The Five Steps to Shamanic Manifesting

Jon RasmussenContributor

I offer this five-step guide for the process of deliberately manifesting any experience into your reality. This can be used for, or the results can be anything from having more playtime, to having more rainforests, to world peace. Just remember that you cannot create an experience for somebody else, but if enough are asking for the same experience it will be shared and the influence can spread. Also remember that if this process is not working well for you, it is likely the result of unconscious beliefs, mythic, and energetic influences that are sabotaging your efforts. A quick trip to your local shaman for a session and some mythic homework and belief work should help tremendously.

Step 1. Acknowledge and Bless the Contrast

Acknowledge those aspects of your current experience, “reality”, that you do not want,  “the contrast“ and decide what you do want, the preferred experience. Part of the acknowledgment is to be grateful for the clarity that the contrast has given you and that overall it enriches your life experience. This is where the great teachings of compassion, unconditioned love, and non-judgment are helpful so that we do not get trapped in the role of victim of the contrasting experience, but instead we recognize our role in creating it for our own benefit and often the benefit of others who have played a role in our contrast or in whose contrast we have played a role.

Step 2. Appreciate what You Can about your Current Experience

Find all the aspects of your current experience that you can appreciate and focus your attention on them. You will know that you are doing this well when you feel good. If you are not feeling good then change whatever you are thinking about, looking at, listening to, acting on, or talking about in that moment until you find that thought, word, action or observation that feels better. It may take some time and effort to work your way from feeling really bad, for example anger, to feeling really good, for example bliss, about any particular subject, but each step makes the next step available. So pat yourself on the back if for example you go from rage to frustrated, or frustrated to pessimistic because the next steps will be hopeful, optimistic, satisfied, cheerful and so on. If you are having trouble working your way up that scale on a particular subject, for example politics, then switch your attention to a completely different subject that you can more easily work up the scale with, relationships for example; because as long as you are feeling better about any subject you are allowing experiences regarding all other subjects to improve for you.

Step 3. Find and Feel the Core of Your Desired Experience

Determine the core of what you really want and start imagining what that experience will feel like. For example with regards to the subject of relationship, you may at first think you want a particular person to become your partner, but the core of what you want is to experience unconditional love and support, pleasure, laughter, and security with someone that you find attractive. To the extent that you can be more specific about the package your experience will come in without feeling any resistance, then imagine how the specifics will look and feel. If you begin to feel resistance however, then it is essential to back off to a more general experience that feels good.

Step 4. Become Unattached to the Outcome

Release your attachment to receiving what you want. In other words, find the attitude that it is okay if you do not receive what you have asked for so that you can keep your attention focused elsewhere. This is a paradox, but it allows what you want to manifest more quickly. The reason is that if you are noticing that what you have asked for is not here yet, you are essentially asking for the absence of it and canceling out your original feeling-based request or prayer. The Universe takes time to orchestrate all of the synchronicities and events necessary to give you the experience you have asked for.

Step 5. Be Open to the Unexpected

The Universe always delivers the experience you have asked for and it may be in a completely surprising or un-expected way or manifest form. In order to receive the experience that is waiting at your door, it is essential that you remain energetically open to whatever package or mode of delivery it comes in. The best way to do that is by repeating step 2. And remember to go deep within your feelings, your body, and your heart with a sense of self-love and therefore love for all that is, to determine the core of your desire and remain open to the wonder and beauty of this Universal gift. In the meantime, be accepting of all and make the choices and take the actions that feel inspired.

*Note that getting into a meditative or quiet state of mind and body and/or the use of rhythmic drumbeats or rattling (4 beats per second), chanting, rhythmic movement, yoga, physical pleasure and relaxation, or other methods of getting into a pleasant altered state of consciousness during or before can greatly increase the effectiveness of aligning your thoughts and emotions with your desired experience.

Are You a Shaman?

Jon RasmussenContributor

The actual word, Shaman, comes from the medicine people of Siberia and has been widely adopted throughout the western cultures to describe someone who facilitates a coming into power and freedom, which is often referred to as healing, and which fully uncovers our core nature of love, compassion, and joy. Ideally, someone who practices shamanism has been trained in techniques and initiated in a way that allows them to safely and effectively mediate between the physical and non-physical worlds in order to bring about some desired change on all layers of our being: literal/physical, psycho-spiritual/mind, mythic, and essential.

While western medicine diagnoses or maps and intervenes only on the physical or psychological layers, the shaman engages the healing process on all four layers and preferably intervenes at the essential energetic layer and maps the new healed state at the mythic layer. So there are shamans who will stop the bleeding, set bones, prescribe herbs, and help change thoughts and beliefs, but then they will help empower you and help you to create more desirable experiences in the future, no longer repeating the same old patterns and wounds that you or your ancestors have experienced.

The shaman is a healer, a storyteller, a myth-maker, a wisdom keeper, a visionary, and a technician of the sacred mediating between the worlds.

Spritual JourneyShe calls on all the forces of nature, both physical and non-physical to help her do her work. She brings balance back into any situation by being in balance and dialogue with nature herself. Because of her preparation and relationship with the forces of the universe, there is very little for her to actually do, she just has to be and hold a safe and non-judging space for the healing and visioning work to take place.

The shaman sees no separation of matter and spirit the way we do in the west and many eastern traditions. To the shaman, all matter is animated and there is nowhere that spirit is not. For example there is nothing more spiritual than biology the way it seeks more complex and beautiful forms.

The Work and Training of a Shaman

The shaman uses metaphor to describe the work, but in contrast to the way westerners use metaphor, the shaman knows that behind the metaphor is a real force that can be summoned and a process that can be engaged to make real changes in the physical and psycho-spiritual layers. An example of the use of metaphor is the four step process that I have learned from the Inka tradition through the Fourwinds Society, which follows:

