12:17 PM (MST), followed by a lunar eclipse the evening of July 16, 2019, at 29 degrees Sagittarius at 2:37 PM (MST). Eclipses are major astrological events designed to reveal what is hidden, bringing light and deeper understandings to the planet. Eclipses have a spiritual connotation, awakening us to our greater potential. They are points of change, and may offer us insights into our own evolution. Material or mundane activities should be avoided if possible around eclipses. The effects of eclipses can last for months. It is advised to not make important decisions around an eclipse as unexpected events surface around eclipses and we may not see things so clearly. Meditation, retreat, and inner work are positive remedies for eclipses.

The July 2 total solar eclipse (new Moon) occurs at 16 degrees Gemini in the nakshatra of Ardra. This eclipse in the air sign of Gemini can highlight communication, travel, or educational issues. Ardra nakshatra’s symbol is a teardrop, indicating intense emotions and feelings are stirred up, and if directed in a positive way, motivates us to participate in compassionate and humanitarian activities to help alleviate the suffering in our world. All lives are important. On the challenging side, watch for any hidden anger issues to surface as we get involved in argumentative exchanges with others, and instead, try to substitute love for fear. This is a time to get beyond limiting intellectual barriers and allow the heart to open.

The July 16 lunar eclipse (full Moon) takes place in the nakshaktra of Uttara Ashadha at 29 degrees Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a sign that indicates a focus on freedom, fairness, justice, and humanitarianism. The shadow-side of Sagittarius can manifest as stubbornness, bluntness, and a lack of maturity. Some of the effects of this eclipse may be felt in the political arena.  The nakshatra Uttara Ashadha means “the latter undefeated,” and so this eclipse could indicate patience and persistence will be needed at this time for eventual success, and we should not give up so easily. This is also considered to be a lonely nakshatra, so to counterbalance this, plan some positive social connections with good friends and family. The symbol for this nakshatra is the tusk of an elephant, indicating a deep connection to Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles. The motivation of this nakshatra is moksha, or spiritual liberation. Spiritual aspirations and practices begun now could take some time to reap the rewards, but they have significant and lasting value.

Mars, planet of action and assertiveness is now transiting Cancer, its sign of debility, from June 23 until August 9, 2019, during this sensitive month of eclipses. This is indeed a period to intelligently control one’s anger and aggressive tendencies. We may even sense this on a global scale. Work on your inner self and you might help change the world.

On a personal level, with Mars in Cancer, we must watch for being too impulsive or acting out of fear, which can later bring regret. Stay calm and be mindful. Deep concerns around security, home, and family may surface during this transit through this sensitive water sign. As Mars can feel weaker in Cancer, we might find self- assertiveness is more difficult, or we bury our anger and frustration, and later become argumentative and resistant to change. Practice flexibility, humbleness, and be less judgmental, as our energies may be more inconsistent or less direct. Family conflicts and resentment can surface. To stabilize our emotions, a positive, calm, and supportive environment is needed. Practice yoga, tai chi, or techniques that stabilize the emotions. Be appreciative and grateful to family members.

Mercury, planet of the intellect and communications, goes retrograde July 7 to July 31, 2019 at 10 degrees Cancer, very close to debilitated Mars. In general during a Mercury retrograde period, it is wise to be precise with what you say or put in writing. But with Mars connected to Mercury, we need to watch stinging words, irritations, and becoming headstrong, and instead be patient and grounded. Mercury retrograde is a good time to review your plans and research ideas, back up data, and take time for inner reflection and meditation.
