Vedic Astrology Report for December 2019: Inner Growth and Spiritual Expansion

vedic astrology May 2015

In December we experience the winter solstice, a time of spiritual renewal, on December 21, 2019. Four days later, the eclipse season begins, with a solar eclipse occurring the evening of December 25, 2019 (MST), while the second eclipse of this pair, a lunar one, happens next year on January 10, 2020 (MST). Three planets, Mercury, Moon, and Mars, shift to new signs the morning of the solar eclipse of December 25, suggesting an interesting holiday season.

Winter officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere with the winter solstice occurring on Saturday, December 21, 2019. This day has the fewest hours of sunlight, and so is the longest night of the year. At this time of the year we naturally turn inward. The winter solstice is an exceptional and sacred day for inner reflection, self-examination, meditation, and prayer. This is a positive time to express gratitude, generosity, and connect with those we love. Take some quiet time to set meaningful intentions for the coming new year.

Mercury, planet of the intellect, communications, and travel, moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius at 3:15 AM MST the morning of December 25, the solar eclipse day.  Mercury will also be transiting through the sensitive gandanta degrees (junction point between water and fire signs). This is a day to be mindful of your words, discern, and take care if you are traveling. Mercury will stay in Sagittarius until January 12, 2020. In general, Mercury in Sagittarius wants to learn and explore new ideas, so this is a good period to attend stimulating classes or seminars.

Next the Moon, planet of perception, shifts from its debilitated sign of Scorpio to Sagittarius at 4:11 AM MST on December 25, also passing through the same gandanta degrees that Mercury traveled an hour earlier. Try not to be too sensitive or over-react on Christmas morning. Enjoy your time with family and friends, as the Moon likes to socialize and be with like-minded people.

A little later on December 25, at 9:15 AM MST, Mars, planet of action, assertiveness, and passion, travels to a new sign, going from Libra to its own sign of Scorpio. Mars remains in Scorpio until February 8, 2020. In general, Mars is happy in Scorpio, energizing and empowering us. Mars is also very intense, driven, and ambitious during this transit. But do watch for being too competitive, frustrated, or involved in power struggles as Mars in Scorpio now aspects Rahu, the north node in Gemini. Direct this amplified energy to positive expressions, possibly donating your time to important causes or even take a course in conflict resolution or peacemaking.

The major event this December is the powerful solar eclipse (New Moon) on Christmas evening, December 25, 2019, at 10:13 PM MST. However, if you are on the east coast of the US, this eclipse occurs just after midnight, in the early morning of December 26. Remember that eclipses are considered spiritual days, and not for materialistic pursuits. So with the winter solstice occurring just a few days before the Christmas evening solar eclipse – prayers, kindness, and goodwill to all on the planet are especially positive expressions.

This solar eclipse is at 9 degrees Sagittarius in the nakshatra of Mula. Mula is the nakshatra that contains the Galactic Center of the universe, indicating a great need to go deep within, as we re-connect to our inner strength and courage. Mula means “the root” so we are asked to get to the core of things, experiencing intense transformation, while remaining grounded and balanced. Remedies for Mula nakshatra are virtuous living, generosity, and ahimsa (non-violence). Remember eclipses are times of revelation, and any new information that surfaces now may help us find our truth.

During this solar eclipse on December 25, there will be a big emphasis on the sign of Sagittarius, with six planets there – the Sun, Moon, Ketu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. Jupiter, the great benefic planet, will be within 2 degrees of the solar eclipse, and so has some impact and influence. Areas of personal or global focus with this eclipse include belief systems, spiritual life, the truth, religion, fundamentalism, prosperity, humanitarian concerns, and legal issues.

This is an important month of inner growth, increased awareness, and spiritual expansion.