  • The Way of the Healer. This is represented by the serpent that teaches us to shed the way we hold the wounds of the past the way she sheds her skin, which is all at once. This makes us available to power and knowledge. Even western medicine has borrowed this metaphor with the serpents wound around a staff and sprouting wings. The shamanic process associated with this we refer to as the Illumination process, which is like and energetic enema that cleanses the chakras and luminous body and replaces the heavy energies with the light of our true nature. The forces that the shaman is connected via initiation rites in this step are a lineage of healers, or Hampe in Quechua, that are the Earthkeepers from the past that assist us in our healing process. The healer’s luminous body is also given rites of protection, seeing, and harmony with the organizing principles and archangels of the three worlds, subconscious, conscious, and superconscious.
  • The Way of the Warrior. This is the way of the peaceful warrior represented by the jaguar who teaches us to leap beyond fear and violence and the old myths and stories that keep us bound to the same patterns that we and our ancestors have been repeating and that inform the way that we live and die. We clear ourselves of the way that death slowly stalks our spirit taking our power until we are more dead than alive. Instead we allow ourselves to be claimed by life and our own inherent power to create our own myths and follow our own footsteps, no longer needing to engage in battle, internally with ourselves, or externally. The shamanic processes associated with this step are the extraction process, cutting chords, and the death rites, which are really the life rites. The forces that the shaman is connected to are the lineage of the Daykeepers, or Pampamesayoq in Quechua, that are the bone setters, midwives, herbalists, and keepers of the calendars and stone altars such as Stonehenge.
  • The Way of the Sage. This is the way of the ancient wisdom and the wisdom to come that is not only orally passed down but that we are able to remember directly. This step is represented by the hummingbird that teaches us to reclaim our true nature and passion for life. Here we learn to manifest, appreciate, and be unattached. We shed our identities and teachers so that we have nothing left to defend and can now be truly free to create and work for the joy of it, drinking the nectar of life all along the way. Here we learn to enjoy the journey and the process, even the contrast, and that the impossible can be made possible. This is where we stop having “spiritual experiences” because we are no long physical beings having a spiritual experience, but instead spiritual beings having a physical experience. We learn to master time and journey into the past and future to retrieve lost or compromised parts of our energy and change our perception and to nudge our destiny by re-aligning our energy with who we desire to become. We learn to keep a secret even from ourselves so that life remains exhilarating (much like you do when you go to a movie and purposely keep the secret from yourself that it is just a script with a director and actors so that you can get fully into the drama). And finally we learn to be invisible, to blend in with our village to remain free and safe. The shamanic processes associated with this step are the Soul Retrieval and Destiny Retrieval. The forces that the shaman is connected to are the lineage of Wisdomkeepers, or Altomesayoq in Quechua, who keep and share the wisdom teachings that come to us from the Source.
  • The Way of the Visionary. This is represented by the Eagle and Condor who teach us to look at the big picture and be driven by a vision. We put the cart way before the horse and use our creative power to dream a world into being for the benefit of our children’s children. Here we come from a place of total stillness and unity consciousness and we dare to make the possible more probable by tracking our vision well into the future. The processes associated with this step are to acknowledge what we have identified with, dis-identified with, transcended, and ultimately included as Creator. And here we do a lot of shadow work as well to dig deep into the subconscious to that which may still be eluding us and where we are wasting energy in a secret battle. We do this shadow work to ensure that the dreaming the world into being is done without the resistance of our own hidden judgments and personal agendas. The forces that the shaman is connected to are the lineage of the Earthkeepers, or Kuraqaquyeq in Quechua, who are the archangels and guardians of our galaxy. Two additional rites have been brought forth in recent years and passed on to us by the Q’ero and they include the Starkeepers, or Maillku in Quechua, who are the stewards of the time to come, the next evolution of our species. This connection allows us to more easily process the contrasting events of our life at the essential layer instead of the physical or psychological so that our bodies actually react differently than before. And a final rite of initiation was just introduced in June 2006 by the Q’ero Laika for transmission from human to human and this is the Creator rites, which are called the Taitanchis Ranti in Quechua. And this connects us to the stewardship of all creation in the Universe. This allows us to more easily realize our true Godliness and role in the creation process.

Shamanism is as profound and powerful as it sounds and very practical and pragmatic.

The first shaman was the one who kept the fire burning in the village, then learned the migration patterns of the animals and the cycles of nature to better feed the village. That grew into the knowledge of plant medicines and anatomy and physiology, the storytelling and psychological work, and the journeying and dialogue with the non-physical worlds, to improve the quality of life of the villagers. At the same time, the shaman shows up with a sense of the poetry and love of life, a kind of love that is unconditional and open.

One of the greatest goals to a person of power, knowledge, and freedom is to live fully in the moment of now, to be fully present as opposed to preparing or waiting for the next experience to happen. I like to say that life is a series of moments, and you are either in them or not; and life is a series of experiences that you either ask for deliberately and consciously or by default.

You Too May Be a Shaman

Most people would think of shamans solely as those medicine people of the indigenous or primary cultures of the world living on the outer edge of some remote jungle, desert, or mountain village and born into a long line of healers, and unless that is your story, you cannot be a shaman. I held that belief for years and it kept me from realizing and fulfilling my destiny sooner rather than later, until I was in my thirties. The truth is that those are indeed the shamans/medicine people/healers of unbroken traditions and lineages going back as far as can be imagined, and thankfully are still around; some of who maintained the powerful teachings and techniques learned, practiced, and expanded upon over hundreds of thousands of years. And the very good news for our western cultures that live in villages of millions now is that we too are worthy and capable of being shamans if we so choose. I am one of several thousands of westerners who have made that choice and have taken the time and effort to become trained and initiated as a safe and effective shaman.

Shamanism has many forms and is generally associated with the healing techniques and worldview of the primary cultures of the Earth, the cultures that have survived the longest, and of which some remain largely untouched by western worldviews, mythologies, and techniques.

True shamanism can be defined as an open system that is non-hierarchical and un-institutionalized. The true shaman is non-judgmental, has nothing to defend, and sees no separation between spirit and matter, understanding that all of nature, all-that-is in the Universe is benignly supportive and is essentially only one Source of energy with multitudes of both physical and non-physical expressions [and what the non-shamanic perspectives call good or “godly”, is the full connection and letting through of the one Source stream of energy, and what is called bad or “evil”, is the disconnection, cutting off/blocking of the one Source energy, like a light switch in varying degrees where there is not an independent source of darkness].

The shaman is intimately connected with and makes use of all that is available on the Earth and beyond in a relationship that benefits all parties. The shaman lives life from the perspective of the co-creator (script writer/director), the conscious player or witness (actor), and the witness that has chosen to forget for the moment in order to enjoy the drama (audience), moving between each at will. Hence, the focus of shamanism is on the very practical attainment of getting more out of this life right here and right now. Whatever it is that brings the most enjoyment, fulfillment, exhilaration, and love of life; the result of which is expansion/growth of all that is. Many systems say that growth is the purpose of life, like a school that needs to be struggled through in order to graduate to a better place, whereas the shaman sees the purpose of life as simply joy, one big recess, and in the desire we have to continue to come back and play here, growth and graduation happens naturally and joyfully.

The true goals of the shamanic techniques are to obtain total freedom and power; where each individual obtains the level of freedom from any past or present influences on all levels of being in order to be deliberate, clear, and conscious about what she/he is asking the Universe to create in her/his experience, and, where she/he has the power/energy to remain clear and free regardless of external influences, if anything, their energy is the primary influence. Examples of these influences are: the energies of past wounds and traumas that are carried in the energy body/soul over lifetimes or from ancestors which then influence the mythologies we operate under and hence our dominant thoughts and beliefs that live in our psyche/minds; and, the influences of the people and events that we witness in our physical reality and who sometimes also influence us on the energetic, mythic, and psychic layers.

The shamans recognize that Creation is not done, and that the ultimate act of power and love is to participate in the creative process. As this becomes the practice of the person of power and knowledge, the idea of the victim-perpetrator-rescuer trap is transcended completely. The need for both external and internal battles then disappears and a world of peace, beauty, harmony, exhilaration, joy, and new levels of expansion/creation becomes the dominant collective experience.

The person who engages in the healing path of the true shaman is leading the way for the eventual and inevitable healing and evolution of the entire human species. A person can engage in the healing techniques of shamanism with the help of a trained and clear shaman to become a person of power and knowledge as described regardless of what they most enjoy being or doing for work. And, in some cases, that person discovers that they too would enjoy most doing the work of a shaman. In either case, because shamanism is an open system, one need not give up any work or belief system that serves them in order to engage in this ultimately practical and powerful work.

Shamans recognize that there are four layers to our existence, each one being informed by the next.

  1. The Literal physical reality, all of your experiences i.e. health, work, relationships, events, etc. in your current body/mind,
  2. The Psycho-spiritual, all of your thoughts and beliefs both conscious and unconscious, i.e. your dominant broadcasting/asking that creates/informs your literal experiences (layer 1.),
  3. The Mythic, all of the familial/ancestral, religious, cultural, archetypal, and personal imperatives that are largely unconscious and inform how we think and our habits of thought (layer 2.), i.e. the you shoulds and shouldn’ts, cans and can’ts, or since you are this sex, religion, family, these are your limitations, obstacles, or opportunities.
  4. The Essential energetic, who you really are even after this body is gone, i.e. your soul, aura and chakras, luminous energy body and wheels of light, etc., which when allowed to operate freely will process energies of events and experiences in the moment then let the heavy/toxic energies go into the Earth where they become mulched. This layer informs the rest of the layers and has been with us for lifetimes, and/or carries the energies of our ancestors through the morphogenetic field of the DNA. Just like in the physical body, if we didn’t eliminate all the remains of the processed energy from our food into the toilet where it eventually becomes fertilizer, we would become toxic and physically ill, and likewise when we don’t let the heavy toxic energies from processed traumas, etc. go to the earth, they build up in our energy body and influence us in ways we would rather avoid. Most people have been taught to hold onto those energies, i.e. don’t express your anger, don’t forget and forgive, don’t cry, always be afraid; instead of getting angry in the moment, grieving in the moment, using fear in the moment, and then letting it go. It is this layer that becomes visible when you are completely clear of past energies and in your power, i.e. a clean slate or being like children again, reborn, and hence you would be painted with a halo around your head; people would notice your vibrant glow. And instead of being informed by what happened to you 20 years ago, or 20 minutes ago, or 20 lifetimes ago, you are being informed by what you are wanting to be, do, or have next, and it is completely your choice.

