To Open One of Your Masculine Chakras (1st, 3rd or 5th), You Need to Do THIS

With this week’s video, I hope to break an old chakra myth around the idea of “opening.” There’s this prevailing idea that in order to open a chakra, you need to physically relax and expand, but that is only true for half of your chakras — the feminine ones — sacral, heart and 3rd eye.

For the other embodied chakras, root, solar plexus and throat that are masculine in nature, you actually open them energetically by contracting physically. In other words, they require you to engage a work a bit.


Your masculine chakras are the odd ones (1st, 3rd and 5th) that relate to your external world and concepts like goal-setting, success, making money, having a career, and living your true purpose.

Your feminine chakras are the even ones (2nd, 4th and 6th) that relate to your inner world and your connection to others. They bring fulfillment to your life in the form of creativity, love, intuition, joy and meaningful relationships.

If you practice yoga, you shouldn’t be surprised by this idea of needing to contract to open your masculine chakras, because you’re probably already familiar with the three bandhas — or energy locks in the body. And these locks exist only in the three masculine chakras.

The bandhas are energy locks in the body created through contracting muscles. The mula bandha, the root lock, activates the root chakra by pulling the perineum up and in (like a Kegel).

The uddiyana bandha, the core lock, activates the solar plexus chakra in the same way that doing sit ups does. It contracts the abdominal muscles.


Lastly, the jalandhara bandha, the chin lock, activates the throat chakra by tucking the chin in in a way that squeezes the throat and thyroid.

The reason I’m sharing this is so that you’ll stop thinking of all the chakras in the same way. On a physical plane, the masculine chakras need contraction, while the feminine chakras need the opposite, relaxed expansion.

So it shouldn’t surprise you that pulsing between contraction and expansion is very good for all your chakras, and that is why some yoga poses, like cat-cow, pulsate between opening and closing.

If you think about it, even your natural breath is this kind of expansion and contraction. When we inhale, we physically expand, and when we exhale, we physically contract or at least, release and deflate.

So, what this all boils down to is this: if you want to open a chakra with physical motion, you need to know that working the masculine chakras might not feel like “opening,” because they require some effort and contraction to “open.”

Sometimes, I see very spiritual people who can’t seem to get things done in their day-to-day life, because they are avoiding doing the contraction that is needed to open their masculine chakras. On the spiritual path, we all need to keep in mind that contraction, work, effort and strength are a part of who we are,  just as expansion, play and relaxation are.

If you give equal attention to both your inner and outer worlds and engage in dual motions like contracting and expanding, working and playing, strengthening and relaxing, you’ll naturally move toward having all your chakras open and balanced. And when you are totally balanced in your chakras, you naturally live in the energy of your midpoint and your essence — in your heart. And that is a beautiful place to be.
