10 Things You Didn’t Know About Marijuana

The marijuana industry is a big business, and with more countries than ever before recognizing the positive benefits of using cannabis, it has become a controversial debate in recent years. Marijuana has hundreds of different nicknames such as weed, pot, and Mary Jane, and is an annual flowering herb that is used for a wide variety of purposes.

Cannabis is used widely as a popular recreational drug all over the world, and around 25 million Americans are believed to have used cannabis at some point in their life. The typical effects of cannabis are known to be relaxing and it gives users a mild feeling of euphoria.

Cannabis plants contain cannabinoid compounds, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol is known to have medical benefits for those who suffer from chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about marijuana:

1) All Seeds Look the Same

One of the most surprising things about cannabis seeds is that they all look the same. All the best regular weed seeds will look identical no matter what strain they are. Good quality seeds will be a brown color with patterned stripes on them. If you are unsure whether a seed is of a decent quality, then you should try squeezing them between your fingers; a good quality seed should be hard and difficult to break.

There are numerous different types of seeds available to buy on the market today, including auto-flowering and non-feminised cannabis seeds. It is important that you buy the best quality seeds available in order to produce good quality marijuana. One trustworthy supplier you can explore is the UK Company Seed Supreme, who’s well-known for offering top marijuana seeds through their safe and secure website.  They ship worldwide and test their seeds on a regular basis for countries where germination is legal.

2) It is Legal in Almost 50% of America

In over half of American states, weed has been legalized in some form, for either recreational or medical purposes. California was the first state to legalize marijuana back in 1996 for medical uses, and over the following decade, 28 more states followed their lead.

However, in 2012, Colorado and Washington were the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Since then, Nevada, Alaska, Massachusetts, and Oregon are amongst the states that have legalized recreational use.

3) The Black Market is Still Rife Today

Even though marijuana has been increasingly legalized across the US, the underground trade of cannabis is still as prevalent as it ever has been. Often, the legalization of the green market by states has led to high taxation on growing and buying cannabis, leading to a rise in prices.

In Colorado, taxes increase the price of cannabis by 30% in some instances. Therefore, it is no surprise that around 40% of cannabis transactions are carried out illegally, as the underground market offers much cheaper products.

4) The Plant Is Always Innovated

Even though seeds all look the same, there are hundreds of different strands of the plant that are constantly being innovated by developers for their own natural grow purposes. Also referred to as breeders, those who grow cannabis plants are always trying to expand and improve the already existing strains, as well as establishing brand new ones.

The different strains of cannabis are known to offer various types of effects, from euphoric experiences to more mellow body highs.

5) The Market Is Still Developing

The marijuana industry is a growing business and the legal cannabis industry was expected to be worth around $1.5 billion in 2014. This estimate has grown every year and the global market is currently valued at around $3.14 billion.

However, this growing industry also allows for the development of accessories and paraphernalia associated with marijuana. Products such as pipes, papers, and vaporizers are expanding as well, as well as the development of marijuana-friendly coffee shops that offer a social side to marijuana use.

6) Medical Use Outsells Recreational Use

The main reason behind the development of the legalization of marijuana is because of the medical benefits that have been attributed to its use.

Medical patients who use marijuana for medicinal purposes buy more than recreational users, and they can often benefit from additional benefits that others will not receive. For example, Colorado waivers the 10% state tax that is put on marijuana purchases, which means it is a much cheaper option for medical users, rather than recreational buyers.

7) Health Benefits

Research has found that Cannabidiol can stop cancer cells from developing by turning off the Id-1 gene, which may prevent cancer from spreading. This has been the motivation behind many of the legalization campaigns that have been successful across the US.

As cannabidiol is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, it is often used as a form of pain relief for spasms and contractions in the joints of those who have multiple sclerosis.

In addition, research has found that smoking cannabis helps to reduce the tremors that those with Parkinson’s disease often suffer from and can help to improve their sleep. Many of these studies worldwide have attributed to the increased legalization of the drug.

8) You Can Enjoy It in Many Different Ways

Many people assume that you can only consume marijuana through smoking, but there are several ways to do it. While smoking is the most common, you can also eat and drink cannabis to feel the effects.

9) It Has A Long History

Cannabis has been one of the strongest natural fibers to exist for approximately 10-12,000 years and has previously been used for rope, clothing, and as nutritious seeds. Ancient text refers to cannabis as being used to relieve conditions such as malaria and constipation, as well as for its hallucinogenic qualities.

10) There Has Never Been A Weed Induced Overdose

Unlike with other forms of recreational drugs, there has never been a weed overdose reported. In order to overdose on cannabis, you would have to consume around 15,000 pounds of the substance within 15 minutes. Therefore, while it is impossible to consume that much in one go, marijuana overdoses are unlikely to become a concern any time soon.

Debates surrounding marijuana have become increasingly controversial in recent years, but through the development of research findings, the use of the drug is becoming increasingly accepted by society, both for its medicinal benefits as well as for recreational use.