Many of the wonderful modern western and eastern and even energy medicine modalities intervene primarily at the 1st and 2nd layers whether they use a physical technology or an energy force. For example, you can get surgery, massage, acupuncture, reiki, thetahealing, change your relationships, work out and eat well, change your job or relationships, and so on to affect change on the first layer, the literal physical. And/or you can think positive, use affirmations, read all the books, meditate, pray, use all forms of psychotherapy, hypnosis, “the secret”, thetahealing, and so on to affect change at the 2nd layer, the psycho-spiritual. And much progress can be made by all this work on the outer 2 layers, and can even eventually work its way down to heal the mythic and energetic as well with enough time and effort. So, an ailment can be cured, and/or the symptoms, i.e. pain, can be eliminated, and a tumor can be removed very quickly, or a psychosis medicated, or an addiction avoided by abstinence and support, but if not addressed at the essential energetic blueprint and mythic layers, they have a tendency to re-express later or in different forms. Also, many forms of psychic healing or reading and consultation are often just reading/diagnosing the essential energetic and/or mythic, and psycho-spiritual aspects, helping you to understand on a deep level, but may not be changing it or empowering you to change it on all levels quickly.

Shamans avoid diagnosis, which can actually further lock in the problem and make it worse. The idea is to just clear the energy once and for all and stay away from the story. All of these modalities and medicines have their strengths and effectiveness for any given person and time, and, are part of an integral approach to healing; and a shaman will encourage you to continue with what is most effective and necessary in the moment.

Shamans know that change can be far quicker and gentler if first engaged at the source, the Essential energetic and the mythic. For example, it’s much easier to heal a heart condition on the energetic before it becomes a full-blown heart attack; or a relationship condition before it becomes the 4th marriage, etc. Then engage in the work of the mythic, and whatever modalities of the first 2 layers you find most effective and the results are much easier to come by. It’s a matter of putting the horse before the cart. In the non-shamanic modalities, much of the healing work is based on the idea that if we can understand it, then we can heal it, but the shamans say heal it first, then understand it later. And shamans also say, if you’re having a heart attack, or got bit by a dog, then by all means get to the hospital and treat it right away. Then come to the shaman to find out why your heart stopped or why you crossed paths with the frightened or rabid dog, and do the healing necessary to make sure you don’t have that experience again in this life or the next.

The Evolutionary Leap Has Begun – What it Means for You

Jon RasmussenContributor

The Human species has begun an evolutionary leap that is exponentially more abrupt than any known previous leaps – and it is happening to you. It is the work of the Shamans to help us navigate this extreme course.

The prophecies of my Q’ero shaman lineage speak of the evolutionary leap that humanity is undergoing at this time.  And this evolutionary leap is unprecedented not only because of our current level of awareness and understanding as a species, but also because the overall trajectory of all previous evolutionary leaps is exponential.  This means that each leap has happened sooner and quicker than the previous.  My teachers speak of the fact that this leap isn’t just happening from one generation to the next, but within our generation.

Modern science and medicine is barely scratching the surface of the possibility that we can change our existing DNA and bodies within one lifetime.  But modern science is only coming to a full understanding of just 5% of the known or theoretical Universe.  The other 95% of everything is “dark” or unknown, and currently un-measurable.

Shamans not only see into that unknown, but actually have techniques to work with it and apply it to facilitate change in the 5% known experience.  We see that the 95% of “dark energy and matter” as modern science calls it, and causay as the Q’ero call it, informs the 5% of the energy and matter that make up our conscious and sensory experiences.  It is essentially a working and changeable blueprint for reality.

With this understanding, we can see that the evolutionary leap in our human bodies and minds as a species is and has been preceded by accelerating changes in the energetic blueprint that are being facilitated in many humans right now. And it is helpful not only to know that this is possible, but to help explain and deal with the implications in the most graceful way possible.

With all evolutionary leaps, one can only imagine that it comes with a certain amount of upheaval, shedding of many facets of the old paradigm, and varying degrees of discomfort, confusion, and even downright fear.  It is our work as shamans to help humanity through it all with healing, vision, comforting, clarity, and even celebration.

The main thing to remember is that the you that is  95% of who you really are is not limited to this lifetime, this body, this mind, and this story- or perhaps even this planet or this Universe.  In the English language, the you the feels like you and comprises your conscious awareness, personality, and tons of information and “coding” is called the Soul. In Sanskrit you’re called the Aura and Chakras, in Italian your called the Anima.  Every language has a name for the you that is really you.  So physical life and death, bodies, brains, and DNA are all relatively and extremely temporary vehicles by which you play in the theater of the Universe once again, and again, and again, and again.

Shamans understand that evolution and expansion are very desired aspects of the consciousness within and throughout all aspects of this theater for the simple reason that boredom is worse than annihilation. In other words we, or consciousness in general and in all forms and formless, keep evolving in to greater and greater complexity to keep it interesting and to see where we can take it through the creative process.  And of course as a part of it all there are fits and starts, fear and back peddling, dead ends, destruction and construction, millennium of rest, and exhilaration filled leaps and bounds.

So if you are feeling like the old ways of looking at things and doing things is no longer cutting it, and/or you know children and adults that do not fit our current understanding, lifestyle, and constructs, then you are likely witnessing the evolutionary leap in progress.  You may also being experiencing nothing short of the personal and collective revolution/upheaval that often accompanies such leaps, and which often comes with the extremes of feelings and emotions such as fear, pain, love, and pleasure.  And to the extent that you can allow your mind to go along with it, to blow open and expand, to accept the unknown and the unknowable, to surrender to the inevitable evolution of who you really are and all that comes with it, then you may actually enjoy this part of the ride.

Call on your shamans to help you gracefully and quickly jettison any unnecessary baggage and stories that will no longer be necessary or useful in the new paradigm, and that would only hurt worse to be ripped away the hard way.  And together let’s align the 95% blueprint with the ideal vision that we manifest by dreaming it into being as co-creators of the Universe(s).

In Love and Service,

Jon Rasmussen

How to Be a Man in a Woman’s World – Re-Empowering the Feminine

Jon RasmussenContributor

My entire life and work has been dedicated to the re-empowerment of the Feminine – as my Q’ero teachers call it the Pachakuti, which translates to world turning right side up.  Meaning that the Masculine has been the majority in charge of Government, Business, Education, Health, Resources, and all manner of policy decisions around the world for many centuries; and it is now time that the Feminine re-takes charge resulting in almost immediate and lasting solutions to most problems on the planet.  I have written and spoken about this extensively in my book and blogs as it gets right to the core of what needs to happen, and is happening now.

The majority of people who’ve come to me for shaman sessions have been women and to some extent gay men – essentially those for whom the Feminine is the dominant expression. But, I’ve been told on a number of occasions to address and work more with my fellow straight men to help this process of the Return of the Feminine along.  And while this talk focuses on straight men, it really is applicable to all people for whom the Masculine is the dominant expression including straight women, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender.  So to keep the sentence structure as simple as possible, I will often just use the word men with full acknowledgment and respect for all expressions of the masculine.

