Simple Recipes for Homemade Natural Seasoning Mixes

Now that I have emerged from my food-induced Thanksgiving coma, I can start thinking about a menu that doesn’t include turkey. No turkey for a long, long time.

Seasonings Greetings

Thank goodness for reader Janine J., who recently wrote us to share her friend’shomemade seasoning mix recipes. Glancing over these seasoning recipes gave me hope for future meals containing juicy, savory, chicken. Or beef. Or fish. Just not turkey.


I know I’ll invite turkey back into my life at some point. Soon I’ll be able to forgive and forget all the uncomfortably stuffed moments I experienced that were a direct result of a delicious turkey. But until then…

A few homemade spice mixes

Homemade Seasoning Mix 2

Homemade Johnny’s Seasoning

Enjoy this seasoning on anything from popcorn to chicken and roasts.

Ingredients:


  • 1 ½ Tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 Tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Method: Combine all spices in a bowl and mix well to combine. Transfer to a glass spice bottle or other shaker-top container and label.

Taco Seasoning

For each pound of ground beef/turkey, use 2 tablespoons of this seasoning, plus ¾ cup water.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 Tablespoon cumin
  • 2 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon oregano

Method: Combine spices, mix well, and transfer to a repurposed spice container. Label with instructions for use, and plan your next taco night!
