The Theory of Everything…AND Nothing!

The Theory of EverythingHave you seen the film “The Theory of Everything” yet, the story of the genius Stephen Hawking? It's an absolutely wonderful film, which to me, speaks on many levels. Not least is it an incredible story of the challenges a soul can thrive through (in the form of motor neurone disease), but it's also a compelling love story, and as well, points towards the marriage between science and spirituality. It's an epic, a must see. Personally, I believe that by integrating science with spirituality, it's possible to have a full, experiential realisation of the nature of the universe. I wonder if it's possible without that? This film, for me, dares to bring one to the edge of that realisation…

Where science and spirituality meet

It would seem that somewhere back in history, science has divorced itself from spirituality, and vice versa. It was with some of the scientific greats, from Aristotle to Galileo and Sir Issac Newton, that a more cerebral solution to the biggest questions of the universe took over (somewhat reluctantly and violently!) from religion. For me though, it was Einstein the developer of quantum theory (originated by Max Planck), who in his own consciousness, began to merge science and spirituality. In the quantum field, that becomes possible. Why? Because put simply, it shows that everything is energy and interconnected; it demonstrates that the observer interrelates with what is observed; and with ‘space-time-continuum', it confirms the ‘one moment of now'.

So the point I believe we're coming to,
is where science and spirituality meet.

This convergence is parodied wonderfully in the film, where Stephen the cosmologist, is continually challenged by his spiritual wife to test within his consciousness whether the universe does indeed have a “God”.

This is where for me it gets fascinating. One day I would love to sit with some of these great thinkers. Why?

Transcending Reality

Because in contemplating the nature of the universe and from where it all began, Stephen traces time back to before the Big Bang. It's at this point though, where we must step beyond the intellect, in order to get exactly what happened. How can you do that?

Put simply, by transcending reality,
by piercing space time itself – stepping through it as the One –
until you actually experience it as nothing.

It's right there, this ‘presence', preceding all thought, emotion and feeling. But you can't know it simply with the mind. Yes, it can be recorded in the mind, and yes, once your awareness knows what it is looking at, then the mind can register it. But the mind will never understand it, until one's soul has known it.

And vice versa! – you could come at presence also from a purely spiritual means; you could feel it experientially. Except this is a non-experience! So you have to step through the experience in order to get to presence. And that can only be recorded in some ‘device' like the mind. So to know what you're experiencing, there has to be some recording of it.

Nothing is….Everything!

Here's then where the two meet, where the intellect and soul merge on the altar of pure presence. Being dissolves into presence; presence emerges into being. It's the dynamic equilibrium which for me, is the very paradox that yields like itself.

I once read the book “The Blind Watchmaker” by the famous ‘God Basher' of similar name Richard Dawking. It's a truly excellent read, right up to the point he talks about contemplating reality and what precedes experience – he suggests you do it in a kind of meditation, and then triumphantly postulates there is nothing there!

Yes indeed there is nothing!

But on the edge of this black-hole which precedes time, and still exists right in the background of your experience, nothing becomes everything – which is both awesome, and awesomely ordinary.

That is unless, the ego creates something out of that boundary – like “God does not exist”. I agree, God does not exist, but that doesn't mean that there's no God! To me, God is pure potential – nothing AND everything – both at the same time. It is ordinary and awesomely ordinary. When the ego doesn't own, resist or fear the non-experience (of God), then divine magic happens. You become present. You are enlightened –
You become God.

I do believe that spirituality could really help science, and vice versa. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

Maybe with this film, that marriage will begin. Enjoy, it's a real corker…