Two Kinds of Men, and One is Ready to Step Up – The One with the Real Cojones

I have been fortunate to work with a number of willing men on and individual, and couple’s, and small group basis.  But, there are basically two kinds of men:  Fear-driven men, and courageous men.  And, in my opinion the world needs more courageous men.

I confess I have very little patience for fear-driven men; they are the bullies, the greedy, the unkind, the transactional “friends”, and the ones who want power in order to manipulate and control others to fulfill their own ends by any means.  They are the fanatics, fascists, and extremists who never change in spite of changing evidence, and would sooner blow the whole thing up than change or compromise.  Some have come to me for healing, but it often turned out only to gain more of the kind of narcissistic power they would use to further their agenda of more control and personal “safety”, or to just feel better about the choices they make so they can continue the folly.

Basically, no amount of healing can make up for a person’s free choices; and by their nature, these types of men usually don’t want to change anyway as they get most of the spoils and attention already – except of course when they lose in a big way.  It is always a choice to heal the easy way now, or heal after being crushed and, in the words of my teacher, “mulched.”  I don’t judge those men, but I rather not hang out with them – discernment is a valuable practice.  Someday they will figure out that they are really not getting to where they want to be; and when they are really ready to change, I’m ready to help them.

What a Courageous Man Does

But right now, I have a message for the courageous men who will hear it and act on it.  It is time for you, my brothers to go forth even in fear, but with courage, and pledge your service to the Feminine – supporting and encouraging women and girls to dream big, follow their wild nature, take charge and feel safe.  I want you to learn to discern the difference between the Masculine and Feminine in women and men and in yourself, so that you can encourage and cultivate the Feminine.  Know the difference between the fear-driven warrior masculine and the courageous warrior masculine and cultivate the latter.  Here are some helpful suggestions:

  •  In the face of uncertainty, do not cower in indecisiveness and paralysis.
  •  Move forward with courage and compassion with a broad vision for the benefit and betterment of the whole; particularly if you are a business leader or politician.
  • In politics, do not support nor vote for those dominated by the fear-driven masculine.
  • Make peace with the Feminine that is Nature.  Recognize that you do not exist without her.
  • Remember that a woman gave birth to you, just as the mother Earth gives birth to the land, oceans, plants, animals, and ever growing complexity that makes life worth living in the first place.
  • Honor the feminine within yourself, by acknowledging and expressing your full emotion, and putting your heart above your head. Follow your heart, and let your head figure out how.
  • Serve women the way the Sun serves the Earth – unconditionally, gently, warmly, consistently, reliably, and with enduring energy and light.
  • Ask for nothing in return, and receive unconditionally all the beauty and nectar that she offers.
  • Even when you are afraid of her and her wild unpredictable nature, and even when possibly facing certain death, never again suppress her, abuse her, or violate her.
  • Never take from her more than she is willing to offer, never give to her more than she is asking to receive.
  • Realize how true this is for women, and for the mother Earth and all of her children.   This is a Feminine-based world – she is everywhere.
  • Stop the fear-driven men from cutting down the jungles and overusing resources out of greed.
  • Do not adhere to principle when it is unproductive; yielding is not weakness.
  • Do not protect your ego or try to save face.  Do not posture.  Accept defeat or compromise gracefully.
  • Stop the fear-driven men from cutting down girls and woman by refusing them their equal rights, education, pay, and opportunity.
  • Remember this applies to Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender individuals as well.  Don’t forget that, as the Feminine is suppressed in every possible way in the fear-driven warrior masculine controlled world.
  • And you courageous man, don’t be fooled and brainwashed by the clever fear-driven man.  Don’t let them use ignorance and lies to further their agenda. If they threaten with violence, respond with crushing force to stop them, then teach and heal them if they are asking.

“The Meek Shall Inherit”, but It’s Not About Being Weak or Defenseless

The Feminine is not weak, nor non-violent.  But her violence does not come from fear, nor is it unwarranted, or based on an agenda of control and oppression.  Her violence is natural instinct to protect and to create new experience, as a volcano creates new land, or a jaguar protects her young.  Wear the sword on your lap, and choose not to use it unless your life is threatened by the fear-driven warrior masculine; then use it with gusto.  Encourage women and girls to do the same.  Next time you see a woman being threatened by a man, stop him in every way you can.  Teach all of this to your boys and young men as well.

The Courageous Man Wins

Be grateful to be chosen and asked by a woman to help her and please her with all the gifts you have.  And if you are not asked, then do not complain.  Find other ways to be useful in the world. Follow your own heart and instinct, the feminine within you, from a place of compassion and connection to the whole.  Your life will be better than you have ever known or can ever imagine if you follow this way of the Earth, humanity, and all of nature.  For unlike the fear-driven warrior masculine, the Feminine has no malice, is non-hierarchical, is nurturing and compassionate the way the Earth takes your waste and gives you food in return, shelters and warms you, and allows you to choose freely how you want to live and die without judgment.

So don’t worry about a world run by the Feminine – you and she were fine in that relationship for millions of years.  Our troubles only started when we taught to become antagonistic towards her based on a very funky mythology.  She will take you back from this relatively short detour, but you must honor and respect her and be grateful to serve her; and when on occasion, the wild feminine nature causes you real fear – as it should – just be a courageous man and continue to move forward with unconditional love, gratitude, and kindness.

How Indigenous Cultures View and Deal with Stress

Jon RasmussenContributor

Stress Defined

As a modern shaman who has studied with the world’s oldest indigenous cultures and their medicine men and women, I would like to share with you my observations regarding the subject of stress.  Stress is essentially defined as a response to fear.    The stress response within the body is designed to support the natural fight, flight, or freeze reactions that are necessary for survival in a very real and usually short-lived danger.  The response creates hormonal reactions that increase focus, awareness, reaction time, and blood flow primarily to muscles and sensory organs.  In man’s natural state, as with the indigenous cultures, this response to a clear and present danger is considered to be good, normal, and healthy so much so that there is now equivalent word for stress in the primary languages.  Bad stress only occurs when the stress response continues for longer than is necessary with significant effects on overall health.

Good Stress = Real Fear, Bad Stress = Assumed Fear

The stress that we think of and experience more often in our modern society is an unhealthy aberration of the otherwise natural and healthy response to fear.  The basic reason for this that we have created fears within our own minds about things that are not happening and may not actually happen, and we keep ourselves in that mindset for prolonged periods.  A simple way to compare the indigenous and modern relationship to fear is this:

“See tiger…run!” Vs. “Suspect there may be a tiger nearby…run”!

The Stress Free Worldview of Indigenous Cultures

The fundamental worldviews and relationships with all of nature and even time itself, allows the indigenous person to stay relaxed until that which should be feared is upon them.  This is not to say that indigenous people do not plan carefully nor do all that is necessary in a reasonable time frame to thrive. But indigenous people see themselves as an integral part of a whole system that has evolved to support all of its elements to thrive.  They have default unity consciousness with all-that-is.  Therefore, their default frame of mind is well-being and security, with real fear only showing up from time to time and in short bursts.  Modern man sees themselves apart from nature and mostly in an antagonistic relationship.  One of my Q’ero elder teachers once said that white man owns the land, but time owns them; whereas, the Indio is “owned” or stewards the land, but they own time.  He would say, “Why do today, that which will take care of itself in three or four days.”

Learn From, Call Upon, and Embody Nature

Indigenous people also observe the behavior of animals to remind them of their own true instincts and wisdom.  For example, when a gazelle is chased by a lion and manages to escape, the gazelle shakes their entire body to relieve the stress response and reset the body chemistry.  The gazelle goes back to its relaxed state of eating grass as if nothing happened.  Likewise, humans can choose to “shake off” a stressful event in order to come back into healthy balance and peace of mind.