Marijuana Compounds Shown to Protect the Nervous System Against MS

 | Naturalsociety | July 1st 2014

marijuana_handA study published in a well-respected medical journal, the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology, recently disclosed that the active chemicals in marijuana can help treat multiple sclerosis and similar diseases. The active compounds, namely THC and CBD, are able to do so by inhibiting inflammation of the spinal chord and brain. This is not all THC and CBD can do, though.

The study abstract reads:

“Cannabinoids, the Cannabis constituents, are known to possess anti-inflammatory properties but the mechanisms involved are not understood. Here we show that the main psychoactive cannabinoid, Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and the main nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD), markedly reduce the Th17 phenotype which is known to be increased in inflammatory autoimmune pathologies such as Multiple Sclerosis.”

The Healing Properties of Cannabis

THC, or, tetrahydrocannabinol, offers multiple medical benefits. This is also the part of marijuana that makes users feel ‘high’ or ‘stoned.’ But while the psychoactive component deters individuals from accepting the plant, people should know that marijuana has been shown to relieve pain and spasticity in patients who suffer from MS, and so much more. The vilified plant is also known for reducing cancer cells, relieving chronic pain, and halting seizures. It is no wonder that companies want to patent certain chemical properties in Marijuana.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is just one of over 400 active compounds in the plant. CBD is the plant compound in marijuana or cannabis that offers medical effects but without the “high”. It can even counter the psychoactive effects of THC. After decades in which only high-THC Cannabis was available, CBD-rich strains are now being grown by and for medical users. Hemp, which is also derived from the cannabis plant, is one example of very low THC levels and high CBD levels – which is just one reason hemp should have never been made illegal. (Though the 2014 farm bill does legalize industrial hemp).

The list of medicinal qualities of just this one compound, CBD, is extremely long:

For example, CBD helps with:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Cancer
  • Depression
  • Acne
  • Glaucoma
  • Stress
  • Brain Injury
  • Obesity
  • Osteoperosis
  • Diabetes
  • Nausea
  • And hundreds more

While more than half of the American pubic supports the legalization of marijuana use, and rightly so, since it comes with a host of medicinal properties, marijuana smoke can also be detrimental to health, so alternative ways of administering marijuana or ‘weed’ are advised. While about 20 states already have legalized marijuana dispensaries, others drag their feet.

Dr. J. Michael Bostwick, a psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., explains that the classification of marijuana as a ‘drug’ was primarily political and ignored more than 40 years of scientific research, which has shown that cellular receptors for marijuana’s active ingredients are present throughout the body. These political maneuvers are outlined expressly in a lengthy report by Bostwick.

As with any herb, there are contraindications, but the benefits of marijuana seem to far outweigh any concerns. It should be legalized in more states due to medicinal benefits and basic rights.

4 Real Stories of Cannabis’ Life-Saving Benefits

 | Naturalsociety | March 23rd 2014

CannabisWe spend a lot of time discussing the latest in scientific research when it comes to all healing plants, and of late the natural health world has had a lot to say about cannabis. New studies are indicating the plant and its constituents are useful in treating a myriad of conditions, all without the side effects of conventional medicines. But these studies only go so far in bringing home the true power of the plant. Real-life  stories, where marijuana was used to treat someone who had no other hope, are testaments to just how important it is that we keep marijuana reform momentum moving.

While there are numerous real-life stories out there—many of which that will tug at your heart strings—here are just 4 of our favorites:

  • 1. Cashy Hyde – Cashy Hyde was only two years old when he was diagnosed with a deadly stage 4 brain tumor. Going through conventional chemotherapy treatment and stem cell therapy, he began wasting away. He stopped eating, would vomit throughout the day, and his parents were told he would die. It was only after they began adding cannabis oil to his feeding tube that he began eating again and restored some quality to his short life. While Cashy ultimately died from the invasive brain tumor, his parents credit cannabis with keeping him alive as long as he was and for giving him a reason to smile in his final days.
  • 2. Cheryl Shuman – Celebrity Cheryl Shuman was a cancer patient taking 27 different pharmaceutical drugs each day. She used a morphine pump and, at her worst, a colostomy bag. She described herself as a “vegetable” in those days. After only 90 days of cannabis use, she was healed and back to work full time. Now, Shuman operates the Beverly Hills Cannabis Club and has been featured on the talk show circuit, spreading the word about the healing powers of marijuana.
  • 3. Charlotte Figi – We first featured Charlotte earlier this year when her name became synonymous with the miraculous powers of cannabis. Suffering from a seizure disorder that could not be cured, doctors wanted to put her in a medical coma. Many of the hundreds of seizures she experienced each week of her little life nearly killed her. At age 5, she was given the opportunity to use cannabis oil under Colorado’s medical marijuana laws. Her seizures stopped immediately. Now, she is a completely different child.
  • 4. Kristen Courtney – With numerous diagnoses including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, Kristen Courtney was on a cocktail of 40 different medications. She was bedridden for four years for her various medical problems, and her family believed she would certainly die. After a little over a month of juicing raw cannabis, her pain disappeared and she began to heal.

There are countless other stories like this out there, stories where the vilified marijuana has worked to preserve people’s quality of life and even save their lives. As long as the plant remains illegal, we are depriving the sickest among us from a chance at life.
