Transpersonal Mindfulness

As I was speculating on altering the title of my preliminary research work, instead of just sticking to mindfulness, I considered adding a prefix – transpersonal. When I further reflected, I realized that I might have just coined a new term – transpersonal mindfulness. Voilà! I developed further the definition of this new term, after combining existing definitions of the words “mindfulness” and “transpersonal”. Thus, I derived a new definition after the integration of the meanings of the aforementioned words.

I define it thus:

Transpersonal Mindfulness refers to being present in the moment while simultaneously being receptive to states of consciousness that transcend the ego, or go beyond the limits of personal identity.

This term that I've coined may seem like a mere juxtapose of two words. If we plunge deeper, it holds enormous weightage and can lead to new way of perceiving the essence of “Carpe Diem”. We're all spiritual beings after all and adding an element of spirituality to mindfulness holds potential for all of us. Perhaps in the future, an extrapolation would emerge, which is, Transcendental Mindfulness. This juxtaposition brings with it semantic difficulties. Pondering this second new term, I'm thinking of how I can operationally define it in the first place. According to www.vocabulary.com, transcendence is the act of rising above something to a superior state. Transcendence is derived from the Latin prefix “trans”-, meaning “beyond” and the word “scandare,” meaning “to climb.” I'm not sure how to distinguish “transpersonal” from “transcendental,” though I may say that the latter is one step higher in the ladder of spiritual ascension.

Coming back to the initial term in the discussion – Transpersonal Mindfulness, let me illustrate it by way of an example.

Imagine you're trekking in the Himalayas and you pause for a breather. As you are perched on a rock and observe the surroundings in tranquility, you sense a feeling of calmness. As you close your eyes and listen to the wind, you feel a sense of connection with the cosmos and experience an idiosyncratic alteration in your quale or in other words, your subjective awareness in this context. It is a distinctive phenomenological experience that you can't put down on paper. The challenge is that such an experience surpasses linguistic articulation and till date, such qualia have no mechanism of being “borrowed” by another layperson perceiver, though outliers like shamans and psychics may be able to access such states of qualia, albeit ephemerally.

Vishen Lakhiani, the co-founder and CEO of Mindvalley has proposed a concept called Bending Reality. This is a state of being during which time, you feel like everything in life is bending in your direction, and it is the new mantra for success. Transpersonal Mindfulness I proffer, may well be a way, or a tool of bending that reality!