The Story You Tell Becomes Your Reality

Indigenous people have continually remembered that the perception they hold in their mind becomes their reality. And if they want their reality to be free of unwarranted fear and therefore stress, they simply need to choose the perception that they are safe.  Modern people have largely forgotten that they create their own experience of reality through their perceptual states, and therefore choose to be in fear around any number of potentialities, for example, “I will get fired and lose everything if I do not get this project done by the deadline”, or “My spouse will leave me if I fail in any way”, and on and on.

The trick to reducing the unhealthy form of stress is to adopt the indigenous techniques of relating to nature and time in the way that allows you to have the broadest perspective, or 5,000 view of the eagle.  Allow for possibilities that your mind may not be aware of, and practice non-judgment.  If you cannot know for sure that everything will work out alright, then you cannot know for sure that bad things will happen.   By practicing non-judgment, or not knowing for sure if and event is truly imminently  dangerous or not, and allowing for the possibility that time will work in your favor, you will go a long way in eliminating the modern phenomena of unwarranted fear and prolonged unhealthy stress response.

The Art of Prayer – 7 Keys to Intentional Manifesting

Jon RasmussenContributor

Do you know how to pray?  There is more to it than just asking God for something that you want.  In order for a prayer to be answered, it must be done well; it must be mastered.  It is like a novice picking up a guitar and trying to play a song.  If the novice has not learned how to play the guitar, they may get lucky and produce something resembling music, but most likely, the sound will be nothing more than irreconcilable noise.

What would it take to produce the beautiful music you would like to hear out of a guitar? The answer is that in order to consistently create the desired sound from a guitar, you will have to learn and practice the art of playing the guitar.  The laws of physics will not allow you to haphazardly bang away on the strings, and have the vibrations re-compose themselves before they reach your ear.

Likewise, in order for the Universe/God/Nature to answer your prayer, it must receive the precisely accurate and coherent vibrations of the experience that you are asking for. In other words, you have to become good at the art of prayer, if you want it to work well.  Most of the ways that we have been taught how to pray by parents or religion are not very effective.  It is as though they have told us, just pick up the guitar and ask it to play like Jeff Beck, and you just start strumming the strings.  The guitar cannot make up for your lack of skill and your ability to artfully express yourself.  Instead, the instrument is a benign channeler and enhancer of your desire and effort.

This is the way to look at God or that which you are praying to; a benign force that channels and enhances and gives you a manifestation of that artful prayer that you have initiated.  I will share with you the seven keys to mastering the art of prayer.

First Key: Ask for the Experience, Not the Specific Form You Think Will Provide It

Whenever you have a desired experience relative or in contrast to your current experience you have picked up the instrument and begun strumming whether you are aware of it or not.  The trick is to be aware and send your signal, your prayer, artfully.  I speak of experience instead of a literal manifestation because the first key to praying well is to understand that you are not asking for a specific thing, person, or event to come into your life, but you are really asking for the experience that you think a specific thing, person, or event would give you.

Not understanding this key greatly reduces the possibility of your prayer being answered.  Just as thinking that you will enjoy the song from a guitar if an only if the player produces a very specific sequence of notes, and only those notes.  Whereas, if the guitarist were allowed to vary the notes, chords, and timing, she may actually be able to give you the truly enjoyable auditory and emotional experience you want.

A simple example would be that you may desire a warm, loving, and fun relationship, and you are certain that the person you just met is the one to fulfill that desire.  So you may be praying, consciously or not, for that specific person to want to be with you in the same way.  The problems come in when you realize that person is not available or doesn’t seem as interested in you.  Now your signal, or prayer, unconsciously transforms into how you cannot and may never have the relationship experience you desire.  And since that is more the obvious current reality, that signal is pretty clear, and the Universe just keeps giving you that.  You end up with the opposite of what you thought you were praying for.

Also very important here is to  feel and think about how what you are asking for will benefit others as well. It is important to remember the interconnectedness of all of life.  It adds great power to your signal to take into consideration how it will positively effect everyone and everything else.

Second Key:  Feel, Feel, Feel the Experience and Use Ritual to Engage the Body

The second key is that you are able to feel the desired experience even though it is not there yet.  This is a great skill and perhaps the most challenging part of the art.  It requires a honed imagination, and a powerful connection to your body. Just imagining or visualizing is not enough.  You must feel it in your body, both physically and emotionally.

This is very similar to what a great actor or performer must be able to do in order to convince the audience that the drama or part is real.  A great theater artist knows that if at any moment the audience doubts the validity of the role, they have failed in their art.  Likewise, you must fully convince God/All-that-Is, that you have already received the answer to your prayer; that you are already experiencing it.  If you fall back into the role of you current contrasting experience, then your prayer is negated, or indeed swung around completely.

That seems very difficult, in fact almost impossible doesn’t it?  Well perhaps that explains why we are not all capable of composing like Mozart, or painting like Monet, or that most prayers seem to go unanswered.  It wouldn’t be an art, if it didn’t require that you through all that you are, and all that you are capable of into it.

This is where the shamanic arts of ritual and ceremony, movement and acting out are of great help. The movement, images, and symbols required in ceremonies, vision boards, and role playing bring us into our bodies making it easier to feel the experience and engage our subconscious in the process as well.

Third Key:  Start With Something Easy

One of my first great martial arts teachers put it so well when he said, “the key is not that practice makes perfect, instead you need to understand that practice makes permanent, so only perfect practice makes perfect.”  Like mastering any art, start with small and simple steps first, then gradually increase.  Start by thinking of an experience that really doesn’t matter to you whether you have it or not.  Make it something that you are not currently experiencing any contrast around.   Keep it very much close to the current realm of possibility within a short time period.

Make it easy for the Universe to answer. For example, imagine something like finding something unexpected today.  You might say to yourself, “it would be nice if I was pleasantly surprised today”, and then remember with your mind, your emotion, and your body what it feels like to be pleasantly surprised.  And if you can’t remember, just pretend that you do know how it feels, and feel it.

Do this for a while to build your confidence in yourself and in the Universe.  It has been so long since we have known and practiced this art well, that it may take some time to rebuild the confidence and trust required to continue on toward mastery.  Focus on the successes, and let the rest go.  Focusing our thoughts, attention, emotions, and body on the positive outcomes is also an important part of the process.  It aligns with the inclusiveness of the natural Universe.

Fourth Key: Ask for What You Want, Not for What You Don’t Want

No matter how much you don’t want an experience, or the person, thing, or event that is providing it, the Universe ignores the “not wanting” part.  Just like in physics and the guitar, there is no vibration or note that you can prefix to the note you are about to play, that makes that note come out the opposite.  There is no exclusion switch in reality, only in our language; so looking at an experience and saying “no, no, no, not that!” gets read as “yes, more of that!”  This is in large part because what you are feeling in the moment is the experience you don’t want in spite of the words.

Two-year old children are another great example of this phenomenon. Tell them not to touch something, and they head right for it. The theory is that two-year olds have not yet learned the intricacies of the language.  They instead behave much like the benign natural Universe from whence they very recently came. It isn’t until the age of three or four that they begin to understand that “don’t do that,” means “do something else.”  But that which answers your prayers, doesn’t bother with the trickiness of language, and instead responds to pure vibration.  It really is key that you maintain the vibration of the desired experience, or at least a neutral or no vibration regarding the experience once the prayer has been sent.

Fifth Key: Diversionary Prayer – The Art of Distraction

I learned a little trick when once helping a very strong minded friend get the weather he needed to sail a notoriously difficult stretch in a limited window of time.  He is a very experienced sailor, having circumnavigated the Earth twice single-handed; the kind of guy that has all the answers and advice, and could smell a storm from a thousand miles away, not to mention cheap whiskey, but that’s a whole nother part of the story.

