Vedic Astrology Report for January 2020: Change and Transformation

vedic astrology May 2015

January 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade and the major astrological events occurring this month signal the beginnings of change and transformation. From January 7 to 10, 2020, Jupiter and Ketu are exactly conjunct at 14 degrees Sagittarius. This combination is quite intuitive with spiritual overtones. Then on January 10, 2020, we experience a lunar eclipse in the sign of Gemini, indicating a time of revelation. The most impactful event this month is Saturn changing signs on January 23, 2020, shifting from the fire sign of Sagittarius to the earth sign of Capricorn. Saturn is the slowest moving planet in Vedic astrology, taking approximately 2 ½ to 3 years to move through a sign, therefore it is very important when Saturn begins its transit through a new sign.

Jupiter, planet of spirituality, and Ketu, planet of moksha or enlightenment, are conjunct exactly at 14 degrees Sagittarius from January 7 to 10, 2020. Our intuition and psychic sensitivities are amplified now, and we are more aware of subtle energies. The Jupiter/Ketu combination increases our interest in alternative philosophies and esoteric studies. Deepening our spiritual practice is also emphasized.

The lunar eclipse (full moon) on January 10, 2020 occurs at 12:21 PM MST at 25 degrees Gemini in the nakshatra of Punarvasu. Mercury will also be exactly conjunct the Sun at 25 degrees Sagittarius during this eclipse. With Mercury combust the Sun, we will need to be mindful of our communications with others and be discerning. We can feel heightened sensitivity and more vulnerability around eclipse dates. Eclipses can also bring divine insights, especially with the Jupiter/Ketu conjunction so close to this eclipse. Be open to transformation, awareness, and healing with this eclipse.

This January 10th eclipse is in Punarvasu nakshatra, also called “the star of renewal,” and carries a nurturing and rejuvenating energy, reviving greater love and compassion for one another as well as the need for deeper connections to our families or to our community. Punarvasu’s deity is Aditi, the mother goddess, who brings forth the divine feminine energies. This eclipse could amplify the desire for a more balanced relationship with nature with increased focus on environmentalism, sustainability, and agricultural concerns. Material or worldly pursuits are not recommended in the days surrounding eclipses. Instead, use this time to focus on your heart, listen to your inner voice, and possibly initiate self-improvement or healing activities.

Saturn begins its transit through the cardinal earth sign of Capricorn from January 23, 2020 to April 28, 2022, and again from July 12, 2022 until January 17, 2023. Saturn is strong in its own sign of Capricorn, so Saturn energies are amplified. If your Ascendant is Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, or Aries, this transit of Saturn in Capricorn is especially impactful for you, as it creates a transiting Shasha Yoga, requiring a positive expression of Saturn energies. The benefic expression of Saturn is great insight into life, detachment, peacefulness, and equanimity.

Saturn is a planet that demands truth, authenticity, discipline, and neutrality. Effort is required with Saturn in Capricorn, and we may work hard. We want order, stability, and a firm foundation. Saturn transits are long, so patience is required for success as you weed out the superficial in your life.

Take action because you know it’s the right thing to do, and not for a reward. Be present and serve others and the planet if you are able, as Saturn likes charitable activities. We can become very determined and self-reliant now. Saturn in Capricorn likes to be honored, but can also be respectful of tradition and elders.

Capricorn rules the government and politics, so there will be a greater focus and need for truth in this area. But we do have to watch for a desire to gain control of others, along with rigid beliefs, and refusal to make needed changes while Saturn transits Capricorn. As Capricorn is an earth sign, there also may be more attention given to nature, the soil and land, and with our food supply.

If you feel resistance in your life, search for the reason behind it. Be practical, realistic, and objective. Don’t be too hard on yourself and be able to receive as well as to give. Be kind and mindful. Love what you do. Take time to go into silence, and be open to positive, honest change.
