(ANTIMEDIA) Ann Arbor, Michigan — A postal worker in Michigan was arrested for discarding over a thousand pieces of mail into a dumpster.

Antwan Roberts was accused of throwing away mail in an official filing in Federal Court on Dec. 2, after the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General received a tip in November that a large amount of undelivered mail had been found in a dumpster.

In total, federal agents recovered 1,271 pieces of mail and packages. Numerous packages were found to be opened. All of the addresses of the recovered mail were linked to the routes Roberts was responsible for delivering.

When confronted by authorities, Roberts, who was hired in September and has since resigned, admitted to throwing away the mail. He claimed to have thrown away at least six times the amount of mail that was recovered, according to When asked why he chose to do this, Roberts said it was due to being overwhelmed with the amount of mail, as he was “undertrained.” Roberts also admitted to opening numerous pieces of mail, but he did not admit to stealing any of the contents.

One resident, Cindy Schapani, said she has been waiting for a check: “There’s a piece of mail I’ve been watching for every day since about mid-November which is a check for consulting work that I hope is not in the stash.”

Tampering with the mail is a Federal Offense under 18 U.S. Code § 1703, with a penalty of five years in prison.