Furthermore, he had sailed that stretch several times already, and was fully prepared for the same wretched experience.  I, of course, in the spirit of the relationship, had already bragged about what a great shaman I was, and how its shamanism 101 to change weather.  If I couldn’t give him a highly unusual south wind and calm seas within a couple of days, I might as well hang up my rattles.

I have always succeeded at changing the weather, but I had never tried teaching a hardened old sailor a new trick.  I needed a diversion.  I figured that if I could get him focusing on praying for something else for the next couple of days, we had a chance with the weather.  So first I got him to remember a day out on the sea when all the conditions where ideally in his favor.  No problem, he had plenty to choose from.  Then I said, “Look, forget about it, regardless of the conditions, you know you are tough enough to make it anyway, so who cares.”

Then I changed the subject to work to help him forget about the weather.  He had a few prospective job possibilities, but he was not very encouraged from the interviews.  I suggested that we do the feeling-based prayer around him having good and gainful work.  I told him to focus on how he always ended up finding work, some way, some how during his tumultuous life.  I used the prayer for work in this instance to take him off of the more entrenched subject of what his sail was going to be like in a couple of days.  And of course it worked, or I wouldn’t be writing about it.

I got the text message from him on his journey a few days later reading – “South wind 7 knots.”  He even calls me his shaman now – at all the bars.  I’m not sure that helped him get a job though; although the next diversion eventually did.  This method is also somewhat analogous to musicians and writers who find themselves blocked going out and focusing on something completely unrelated to their project. It takes an otherwise counter-productive signal, and cuts the power to it, allowing its vicious cycle to dissolve into neutrality.

Sixth Key:  Staying in a Receptive Attitude and Allowing the Mystery, or Feminine over Masculine

Just as in the example above, once I got my friend to send the original prayer, the art shifted into the ability to not get in the way of receiving the desired experience.  It is true that the Universe/God works in mysterious ways. Not only can you not be sure exactly what form your experience will come in, you may not know exactly when either.  So much depends on what the rest of All-that-is is asking for, as well as the momentum required to rearrange things.

Again, it takes mastery to be able to wait and be open to what the Universe has in store.  There is a degree of surrendering that whole spiritual practices and religions are devoted to.  Do you really know the ONLY way you can possibly get your desired experience?  If you really think so, you may already be in trouble.  Like the old master filling the student’s teacup until it overflowed; if you do not empty your teacup first, the Universe cannot fill it.

If you do not tame your mind by reminding it that it has limits, it will not allow you to receive new possibilities, and the possibility of receiving the answer to your prayer.  Your mind can be your best ally in the art of prayer, and it can also be your worst enemy.  Train yourself to let your heart and body rule your mind.  Make the feeling more important than the thought. This is what I have referred to in many articles as the Return of the Feminine as it takes charge over the Masculine.

Like the rudder on a boat, the mind may precisely point in the right direction for where you want to go, but is completely useless unless the boat is propelled forward by your feelings.  And if the boat is allowed to be propelled backwards by feelings of what you don’t want, then the rudder takes you in exactly the wrong direction.

Likewise, allow your emotion and guidance, which comes from you heart and gut, to determine the effectiveness of your mind.  The direction or focus of your thought should be as though you have already reached the goal of your prayer.  This is also true for steering a boat on the ocean.  You must keep your eye on the point of shore that is your desired destination, because simply pointing the rudder in that direction will not account for the influence of the wind and tides.  The rudder must be adjusted to compensate for these external influences.  Likewise, the mind must be flexible and allow for new possibilities and new paths.

Seventh Key: Be Adaptable and Allow Yourself to Change

The experiences you desire move around a lot.  Old desires become launching pads for new desires, and Nature waffles; as a part of Nature it’s what we do.  Allow yourself to change your mind.  As we take in new observations and new contrasting data, our desires change.  Everything eventually changes in Nature; stones more slowly than viruses, but it is natural to change and to want to change.

We want new experiences and greater complexity.  Don’t be confused if your life has been more of the experiences you don’t want, or has been overly complex.  This may make you pine for the old good experiences and simpler times.  Certainly anything would be better than a life of mostly pain.  But when life is working well for you, when you are creating more of the experiences that you do want then you will continually seek greater complexity new experiences, just as Nature does.

Let’s go back to the guitar analogy.  As you begin to master the guitar and together you are producing good music, you will find the natural desire to try new songs, new ways of putting notes and chords together in more complex ways.  We measure the level of virtuosity of any great artist, by the level of complexity they have attained without losing the quality of their art.  So allow yourself to continue to pray for more and new experiences.  Allow yourself to change your prayer even before it is answered.

Final Note: Help is Available and There is Nothing Serious About It

And finally, there is no score keeper or judge, no authority above you to determine whether or not you are doing all of this right, or living life correctly or not.  It is your gig, your sandbox to play in as you wish.  It’s just as valid to go through life letting the winds of influence blow you to and fro and just see what happens.

And if you do try to be more intentional and it just seems to difficult, this is also where the gentle, yet powerful work of the shaman can help to release the deeper influences that may be flowing against your practice and progress.  There are infinite possibilities in the eternity of this play of consciousness, and you can find them all in the center of your heart where laughter originates.  Laugh without moving your lips, and you will feel it.

Jon Rasmussen

The Ayahuasca Experience

Jon RasmussenContributor

For over ten years now, I have worked with two Ayahuasceros, or Ayahuasca Shamans, in the Amazon jungle of Peru.  Their names are Don Ignacio, and Don Panduro. I was introduced to them through Dr. Alberto Villoldo who has worked with and vetted them for over two decades. Each year I participated in the ceremony on average for three or four nights; and each of those forty plus ceremonies was unique, from mild euphoria to horrendous madness that had me begging for death, to the most profound views into my subconscious and the collective superconscious and subsequently valuable clarity and insights.

I do not consider the Ayahuasca ceremony to be a necessary part of the healing journey; there are far more gentler ways to get it done effectively – like my session work as one example.  However, it is one of the biggest hammers in the toolbox; and, since it is like strapping yourself to a rocket ship, it does offer a great opportunity to develop mastery in a relatively short period of time.  I will cover what I mean by this in further detail below.

For the last several years, I have lead groups and individuals into the jungle to work with Don Panduro, and each time they have found it valuable to go in with all that I could share ahead of time. In this article I wish to share with you my experience and understanding of this powerful medicine in the most simple and concise way possible, and from the perspective of engaging with it as a shaman or person of power.

The Ayahuasca Recipe

Ayahuasca, of which the actual drink is known by various names including Yage (ya-hay), Natem, Cipo, or Shori, consists first of the bark of a jungle vine known as Ayahuasca in the Quechua language of Peru, which literally translated means vine [of] death.  This vine contains the MAO inhibitor that allows the medicine to pass through the intestine and the blood-brain barrier without being metabolized or oxidized.

The second component is the leaves of a plant called Chacruna, which translated means plant [of] people.  This plant provides the psychotropic chemical DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine).

Many other plant components can be added to obtain various results during the ceremony, for example, Amazonian black tobacco (Mapacho) for cleansing and purging.  Other plant components can be added for protection, healing and curing of specific ailments and afflictions both physical and psychological including addictions and PTSD, and for various visionary or grounding effects.

The ingredients are boiled in water for as much as 12 hours to obtain a concentrated drink.

And most importantly, the Ayahuascero who prepares the drink, has gathered the plant materials his or herself directly from the nearby jungle where they have a very deep and personal relationship and dialogue with the souls of the plants.

The Ayahuasca Shaman

The Ayahuasca Shaman is required to go through a very intense initiation and training that has to do with creating a relationship with, and getting all of the information necessary directly from the plants.  For example, in the case of Don Panduro, starting at age 13, he spent three years alone in the jungle.  The first year was a regimen of walking in seven directions over time through the jungle, on a special diet, and ingesting some of the plants and having songs come to him that he would later use to call on specific spirits to aid in the ceremony and healing of his clients.  These songs are called icaros.

