How to Improve Your Motivation

Motivation is the fuel for accomplishment and understanding what creates this feeling inside of us is one of the most important things we can do in order to get us moving toward our dreams. There are two basic types of motivation. First is intrinsic motivation in which we accomplish goals and do the work to gain something that has meaning on the inside for us.  The second type of motivation is extrinsic motivation to do something to gain a reward or avoid punishment. this force comes from the outside.  Many can debate which type of motivation is better but the real issue here is how to create a long lasting motivation to help you achieve your goals and become the best version of yourself possible.  Here are a few things which will help you improve your motivation to get started on a goal and to maintain the momentum to the completion of the goal you have set for yourself.

Focus On The Positive

The focus we maintain in pursuit of our goals will go a long way in determining the power and substance of our motivation. In the beginning of any journey, motivation comes easy, but as you move through the days, weeks and months, that is where you need to be able to keep your focus.  How you talk to yourself has a lot to do with your ultimate success.  Every person has a dialogue running in their mind all the time and left unchecked it often speaks to us in a derogatory and negative manner.  Let’s face it, nobody knows our weaknesses more than us.

This voice can be taught to be more positive and supportive simply by paying attention to the things we allow our mind to think.  I know in my mind, I used to call myself all kinds of negative names, when I started working out.  Looking at my reflection and calling myself “fatty”, “loser”, or “lazy”, none of which worked to motivate me in the long run.  What did was to recognize how you talk to yourself is the most important conversation you will have.  Be positive and understanding with yourself. Be kind, encouraging and sympathetic as you would with a small child. If you don’t support yourself, who will?  It will go a long way to increasing your motivation to accomplish whatever you set out to do.

Recognize the Opportunity in the Obstacle

When you are trying to create something or reach a goal, there are going to be inevitable obstacles in your path.  Life provides these things, not to stop our progress but to give us the solutions to get around these

obstacles.  So in your mind, when something doesn’t go your way as you pursue a goal, you have a simple choice to make.  Quit and give up or find another way to get where you want to go. There is a great opportunity for growth and learning in every challenge we face.  Successful people find the motivation existing there.

Pick up your motivation when you run into a road block on your journey. Rather than turn around and give up. Ask yourself, what new path can take you where you want to go? What can you do to get over, around or through the obstacle.  These questions can provide the motivation to find the answers and propel you toward your goals and dreams. Recognize the opportunity in all things, because that is what successful people do. It will renew and revitalize your motivation to accomplish your goal.

Develop Gratitude Attitude

Finding motivation over the long term can be difficult for sure, but how to gain motivation back is as simple.  Learn to look at the world with an attitude of gratitude.  There is a power in this practice that provides a will to keep going and opens you up to accept more good things into your life. This is true in every day existence and finding motivation to achieve goals and dreams.

Each day, look at your life and list the things you are grateful for. Write them down someplace you can revisit them later.  The first thing this does for you is changes your mindset toward the positive.  It will remind you that even if you haven’t quite accomplished everything yet, there are still a lot of good things in your life.  It will also remind you that you are ready and open for more good things as well.  Developing an attitude of gratitude will allow you to stay motivated through challenges because you know good things have come and will come again.  A very valuable skill that is simple to practice and ultimately rewarding.

Remember Your Victories

The human experience can be a difficult journey and we lose our natural motivation to keep moving towards our goals of career, success, weight loss or any other area we set goals and seek improvement. But we have all had success at some point in our lives and the talents we used and the attributes we developed on the path to these successes are important to remember.  Success in one situation can provide proof of our skills and abilities in another. If we remember them.

Make a list of the things you have accomplished and the things you had to do in order to meet that challenge.  Some won’t do this because they feel it is arrogant to list your positive skills and celebrate them. It is never negative to build yourself up in order to have a healthy self esteem this is a vital skill.  Make that list, be proud of yourself and carry it with you.  When you feel your motivation wane, remind yourself how great and talented you are.  Because you are!  This will allow you to keep going and eat that healthy meal, do that workout, apply to that new job, move to that new location or meet that new challenge.  Your own greatness can be your motivation.

Increasing Motivation

Each person lives their own story. Sometimes the setting and situations are out of our control, but the actions and reactions that we take are totally in our control and we are the authors of our own success or failure.  Your motivation to remain positive and resolute despite the effects of time, challenges or setbacks will determine your ultimate success.  Remember that every great story has a challenge involved and that is what makes it a great story. You are the hero in your story and you can accomplish all you set your goals for.
