Ever since the term sexting was made up, it’s had a pretty bad reputation. Every time we see it mentioned in the media, it’s usually linked to some kind of celebrity or political scandal, or worse, we hear about it associated with teens.

But in reality, sexting really isn’t bad. Everyone’s doing it. According to a study that was done at Drexel University, 87.8% of the 870 adults aged 18-82 that took part of the study said they have sexted and 82.2% of them had sexted in the past year.

Overall, the researchers found that greater levels of sexting are associated with greater sexual satisfaction. Sexting was found to have very positive effects among people who were single or casually dating. While sexting didn’t seem to have much effect on couples in committed relationships, it can be assumed that these couples already have very open communication about sex, which, of course, leads to better sex. It’s something that the researchers say needs further study.

But here’s what we know about the benefits of sexting from what we hear from AROUSR members and chat hosts…

– Sexting is a great way to have one-on-one sexual contact with someone when you can’t be with someone physically.

– Sexting is a fun form of adult flirting.

– Sexting is the safest form of sex.

– Sexting is a sex-positive way to explore kinks, fetishes and fantasies before or if you never have an opportunity to try them out in your sex play with your partner.

– Sexting is a great way to talk about sex in a non-judgmental way with other people. When you’re able to talk about sex with someone else, even if it’s not your partner or a friend, the more you learn what you like and want really isn’t all that embarrassing or shameful. You’ll probably find out that what you’re into is pretty common.

– Sexting helps make it easier to talk about sex with your partner. Ultimately, the easier it is to talk about sex with your partner, you’ll likely have better sex and have sex more often.

So what about all that gossip we hear about sexting being the reason for breakups and betrayal on social media and in the tabloids? Sexting among cheaters is only about 12%. It’s probably no different than any of the other ways people get caught being unfaithful to their spouses or partners.