Fundamentally, by the time an Ayahuascero is ready to use his or her medicine to help people, they are ideally masters at calling in all of the non-physical/spirit helpers from the jungle and elsewhere, and are able to keep away spirits that would try to interfere with, use, or cause harm to the participants.  This is referred to as holding sacred space, and is a critical skill of the Ayahuascero because great damage can be done to the soul, psyche, and body of the participant if the space is breached by a malevolent force.  In fact, there are also some Ayahuasceros who will practice sorcery and may have malevolent intent themselves, and thus it is critical to work with a master/Maestro who has been well vetted and is trustworthy.

Preparation for the Ayahuasca Ceremony

As a participant, there are several considerations when preparing to engage in an Ayahuasca ceremony.  The ceremony is usually held at night starting between 7pm and 8pm and will last typically for 4 hours. Sometimes there is residual effects into the night, but usually by the next morning, you will feel exceptionally good, i.e. no hangover as this is truly medicine and not a drug.

For strength, but to have and empty stomach and little food in the intestines, I like to eat a good breakfast, and a very light lunch, with no dinner.  It is best to avoid alcohol and any drug that would interact adversely with the MAO inhibitor and DMT.  Marijuana as common as it is these days, is not compatible with the intent of the Ayahuasca and will block vision and generally cause a heavy and dark sense around you during the ceremony. It can also induce much unpleasant purging, as can any other impurities or heavy energies in your system.  And since Marijuana stays in the system for up to a month, its best to avoid if possible. Pure tobacco is compatible, and can be smoked even during the ceremony as it is widely regarded as a powerful cleansing plant.

As with all shamanic ceremony, it is helpful to develop an intent or set of intentions before going in.  And I would say that since you are potentially strapping yourself to a rocket ship, nowhere is it more important than with Ayahuasca.  Don Panduro does a great job of helping with this at the beginning of the session, but not all ayahuasceros will.  You will want to ask yourself which parts of your life experience you would like to change or improve, for example, health, relationships, work, and/or resources.  Panduro analogously uses health, love, projects, and/or luck.  The plants, non-physical helpers, and the Ayahuascero will work with you during the ceremony to clear old patterns and blocks that are influencing you from creating your ideal experiences on the energetic soul level, your subconscious mythic level, psychological level, and physical level including your DNA; just like a the sessions I do, but at a thousand miles an hour, with all channels open in your brain, creating many distractions, and potentially puking your guts out – or the other direction.

Warning: As with all shamanic healing, the physicality, chemistry, and psychology is only a small part of the deal, so if you go into the ceremony for recreational purposes or to just have beautiful visions, you may end up with very little benefit or it may even set you back years on your healing journey.  When engaging with any shaman, the reality is that your are asking to become a person of power and freedom, not just to feel good during or immediately after a session.  You may see pretty colors and answers to the Universe, but you may also see the hundred different ways you could die a slow and painful death, or get stuck in a maddening and relentless loop of thought patterns and images.  In either case, it is part of developing your mastery to go and see what would be of most benefit to you and others in your life.

The Ayahuasca Ceremony

During the Ayahuasca ceremony, or any other shamanic ceremony for that matter, it is important to remember that you are the master of your own domain and life. You alone are the creator of your own experiences. There is nobody, no authority, above you, including the shaman, the non-physical helpers (some call spirit guides, Panduro calls doctors), and the plant medicine.  Never surrender your power to anyone or anything like this.  You are essentially hiring them to help you achieve what you decide you want to achieve.  If you surrender and leave yourself open, you may be held in a benevolent way and still get something out of the work, but you may also end up somewhere that you realize you don’t want to be.

This is what I mean by going into the ceremony as a shaman, master, or person of power.  I open my own sacred space around me, in addition to the sacred space that the Ayahuascero keeps, just in case.  One of the things that I know and appreciate about Don Panduro is his fierce ability to hold space and ward off beings that inevitably get interested in taking advantage of the participants in the state that Ayahuasca creates.  This is one of the main reasons that I hesitate to work with anyone else who has not been as carefully vetted and proven over time.  And also the reason why I prefer to work with the Ayahuasca in the jungle close to where the plants live, and where there is the greatest level of support, nurturing, and absorption ability of all the plants and earth there. The jungle even without the ceremony, is an ideal place to shed heavy energies the way the anaconda sheds it’s skin, and to receive the fundamental healing properties of “Nature’s pharmacy” on every level of your being.

As the ceremony begins, the ayahuascero will hand you a small cup of the drink.  It can taste very bitter and unpleasant.  The mix can vary quite a bit in potency and characteristics.  It typically takes about 20 to 40 minutes to begin to take effect.  You may begin to enter an altered state of consciousness, and or you may feel ready to throw up around that time.  If you do throw up, it’s a good thing, and very different than throwing up from being sick at home. In this case, it is like you are more observing yourself, and you may also be altered enough to see the heavy energies going with it.  You may also experience the cleansing going the other direction instead, which can induce impressive bowel movements right then, or the next day.  This is less common, but you can also ask the medicine to do what you feel you need most.  The last several times, I have not thrown-up but instead chose the high-colonic.   The medicine will rid your intestines of parasites and other maladies.

Here is where it gets interesting.  All the channels available to your brain will be on at the same time.  It is like having a room full of television sets with about a thousand channels, each one seeming to vie for your attention.  The key here is to stay focused on that which serves your original intent.  You may be pulled away momentarily, but you can use a swift exhale of your breath to “change the channel” back to where you want to focus.  Remember that you are the master.  But at this point your mind is not very helpful as it is the culprit so to speak, so using your breath, and/or the songs and sounds from the ayahuascero is key.  Also, simply asking mentally for help will engage all of the beings present to come to your aid.

You may be “seeing” beautiful and elaborate visions or colors in your minds eye.  Your physical eyes are best to keep closed to help keep your focus.  You may also have visions from your past or future, but again, unless they are aligned with your intent, they are mostly a distraction.  You may also be distracted by other participants, or your desire to engage with or help them, but this is not the place or time, and you will only be interfering with their journey.

You may also experience the ceremony as if nothing at all is happening.  This is still the opportunity to work on your mastery. I discovered in my last journey, that if you are a leader, then the medicine will wait for you to take the lead.  For example, I used it to travel through time and space and check on some things.  In this case, as soon as you take the first step, the medicine will kick in an help you with the next one-hundred steps so to speak.

Ayahuasca and Mastery

This four or so hours within the Ayahuasca ceremony is a tremendous opportunity to exercise the muscle of becoming a master at creating your own experience.  It’s like in boot camp, when a soldier wears a 60lb pack as they run up a hill, so that later without it, they can really jam.   With the challenge of having every channel open in your brain and soul, and all possible distractions, to be able to focus your thoughts and energetic signal and let go of that which does not serve your intent will make doing this in ordinary reality that much easier.

The opportunity for mastery begins even with the physical purging.  For some people, that feeling of nausea can last for the entire four hours, and I have seen them spend the whole time in dry heaves.  What I coach in this regard is to purge the first time completely and with abandon until there is nothing coming out, and then use your breath and decide at that moment that you are finished with that.  Go back and focus on working with your original intent with your team.  Ask mentally and allow the ayahuascero to help with any further need to shed heavy energies in lieu of the nausea and dry heaves.

The master ayahuascero and their icaro songs, rattling, and/or whistling is a critical part of the ceremony. Panduro will also use his tobacco to perform sucking extractions and other clearing.   I have felt his tobacco smoke go through my body and cleanse.  I have also experienced his whistling going through my body working on various areas and rearranging energies. In one instance I was sure that he was standing right behind me working the sound of his whistle through my body and mind, and then opened my eyes for a brief moment to see him standing 50 feet in front of me.

