Are You Stuck On The Personal Development Treadmill?

Written by on September 26, 2017 in Conscious Evolution, Manifestation / LOA with 0 Comments

You buy all the latest personal development books, you watch the videos, and you go to the latest guru's seminars. Just like running on a treadmill, you're working really hard and getting nowhere, or at least not as far or as fast as you'd like!

“I have read dozens of books, attended countless seminars, took a six week class four times thinking that repetition was the key. None of these things made any lasting changes in my life.”

Are you having the same problem? If you are, you're not alone!

According to Marketdata Enterprises, the self-help industry was valued at $11 billion in 2010 and was predicted to grow by 5.5% each year* from 2010-2014. It is one of the few markets that is still growing despite the downturn in the economy.

Many people are experiencing ‘awakening' and are looking for answers to “life, the universe and everything”, as Douglas Adams put it in ‘Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. If only the answer was as simple as the one that was presented in his book!

They are looking for help to reconnect with their spiritual self and to find the meaning and purpose in life.

Interestingly, the economic and political crises of recent years, plus the stress levels produced by the need to earn more money to support the increasing drive to consume have been powerful catalysts for change for many people who are now actively seeking a more fulfilling and spiritual approach to life.

But why is it so difficult to create lasting change?

The statistics for the growing self-help market indicate that the majority of people don't find the answer in the books they read, the movies they watch and the seminars they attend, or they don't apply what they learn to achieve lasting change.

Sadly, many providers of self-help products have a vested interest in perpetuating this problem to maintain and increase their market.

One purveyor of high-end life-coaching services (who, for obvious reasons, wished to remain anonymous) has been reported as saying, “In our line of business, we have a saying: ‘Don’t fix the client.’” In other words, if you fix the client you lose the potential for further sales.

There is a flaw in this argument though, as I've found from clients who have come to me from ‘famous name' coaching programs. Sooner or later people get fed up when they realize they aren't getting the results they want and that their coach has no real interest in them other than as a source of revenue.

I’ve also worked with clients who have attended the same group program time after time only to find themselves back where they started a few weeks later.

There are two main reasons why the success rate is so low.

Firstly, many of these personal development programs only tackle the symptoms of the problem, not the cause.

Secondly, it takes commitment and work  – you must have self-discipline and commitment to change, because you not only have to learn new ways of thinking and behaving but you also have to undo the old persistent behaviors and beliefs that are deeply embedded in your subconscious and responsible for repeated relapses into your old ways.

How to get off the personal development treadmill

inner workChanging any aspect of your life means working from the inside out. You have to look inside in order to understand how you got to where you are now, and what needs to change in order to get where you want to be.

As within, so without.

Your consciousness determines your physical reality.

This is not only a spiritual principle but has also been proved in quantum physics research**.

I spent years consuming the latest personal development product and events, but when the motivational ‘high' wore off, I soon slipped back into my old habits and went looking for the next ‘silver bullet' that would change my life.

I only started to achieve real, lasting change when I tackled the core issues that were keeping me stuck in the same old patterns. As I developed new perspectives about myself and learnt that I’m responsible for creating everything in my world I was able to create major breakthroughs in my work, my business, my relationships – everything!

I now use the same methods to help others achieve exceptional results.

So, if you want to create lasting change in your life, here’s where to start:

  1. Look back over your life for patterns of self-sabotaging behavior
  2. Examine your fears – they may include fear of failure, fear of what people think of you, fear of being not good enough
  3. If history repeats itself it means you’re making the same mistake and need to learn the lesson before you can create something different. What is that lesson?
  4. Listen to your thoughts – what are they saying about you? Are they affirming or critical?
  5. How do you feel? Are you optimistic, positive and happy or pessimistic, negative and unhappy?
  6. Are your relationships happy and supportive or dysfunctional?
  7. Do you truly believe in the possibility of creating what you want?

Once you get clear on what’s going on inside you can start to tackle the issues one by one to free yourself to create the outcomes you want. Ignore them and you’ll find yourself stuck on the same old treadmill, working flat out and getting nowhere.
