Think You’re On the Spiritual Path? Think Again! (Must Listen)

Renowned spiritual philosopher and teacher Neil Kramer explains why most people are not living spiritually even if they think they are!

“Spiritual work is difficult!”

This was the sobering proclamation of spiritual philosopher and teacher Neil Kramer in my part two interview with him.

In this episode he details the necessity to map our inner (and outer) shadow in order to truly walk a spiritual path.

Though many new age practices highlight that living a life of peace and positivity will usher you down a spiritual path, Kramer begs to differ.

“Spiritual work is hard, severe, brutal, punishing work. And if that isn’t happening you’re not doing it properly,” Kramer explained.

The process he refers to as shadow mapping he defines as “An appreciation that truth brings pain.”

Rooted in both Hermetic and alchemical teaching, spiritual work begins when you not only acknowledge the shadow aspects of your self and your world but are willing to address them head on, no matter how difficult they may be.

Still, Kramer maintains that most people are loathe to take that critical initiatory step and maintain a life of fiction, rather than address the trauma that truth often brings.

“Shadow mapping is an initiation – a test. And it is too tricky and difficult that [people] decide to ultimately turn away. They can’t handle it…Instead of living with truth, they would rather live with a fiction,” he went on to say.

Though he feels that once the “shadow” is fully addressed, in keeping with alchemical tradition, the pain that is resurrected from past personal trauma, whether physical, emotional or otherwise can be brought to the surface and then transmuted into a more preferable and positive state of being.

In my own discussions with those who insist that the negative or shadow aspects of life should be avoided at all costs and that “keeping it positive” is the way forward, Kramer had this to say…

“The shadow is half of the spectrum of human life. It’s the negative. It’s the minus on your Duracell battery. It’s the moon above your head. It’s the female destroyer. It’s everything that powers life. If it wasn’t for the negative, the positive that generates life could never work…There is a force of harmony and a force of disharmony and an interference pattern that they create…the interweaving of life that they create is what we are. We are the result of those forces. And so to ignore half of that equation, is to simply seek refuge.”

As always, Neil Kramer's words and insights are brutally honest, but inspiring and liberating for those who are willing to dive deep into the mystery we call life.

Alexis I listened to the interview with Neil Kramer and was impressed with his knowledge of our present state of world consciencness. I would have one more caveat to that premise that thing’s are as they need to be for now anyway. If I could l would suggest reading this post from 2008 the Hidden Hand.