Without writing a whole book about this amazing form of healing, I hope that this article helps you to understand enough to make decisions on whether or not and how to participate in a way that serves you best;  and if so, to do it most efficiently and effectively without taking so many times to “figure it out” on your own.  It is really a personal relationship between you and the plant, and you may not resonate with this particular medicine.  For example, I do not resonate as well with Peyote or San Pedro (the mescaline based cacti), while others do very well.  And in fact, for some time I have no longer felt compelled even to work the the Ayahuasca, and only do so now to participate occasionally with the groups I bring to Peru.

The most important point I would like to leave you with is that Ayahuasca is a very powerful and intense medicine.  It is much more than just physical chemical, but instead a very conscious healing force that will bring you what you are asking for, whether you are fully conscious of what you are asking for or not, and whose work on you can continue for more than a year after the ceremony.

In every ceremony that I have participated or heard about, each individual present had completely different experiences on the full range I have described and in the same night.  Therefore, comparing or expecting to have an experience similar to another is futile at best. As in life, it is your journey to be taken in your way and at your pace, and your choice to employ whatever may help you along the way, and to avoid whatever may impede you.  There is so much for you to choose from, and I hope you have a clearer understanding of at least the way of the Ayahuasca ceremony and of what I consider to be the gentler, but still as powerful work that I offer in my shaman sessions, during which I often call upon Don Panduro and the Ayahuasca in spirit as part of my team.

With Great Love and Respect,

How to Create Your Own Shamanic Rituals

Jon RasmussenContributor

With the Shamanic tools of simple and playful ceremony, you are more powerful than you can imagine.  And reclaiming those tools is a huge part of this planetary shift in humanity known as the Return of the Feminine. What makes ceremony and ritual so powerful is that it accesses the subconscious part of our being that we call the Mythic, which influences our conscious mind and signal of asking and receiving our experiences in the world, as well as the actions we take to achieve our goals.

Reclaim the Power to Influence Your World

Now you can use these techniques in a very personal way, to fulfill your agenda of creating the experiences you would prefer in the world.  It really is just a more powerful form of prayer, or positive thinking that supports those processes in a complementary way.  Thus, the practice of these techniques is not counter or threatening to any belief system, psychological, or spiritual practice, or actions in the physical world towards your goals.

Using Ancient Ritual in Modern Times

Some more familiar modern forms of ritual include vision boards, altars, and various ceremonies from marriage to ribbon cutting, and so on.  What is now returning as we claim our power and freedom and the feminine aspects of our being, is the idea that you can create your own way of engaging with the Mythic and for very specific experiences.

Before I give you some examples, it is important to note that as with any thought and action, it is up to you to decide to engage from a place of love and empowerment, as opposed to fear and control.  The latter use of these techniques is known as sorcery, and never accomplishes what you really desire.

Also, since I often must address this concern with my clients, none of these shamanic ceremonies have anything to do with worshiping, nor idolatry.  Shamanism is just the nuts and bolts and tools that can help turbo charge whatever else you do, including just thinking of and doing stuff without the thought or belief in the non-physical at all, including atheism.

Focus on the Broad Experience You Want

So the first step before engaging with these powerful tools and techniques, is  to be very clear about the overall experience you desire. For example,” I want Joe Smith to love me forever,” versus,” I want to be loved and supported unconditionally by a man who I thoroughly enjoy being around, playing with, dreaming with, and looking at.” The Universe might bring you someone 10 times better than Joe Smith in your experience, and you’ll fondly forget about old Joe pretty quickly.  Unless, of course it just turns out synchronisticly that Joe Smith and his desired experiences are the perfect match for you.

This is true for all the forms and mechanisms the Universe brings you to fulfill your desired experiences, from health, to work, to resources, and all of your relationships including the world at large.  Check if you are dictating the specific steps and forms that you think are necessary to get the experience you want, and back away to the broader experiences as much as you can.

Now you are ready to proceed with the activity itself, of which I will offer just a few examples in an endless sea of possibilities.  There is usually a good order to follow, just as we do in our healing and destiny retrieval processes. The order is typically to release old blocks, patterns, and experiences that might be influencing you away from your goals.  Then we sometimes have to make sure that our ancestor’s or old authority figure’s experiences and beliefs aren’t getting in the way.  Then the more subtle work of making sure our own judgments and attachments don’t interfere.  And the final step is anchoring the ideal goal itself.  You may not need all the steps.

Create a Sand Painting or Mandala

An example for releasing the old is what we call the Sand Painting or Mandala.  For this particular purpose, I also call it the Mythic Toilet.  You simply create a circle of objects like stones.  Then in the circle put more objects each representing the life experiences you want to let go of.  You can use anything in the center, but since it is a toilet, I just use leaves, twigs, stones, cigarette butts, beer cans, whatever fodder is lying about.

You can even draw it.  After working with it, adding things that come up for a few days, moving things around, you can dismantle and burn or bury one piece or portion of the inside.  Another approach is to just grab an object and blow the intensity of the unwanted experience into it and burn or bury that. This allows the Earth to mulch the old story for you.

Create an Ancestor Altar

An example of the ancestor release is the ancestor altar. Unless you are from a culture that does a meaningful rite of passage into adulthood ceremony at age 13 or so, chances are that your ancestors are still following you around, energetically attached to you, and influencing you.  Even though this ceremony releases their grip on you, you still get to keep all the good stuff they did for you, and gave or continue to give you, and typically improve your relationships with living family.

The simple technique is to place on a surface a representative object or picture of your DNA and/or adoptive ancestors, or other Authority i.e. foster family, cult, or religious order like a nunnery.  Then everyday for a couple of weeks bring a gift of food, drink, sweets, flowers, and so on, and drop it off at the altar. This makes a clean, loving, forgiving, respectful, and grateful break from their potentially disruptive influences on you.  At it helps them to heal as well.

Do Shadow Work and Let Go of the Outcome

To help you let go of judgments and attachments that can paradoxically keep you from receiving the experiences that are now being delivered, there are a few subtle techniques.  While this is covered in many spiritual practices, simply letting go of the need or even desire for the outcome can be aided by the same mandala and/or blowing and burning process as in the first step, but adding all that you think is important and identify or dis-identify with as a twist.

Shadow work is helpful, where you simply acknowledge and embrace even that which you judge as bad within yourself.  Eagle is a great symbol to help with this, as it helps you to attain the broadest perspective, and simply having a picture of an eagle around helps. It is no wonder that was chosen as the Mythic symbol for the United States.

Create a Destiny Altar

An example of the final step in achieving your ideal life experiences or goals, also known as dreaming your world into being, is what we call the Destiny Altar. Much like the vision board, you can bring together symbols that represent and elicit the ultimate feeling place or experience you desire.  In many cases, even placing your own image there to put you in the scene is helpful (even if it feels somewhat uncomfortable to do that).

This can also be done in the form of a mandala, but will be more permanent, and something you can add to and tend to from time to time.  You can feed or bring gifts to this altar as well.  Remember that this is not the kind of altar where you worship; instead it is just there to anchor your goals in the Mythic layer of your being and to strengthen your signal.

Play!!!

I don’t think anyone can say definitively how or why going through these ritual motions works better than only visualizing or the several forms of prayer, manifesting, psychological techniques.  I have my own theories and observations about it related to engaging the whole being, and helping to focus your intent.  And, I also see that it is best to do both, and to get out there and do stuff as well!

The Universe does seem to require that you take one step forward in order for it to take a hundred steps toward you.  So, in addition to all that you already do, play with the above techniques and see what kind of results you get.  And when I say play, I really mean play, because the lighter, easier, and more childlike your approach this, the better it seems to work.
