These may not be the fanciest tiny house ever built, and it’s without plumbing, because it’s owners, Liam Culbertson and Rachel Newby live on a communal property with shared kitchen and bathroom spaces, and still, it’s pretty impressive. For $420 Australian (or New Zealand) , which is about $320 USD at the time of this post, the couple built a nice little living space.

Neither had any experience building structures and feel the experience they gained is as valuable as the home they created. They built the tiny house over a three month period, salvaging free used materials all along the way.

They set out to make the house by hand, but ended up needing to use a power drill and an impact driver. The couple only had to buy six things they couldn’t find for free: cement for the foundation, steel bracing tape, roof screws, wood glue, chains to hold the windows open, and hinges.

Most of the house was built with a hand saw and a hammer.

The community that Liam, Rachel and the filmmaker, Jordon Osmond, and others live in consists of privately owned land that they are all granted permission to live on in exchange for developing the property by building infrastructure, veggie gardens.

Osmond feels like that more mutually-beneficial scenarios like these will arise in the future.
